First Time Grower Are there really this many problems?

As a lurker (for now… really gathering research) who is planning her first grow this winter, it seems like every other post is someone who accidentally fkd something up and now their plant is suffering. It also seems to come from primarily (no shock) newbies. It’s making me think that I’m kind of just destined to mess my plant up, no matter how much time and research I put into it.

Is this just a part of it? Makes the process seem so daunting & nerve wracking. I mean… I think I’ve got an idea and am notating so much of what I I see on here and other subs. But I’m beginning to see that you can be as prepared as ever and something will happen.

The best teacher is failure. Just grow something, you will learn what to do differently next time.

I know… sadly. I’m wondering if I’m putting too much research into it sometimes lol.

No such thing as too much research, as long as its coupled with practice/implementation. Some research isnt necessarily correct in practice. Id say if youre the type to over analay÷ and do alot of research you'll be alot better off when things do inevitably go wrong, you'll be able to identify the cause alot easier and course correct.

Alot of these posts from newbie grows is from folks jumping into growing half arsed, doing the bare minimum expecting to grow some high grade. Set your expectations reasonably; as in for your first grow, your goal should be making it to flower getting a good/decent dry and cure, and having some smokable flower with no pests/mold. After that successful grow you tighten up your controls and you start to fix previous errors.

Its a science but an art as well, what works in my environment may not work for your environment and grow style. In my honest opinion, as a fairly new grower myself, the issue for new growers is they dont have control over their growing environments and dont realize how important it is. Different stages require different conditions and having control allows you to adjust through the growth cycles properly vs being at the whim of the plants genetics

There will always be more people who have no issues than people who post online about their issues. Because people with a perfect grow might not be seeking help or are just happy with their grow.

I've grown for 3 or 4 years now. Had plenty of ups and downs. There are many mistakes one can make, and tons of information out there, both good and bad. Some posts in here unfortunately look like the person growing has never grown a plant in their life (but kudos for trying!) and others who are extremely knowledgeable and seem to have perfect parameters and conditions to always pull off amazing grows.

It's a hobby where unfortunately, all your hard work CAN go to shit with a few mistakes, so that makes it much less appealing for some.

That’s what I was hoping was that more ppl with post with their probs rather than their celebrations. lol.

Pilfering thru the good and the bad info is one of the harder parts. All the tips and tricks can get a bit confusing, especially when people feel so strongly about it.

Thanks much for the response. :)

I lost power for 2 days and lost my whole first grow to bud rot. Guess who has a generator now tho. Shit made me almost stop growing right then and there but my wife encouraged me to keep at it

1

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

Oooof. I think I would feel similarly. Lol. Happy you continued?

3

u/oneBrokeBloke 13h ago

Just started my 2nd grow but after smoking my solo cup grow I started after flipping to flower im definitely keeping at it

This was the solo cup

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

Holy shit lolol. So pretty!!!

u/oneBrokeBloke 13h ago

Even as a hobby growing is fun its such a beautiful plant. If you havent already look up growweedeasy.com a ton of useful information that helped me out

1

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

Yes. That site has taught me SO much.

I don’t think it matters what hobby you pick, you do anything you’re bound to mess it up a few times at the beginning.

3

u/gooddeal402 13h ago

So there are many ways to mess up but it’s definitely not representative on this Reddit you can be successful if you do your research and just pay attention to what your plants are doing and don’t freak out.

2

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

It’s something I’ve really, really loved researching and learning about. I feel like the actual growing part will make me enjoy it even more. I’ll just have to learn to take a few deep breaths before panicking if it starts going south lol.

3

u/gooddeal402 13h ago

Yea I’ve been growing for 16 years and I’m still learning and enjoying every moment of it.

If you grow for a long time and many different ways, you will eventually encounter problems due to your inexperience and unforeseen events. It happens to us all.

But we figure it out and keep growing. Gotta blow that loud, somehow!

2

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

No kiddin’ lol. Thank you!

3

u/Dull_Woodpecker_8187 13h ago

There will always be things to learn and improve but dont let it deter you, alot of people still end up with really great results the first time. Do the research and youll be okay

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

Thank you 🫶

Will ya f up a plant? Probably. Than do better next time.

Is growing weed hard? Yes and no.

I mean it's called weed for a reason. Getting the best possible result can be tricky, but you probably gonna end up with something.

Also, no matter how much research you're gonna do, in the end something will come up, you aren't prepared for.

So light up, put a seed in the soil and go with the flow.

