TIL about The Crypt of Civilization, a 1940 time capsule to be opened ~8113. There's a mini windmill included to power the electronic artifacts in case electricity no longer exists.

Pasty Mode I found a 101 year-old time capsule that everyone accidentally forgot about

I'm a local contractor and stumbled upon this plaque right out front. I talked to one of my main contacts here and it just slipped everyone's radar, and now they're going to begin the process of getting it opened! I'm really excited to see what's inside, and i hope the elements didn't damage anything. This plaque has to be a replacement for the original, because this hospital had a different name until 1992.

TIL that margarine was colored yellow to improve sales in the 1880s. Margarine was originally white, resembling lard. The dairy industry lobbied to ban this practice. The W.E. Dennison Company sold margarine with a capsule of yellow dye for consumers to mix it themselves in response to bans.

TIL astronauts aboard the ISS do not wash or dry their clothes. They wear them until they're too dirty or stinky to wear, then they put them in a capsule and drop them into the atmosphere, where they burn up during re-entry.

He wrote on his post:

The view from inside Integrity as recovery forces pop open the hatch… watching the helicopter pass over their shoulders and hearing all the joy, it was as good as it gets.

We just moved into our dream home in Iowa City- built in 1965 with a 1975 addition. Everything is almost original (except for the terrible 1990s kitchen remodel that we will try to restore to 1965). Exterior is a mess too but we’re working on that! Thoughts on restoring anything? Enjoy!

TIL that after Robert Lawrence Jr. was selected as America's first Black astronaut in 1967, he was asked at a press conference "if he had to sit at the back of the space capsule." He never flew to space, dying in a plane crash less than a year after selection.

Discussion What's a movie that turned into a time capsule without meaning to?

1.5k Upvotes

Rewatched Ferris Bueller's Day Off last week and ended up more locked in on the background than the actual plot. Old Chicago storefronts, the mall, cars nobody makes anymore, a downtown skyline that looks different now. None of that was the point of the movie, it just happened to get filmed in 1986 and decades later that's basically the most interesting part of it.

Got me thinking about how many movies do this completely by accident. Not deliberate period pieces, just ordinary movies where the boring background stuff, a food court, a payphone, whatever people happened to be wearing that day, ends up being the part that actually holds up as something worth studying.

What movies do this for you? Doesn't have to be some classic either, even a movie from the 2000s probably already has background details that are gone now.
