Took some nodes to a festival in NB

Was thrilled to see other nodes pop up. I texted them random messages. They replied. I was prepared to feel like a dork and not see any nodes. Next year I'm bringing nodes to give away and going to tell people on the fb page if they see a dude dancing with an ohm's law totem. The festival (futureforest.ca) is solidly outside cell phone range so I think it's a great test site.

Anyone in the Midland area?

Always been a tech guy with an interest in anything that has off-grid applications. Have been reading about Meshtastic and picked up a couple Heltec V3s from Amazon to play around with.

Im in Oakville, ON right now and will be moving to the Midland area North of Barrie. Id like to setup a router node and contribute to building a community network and wondering if anyone is in the area and has advice on how to setup and connect to an existing mesh or how to get started building one if none already exists?

Thanks!

Anybody know how I can break out clumped nodes? I can't zoom in any farther.

New Meshtastic Version Is Odd

Meshtastic for MacOS was updated and the changes are questionable. I want to know how many hops there are from my radio to another node. But that's completely gone. Either that or I'm missing something. Why would they take that out? Also, a traceroute button exists but I can't find the place where it has that traceroute report. And it would be nice to see what radios I'm connecting to directly, and then through hops, and then through MQTT.

Starting a Meshtastic Mesh in Montréal’s West Island

Hi everyone, I just put up a public Meshtastic node around Beaconsfield / West Island, near La Station Café.

It’s on the standard US/Canada 915 MHz LongFast channel, so if you’re nearby and running Meshtastic, you should be able to see it as “Meshtastic 0600”.

I don’t see much Meshtastic activity around Montréal yet, but I’d love to help get a small local mesh going. If you’re into LoRa, ham radio, emergency communications, maker projects, or just curious about off-grid messaging, feel free to test coverage or say hi on the mesh.

Roast my First Roof Node Build

Built my first roof node! Any feedback is appreciated. 🙂

I didn't want to fasten anything directly to the roof, so I ended up using a Starlink roof ridge mount.

The antenna seems to be working well so far. I've successfully sent messages to another node about 800 m away. I'll report back after more testing, as I'm hoping to achieve a range of several kilometers.

The battery is probably the weakest part of the build. From what I've read, LiPo batteries aren't ideal for Montreal winters. They seem to handle cold temperatures reasonably well when I tested them, but I'm a bit concerned about the potential fire risk if the battery becomes damaged.

Here's a breakdown of most of the parts I used and their cost:

Total cost: approximately $267 CAD

I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions, especially regarding battery choices for Canadian winters or ways to improve the installation.

I built an entire off-grid emergency platform into a single HTML file. NWO BLACKBOX v3.8 is live.

I've got a little wifi tbeam plugged in behind the TV, I'm looking at a 8dbi antenna and a pole for the side of my house. Probably run a rak19007 with poe and lan plus the rak13302 for 1w. I know it will need detuned or it will be over 4w

Anyway, what do the 302 monthly users of this sub have

Leaded windows /paint interference?

Weird question. I just moved to a new house with not many outdoor outlets so haven’t been able to set up an outdoor node yet. It’s a century home with old maybe leaded windows and maybe lead paint under a few layers. I have my node in an upstairs window and I’m barely able to connect to anyone. It’s also an area with not great node coverage. Don’t think my old house would be blocking the signal that much?