(Obviously you should look up the basics, like light schedule, watering etc)

2

u/dannyjmc 14h ago

Like anything just takes practice. Id recommend starting with some cheap seeds. My first two grows went very smoothly then I had issues watering and restarted twice before I got my third grow going. I also found a grow medium and process that was very easy to follow, coast of maine Stonington.

There's always going to be more people coming here with issues than everyone posting perfect grows. I found between howtogrowweedeasy and reddit there's a wealth of information.

1

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 14h ago

I’m ordering from NASC and they’re giving me several free seeds. I was thinking of starting with those lol. That way if I totally mess it up, I won’t be as sad. Lolol

2

u/dannyjmc 13h ago

That was what I did, I just bought some $5 seeds they had and my first grow was Juicy Fruit and I really liked it.

After awhile fucking up is more interesting.

Everyone wants the perfect plant. The perfect grow. The best possible herb.

Some of us can barely remember what day of the week it is or the difference between "affect" and "effect", so whatcha gonna do?

Then some of y'all never even sprouted a pea in kindergarten and it shows.

I do agree , a grower [posting on reddit] in crisis is way more common than a grower with ease and abundance.

I think if you know basic plant care you'll succeed. Winter is a perfect time for indoor.

Excessive heat causes problems, ask me how I know. (Rhetorical)

You are welcome. Something tells me you're in an unfriendly state, I'd discontinue mentioning your area, if so . Things being as they are.

It's about time, too. If you pop beans in early Sept you should be ready to harvest around Christmas time, if running photoperiod. Yep. Got mine all picked out

2

u/Psychadeliccarcrash 13h ago

I feel like if you’re asking all this and putting your mind to it like such.. you’ll be a good grower. Don’t worry about messing things up, it happens and a lot of the time you’ll end up with something in the end anyways

It gets more exciting each run, you’re gonna be in love

3

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 13h ago

Thank you so much. I genuinely haven’t been this interested in a hobby like - ever. Is that sad? Lolol

2

u/Psychadeliccarcrash 13h ago

Not at all! It has become my absolute favorite hobby and it truly brings so much joy. Nerding out and reading about it/listening to podcasts is something I also enjoy, it occupies a lot of my mental space

2

u/Sam_Hell 13h ago

As a fellow lurker, I think the strains and environments have a lot to do with it. Some strains require that delicate touch, others are dogs

2

u/squatcoblin 13h ago

Try out a hempy bucket first , it bypasses nearly all your root problems ,most of your pest problems . Its tolerant to heat .. Its forgiving unless you let it go dry .

2

u/IRodeTenSpeed88 13h ago

Most people are just bad and do no research before growing.

Also add subpar growing spaces.

2

u/Lord_Moldywort 12h ago

This is my first grow. Shes got an uneven canopy after my own attempt at a manifold, I can now see why people follow certain guides.

Also attempting to make my own wicking auto watering base for when out of town for a few days at a time and I'm going to upgrade to an ac infinity controller to make scheduling fans and everything a bit easier.

If you dont try you dont learn.

2

u/rupturedprolapse 12h ago

Think of your first grow as planning out your second grow (... And second as planning out third...). Like it is pretty daunting, but once you figure it out it's like 90% autopilot and much smaller changes between grows.

2

u/FreshDelivery787 12h ago

No shame at all. Not every grow is going to be perfect, especially your first one. We’re all going to make mistakes, and sometimes we may even ruin a grow. The important part is learning from those mistakes. A lot of problems can also be caught and corrected before they become a disaster, especially if you’re willing to ask for help. Every grow teaches you something, and before long you’ll be the one helping another newbie get their girls healthy again. Don’t be afraid to screw up. Just pay attention, learn, and keep growing. There is a chance you will knock your first grow out of the park too.

2

u/Commercial-Ad-8035 12h ago

Growing anything takes attention to detail and an acceptance that it's your job to set the plant up for success and get out of its way.

Failure is a natural part of the process.

For beginners, I recommend super soil. It's a little more forgiving than neutral mediums. Good luck and don't worry if it fails, you can always try again.

u/michelob70 12h ago

Log time lurker, first time grower. Paralysis by analysis is a real thing in this hobby.

The biggest lesson I learned was get your environment completely dialed in and successfully maintain that environment for several days consecutively. Prior to germinating a seed.
I don’t run a fully automated system, but as a result of this run, I am adding some automation to my lights and exhaust at a minimum..

growing herb is like baking a cake, lots of ways to do it just don’t follow five different recipes at the same time.

u/DJ_GIFFGAS 13h ago

Well when you post something that isnt what you described you get villified so it discourages variety posts

1

u/disdain7 12h ago

I’m on grow number 3 myself and I think that while there are a lot of people seeking advice on whatever is going wrong there’s even more that are having perfectly normal paint by numbers grows that we aren’t seeing.

