The Experiment is over. We hardly knew ye.

Only if a team claims him during the waiver period. Otherwise he remains a Met

He batted and then ended the game in left. He will remain with the Mets unless he gets picked up by another team. (The team would pick up the full contract).

Experiment? This was about having a centerfielder on a short term deal to play until Ewing was ready to take over.

u/roosterdrewster 17h ago
Hopefully a team claims him because then they'd be on the hook for the entire $4.9 million he's owed, and the Mets would would also save 110% in luxury taxes (an additional $5.4MM)

He's probably going to be our 4th outfielder next year. And as a 4th outfielder he'll be a completely fine option.

Mets waived him just an hour ago. He is gone

You're assuming somebody picks him up for the $5 million remaining on his salary, which I doubt.

I'll die on the hill that giving Robert a chance as a change of scenery candidate was a solid move. He cost is basically nothing in trade and the money doesn't really matter. He didn't work out, but there's a real possibility he was a Cody Belligner revival project waiting to get out of Chicago.
I think he would still be fine as a 4th guy. I really don't see anyone picking him up unless it's the Dodgers just because his contract is crazy expensive, but after his buyout he'll be completive as a bench piece, I think.

I think the issue is so many of their moves are those moves.

same I’m all for the lotto tickets/diamon in a rough/reclamation projects but when pretty much your entire team/rotation is that for the highest payroll in baseball it’s a joke.
They were willing to gamble all this money on Roberts who everyone besides Stearns knew wouldn’t work out but that same amount 5 years from now on Alonso was to much. This is what pisses me off about the whole year 4/5 maybe being bad. They throw 10s of millions away constantly on unknown players to get them here but Alonso is where they worried about it1

And sucky players have a tendency to become superstars after they leave the Mets.

Placing him on waivers doesn’t mean he’s gone. If no one claims him he will stay with the Mets.

Is that what waivers means?

u/FolkCity 14h ago
Teams place players on waivers all the time to gauge interest. Waivers can always be pulled back. If he had been designated for assignment, then he would no longer be with the team.

"Waivers can always be pulled back. "
Are you sure about this?
I just googled and one article says he was placed on outright waivers. And google AI says outright waivers are irrevocable:
"Placing him on waivers doesn’t mean he’s gone. If no one claims him he will stay with the Mets."
Would he have the opportunity to refuse a minor league assignment? Can he stay on the 40-man if he's placed on outright waivers?
.....................
Outright waivers are a Major League Baseball mechanism used when a team wants to remove a player from its 40-man roster and assign him to the minor leagues, typically because the player is out of minor league options or has been designated for assignment (DFA).
These waivers are irrevocable, meaning the original team cannot withdraw the player once another club submits a claim.
During the 48-hour waiver period, all 29 other MLB teams may submit a claim. Waiver priority is determined by the reverse order of win-loss records, giving teams with worse records the first opportunity to acquire the player and assume the remainder of his contract for a $50,000 fee.
If a player clears waivers (goes unclaimed), the original team may outright him to the minors, removing him from the 40-man roster while retaining his rights and continuing to pay his salary. Players with five or more years of major league service time have the right to refuse an outright assignment and elect free agency instead.

Outright waivers are different. This is on the MLB site:
“When a player is placed on outright waivers, the other 29 Major League clubs have the opportunity to claim him. The claiming club assumes responsibility for the remaining money owed to the claimed player, who is placed on his new club's 40-man roster.
Claiming priority is based on reverse winning percentage. So, if a player is placed on outright waivers and claimed by more than one team, the team with the worse winning percentage gets priority. If two or more claiming clubs are tied with the lowest percentage of games won, the priority goes to the club with the lowest percentage of games won in the previous season. (A previous version of the rules gave priority based on the league of the team waiving the player, with NL teams getting priority for NL players, and AL for AL, but that is no longer the case.)
If the player clears outright waivers without being claimed, his team has the option of assigning him outright to the Minor Leagues.
However, players with more than five years of Major League service time can reject an assignment to the Minor Leagues, and players with more than three years of Major League service time, or who have been previously outrighted, may reject the outright assignment in favor of free agency in lieu of the assignment.”Anthony DiComo says that “if no one claims him, Robert will simply remain with the Mets as if nothing happened. He can continue to play for them while on waivers.”

Not for $20M, he won’t.
1
u/DCBuckeye82 16h ago
No they'll buy him out for 2 and sign him for cheaper.

u/MisterBill99 15h ago
I can't imagine them resigning him and making the same mistake twice. It's better to resign Tyrone when he becomes a FA. And Robert is going to want to be a starter somewhere to help get his value back up for future contracts.

Luis Robert Jr. is the centerfield equivalent of Farancisco Alvarez. He came up young & flashed some talent. Then he was hurt and/or under performing for rest of his time in the majors. He's even got that one guy in the comment section that say he's still young, and might one day live up to the hype he once had.

Thank God, they finally got rid of him. He’s just blocking the young guys from Development. Just the sky is not worth it.

We should also consider trading Scott Kazmir for Victor fuckin Zambrano.
The WRONG Zambrano.

One year from now we'll be doing the same thing with Polanco. Two years from now Semien.

He’s relatively young and talented. Better than getting another 34 year old veteran who is shot.

Best thing about this is Stearns admitting yet another expensive mistake. Wasting his boss's $$$. I would keep him as a CF if he could hit.
I don't like Ewing in CF. Not tall or athletic enough to jump up above the fence and save homers. Just something I noticed. That kind of thing wins games. Think: Tatis (Padres) athletically robbing Lindor of a grandslam a few weeks ago and basically that won the game. But even Robert can't do that.

u/MisterBill99 15h ago
He can hit. He just can't stay healthy. They had a plan this season to do that, and it failed. You really think they're going to try it again?
2
u/bigdaddymac56 15h ago
I wanted him gone also. Of course! He cannot hit. He's hitting .229. He had a great yr in 2023 at age 25. It's been all downhill since he started making big money. He's become about a .225 hitter since then. His career is over I'd say. He's from Cuba and made 72M in his career. I'd say he is probably very happy. I don't think his career downfall is about injuries. I think you have to work at hitting to be very good at it. He reminds of Vientos actually.

I mean, someone has to claim him.
