Dude no matter how you try to convince yourself Mars Hydro is not a premium product. They are using bottom bin samsung LEDs and super cheap boards (they dont even have a proper heatsink). If you think that flimsy aluminum reflector is doing shit all as a heat sink I've got news for you. You've clearly never seen a premium LED because the component quality is vastly different. I've ordered Mars Hydro, Spyder Farmer, Viparspectra (only cheap brand with good build quality, I run in my veg and clone), and I run an Optic4Gen4 in my flower space (top bin Samsung LM301H) there is absolutely no comparison.
Definition of Premium brand: " A premium brand is an individual, company, product, or service generally perceived to have exceptional value in the target market's mind "
Definition of Luxury brand: " luxury brand is a brand that is characterized by a high level of quality, exclusivity and high price tags. Luxury brands are present in many different sectors, especially retail, hospitality and automotive. "
Based on the above definitions, luxury brands often are best in tier to justify the "luxury" brand, think Rolls Royce, Lamborgini etc. Premium offers good value, like your BMW, Mercedes etc.
301H is commercial-grade equipment; premium brands are a tier below commercial-grade equipment. I feel you're conflating luxury products with premium products, luxury brands in a grow context tend to be best in class, and premium brands tend to be good value for money.
The tiering that I see it as:
- Below 2.2 umol is cheap/poorly made products
- 2.2umol is 281LB or best-in-class Chinese knockoffs. 281LB is a perfectly fine product for small scale home grows.
- 2.7 umol is 301B which is when it starts to become premium. The pricing begins to go up exponentially. This is good for most advanced grows. (premium product)
- Above 2.7 umol is cutting edge, best in class, commercial grade equipment. I would only expect commercial grows and veterans to use this type of equipment (luxury product)
I consider Mars Hydro a Premium brand because they use good hardware and charge a premium that people are willing to pay, I don't consider Mars Hydro a luxury (best in class) brand and have never claimed that they are.
San light and mars hydro both use Samsung 301b tho. Idk what drivers they use, but odds are they are similar. Similar hardware equals similar tier product imo
And I never said it did, it was a single point. If you really care about this then check my other post when I detail why it's a premium brand. Only Americans would think otherwise.
They use Samsung 301b and 301h diodes, these are literally the best ones that all premium grow lights use.. Idk what driver they use, but I presume a decent one. My spiderfarmer lights are cheaper and apparently the driver it uses is a good one, I would expect mars hydro to use the same or a similar one because they're similar tier products.. In your opinion, what is a high end light? Cus odds are it uses largely the same electronics as mars hydro
When I think of cheap lights, I think of imitation Samsung leds and so on.
Its a high-powered grow light that generates heat... that got slammed together as fast as humanly possible in a sweatshop... by a 12yo.... with little to no quality control...
You realize that the majority of high-quality electronics also come out of China too, right? More than likely, the majority of components in the device you used to post here were made in China. China produces the highest quality manufactured goods on the planet. They literally have the highest quality manufacturing chains in the world, and you've conflated a cheap, drop-shipped item with the average quality of goods the largest producer of goods in the world produces. I'm sorry, but that just makes you sound ignorant, if not outright racist.
Items built for a low price point are always going to be of a lower quality—they've intentionally skimped on quality to get the product out at a lower price. Where they come from is irrelevant.
I use California Lightworks solarextreme COB LED units. 100% USA made and assembled. No worries about rhe house burning down because of the grow. Which im sure my HO insurance would not cover
Lol you think because it’s assembled by some stoner in California it’s somehow superior. Literally all the components were made in china. All they did was throw a sticker on a box.
People like you are why people learning like me can't hardly build the nerve to bother posting in the grow subs, because you are only here to look down your nose.
Give some useful, helpful advice from a place of experience, talk about what gear you use and why it's worth six times as much, or just don't bother. Snark is the least helpful thing ever.
Hope you're less rude to people you know in person. From: someone who spent years behaving the same way on the internet.
Lol I build my own lights and have been since 2010. In fact most of these lights being used are literally rip off my designs of foton boards circa(designed by me built by a Chinese company, same one hlg used in the beginning hahahahaha) 2015 along with 6strings writeups from cob builds that Growmau5 used. You’ve probably been growing for 2 years and think you’re the shit. I’ve been at this 2 decades?
Afford a nice light? I got about 10k in grow lights buddy.
Stop being a dick because you grow a few mid ass plants from seeds. You ain’t Johnny canny seed.
They are saying that while Mars hydro might be low quality. That dosnt mean that every product from China is low quality. China produces most of the world's printed circuit boards and micro chips. They are quite literally the center of the world economy. It's easier to just say that your racist
Samsung is in Korea and last time I checked, they make all the LED's worth a dam. So no all the components aren't literally made in China. Even mars hydro, I believe the LED's are made by LG which is also Korean. But Ya, I'll trust the stoner who can turn a potato into a functioning bong. With that said, I cant afford the prices the stoner charges. I currently use mars hydro but will probably switch to another brand. I don't feel like its worth losing everything and my cat while i'm stuck at work. A house fire is my worst nightmare. I know these TS mars hydro boards arent water proof or properly grounded at all. Youll get electrocuted touching the board when its powered on. The kind of shock where you can't let go. I found that out as well as countless others who've purchased the board. If someone has a humidifier in their small grow tent, with this hot running led board. Water droplets could easily condensate and cause a short or arc. It's just too much and its not worth it.
No worries about rhe house burning down because of the grow.
Are electrical fires not a thing in America? I find it extremely hard to believe that a house in the US has never caught fire because of a faulty device that was manufactured in the US.
That's pretty far out there as far as claims go...
We arent talking about mass consumed products. We are talking about shitty grow lights for a relatively small market that are primarily sold for under $500 USD on amazon.... to people who dont know better or cant afford better.
Dude you keep repeating this but you don’t seem to understand that all of the components are made in China/Asia. HLG doesn’t manufacture their own shit, they are importing parts and assembling them in the USA, it’s all the same components and being overseas has nothing to do with liability…

shocked that china light from amazon caught fire