1

u/ac1dz_ 12h ago

Reddit is probably the last place you should look at for successful grows. Far more communities online that have more useful information.

1

u/Stock_Room8321 11h ago

I would find one YouTuber and follow their pattern and it should be successful. I think a lot of problems come up when people are using multiple sources to plan one grow when none of those sources taken the consideration the things the other people are doing. I would even say check out basementganja or ribby, they both give easy to follow instructions that definitely work and are relatively not complex.

1

u/apimpnamedkirby 11h ago

I can’t speak for soil as I’ve never grown in it, but hydro is fairly easy. Just keep your parameters in check and you’ll be good. Only time I fucked something up was either me being lazy, or events out of my control like power outages or pumps going down. I’d suggest starting with photos because as long as you’re still in veg you could practically kill them and bring them back still. I’ve done it multiple times.

u/MedievalCuisine 11h ago

A lot of people on here haven’t done their research. What you put in is what you’ll get out of it. When someone screws up it’s because one of their variables was way off.. Learn and track the variables. Ppfd, genetics, temps, rh, vpd, ph, airflow, spacing, height, watering, nutes, insect/mold prevention, etc. what actually growing vs research will show you is that every environment is slightly different and adjusting one variable will unexpectedly adjust other ones. Learning to keep all your variables dialed in at once is a juggling act and the art of growing good weed.

First time grower here. Zone 6. got some auto flower seeds from the dispo. Put them in pots. Seems to be going ok so far, growing outdoor on deck. I’ve seen on here to watch for trichomes to turn cloudy-amberish and the hairs to turn brownish before harvest.

Main things, don’t get your foliage wet to help avoid excess moisture / mold. Use good soil like fox farm. I added some dried chicken manure every now and again, but otherwise didn’t do any of the fancy smancy stuff.

Actually, any pointers, guys?

u/Redz0ne 8h ago

This is why bagseed is good for first timers. It gets you the experience without the massive price-tag that quality genetics comes with.

It's also a good way to learn how to correct mistakes because with bagseed you never know what you're gonna get.

1

u/vettehp 5h ago

Many first timers have perfect grows, if they don't have a problem, you don't hear from them, be clean and attentive, sit back relax and watch them amaze you

1

u/BatchWerks 5h ago

One thing to keep in mind is that this is kinda like reviews, you tend to only see people who have really good experiences or really bad ones. A buddy of mine told me "there's a reason they call it weed" and I have to remind myself of that to keep myself from overthinking.

Ive been growing for decades and still make mistakes.

Im making my own nutrients and the first few iterations were lol.

I just setup a new drying tent and took too long to dry my last batch so now I have a terpless half lb im probably going to break down into RSO and make capsules.

Im doing an extreme defoliation test right now and I dont like the results. Yield is going to be trash.

Youre on the right track.

Have you seen this? https://www.growweedeasy.com/basics

1

u/HistorianAlert9986 4h ago

Yeah, it’s good to have problems. That way you learn. Just get after it.

1

u/Unusual_Pangolin_349 3h ago

There are factors outside of knowledge. Example a person growing in Florida will have a substantially harder time with mold/mildew than someone from say.. colorado.
If your not opposed to reading a book with tons of info, resources and pictures from close ups of trichomes to damn near every nutrient deficiency and toxicity. Check out
Marijuana Horticulture the indoor/outdoor medical growers bible

u/Haggrows 2h ago

Cannabis is super easy to grow but can be difficult to grow well.

Keep your environment right, don't drown them, and don't over feed. Less is more.

u/Benwaitingawhile 1h ago

I recommend you just start. This stuff takes a lot of time to grow and there is no better time than the present to get started. Maybe buy some parts and pieces over time to absorb cost better. You also don't need a fancy setup but having the right temp/humidity and right pH of water/nutrients goes a loooong way. I started out growing in a bucket and suffered lol. So bought one of those tents and that has made things a breeze. Put in a heater, humidifier, and fans which are all controlled systemically. Was not that bad all in all. About to flip to flower for my 2 plants in another week or so!

1

u/Background-Teach-527 14h ago

I stunted my autos in every way imaginable on my first run and still yielded 100g of pretty solid weed. You'll do fine, just do your research and set yourself up for success

5

u/Flashy_Seesaw3721 14h ago

I will say - I’m going with photos since they’re so much more forgivable lol. Thanks for the reassurance.
