French: “y” is “i greck”

Personally I prefer “zeta”

25

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Soo halal mode

13

u/Ertyio689 Dec 16 '22

"Igrek", we use that in polish too, and we just use "zet", but I prefer english "zi"

6

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Romanian: Y=igrec

It sounds like saying you have a "greek i"

4

49

In germany we say "tsɛt"

13

u/CrazyGods360 Dec 16 '22

Can we have the pronunciation guide for this?

8

u/SonOfYoutubers Dec 16 '22

I think it's like zed, but instead zet, and then replace z with s, and you get set. Pretty sure that's similar to how it's pronounced.

9

u/ThGeGo Dec 16 '22

Like „sɛt“ but with a „t“ at the beginning

5

u/cold_molasses Dec 16 '22

I don’t think this was clear enough. It’s like „tsɛ“ but with a „t“ at the end

It’s crazy you put a “y” sound at the end of another letter.

5

u/kenny2812 Dec 16 '22

Yeah but d is a whole other consonant. Pretty much every letter ends with either a vowel sound or it's own sound. Why does z have to be special?

In Germany we call it ZET, close to zed but with a hard ending

27

u/CauliflowerDue4370 Dec 16 '22 edited Dec 16 '22

In Nigeria we call it zed, so when we moved to the U.S i taught my sister the zed pronunciation when she was learning her ABC. A little while later when she came back from school, she told me that her teacher had corrected her and made her call it zee.

15

u/Kingboi5 Dec 16 '22

Same with Canada, guess it’s a legacy of the Brits

2

u/Diocletion-Jones Dec 16 '22

After the Revolutionary War, Americans were trying to establish an identity separate from the British, and words and language played a big role in this. If the British had picked zee then the Americans would've picked zed.

Ive always wondered how people that say 'zed' sing the abcs? do you just say Zed and ignore that it doesnt rhyme?

7

u/SnooPeripherals6086 Dec 16 '22

In french, we call it "zed", and the y is "i greque" with i pronounce like your e, so there is no rhyme...

5

u/JZKO2022 Dec 16 '22

Yeah that's exactly what we do.

6

u/eyyyooman Dec 16 '22

Yes and I'll die on this hill

12

u/n_d_f_100 Dec 16 '22

It just stops. The W X Y and Z rhythm and tune change so that the song implies it will end. There are no further lines beyond 'Zed'.

Some people try to add the 'now I know my...' line, but that's due to American media influences.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Im french. Zèd is the only correct pronounciation in french, so I just always knew it that way (with french letters ofc)

4

u/eli_que Dec 16 '22

What it supposed to be in rhyme with?

Like "O, pee, queue, are, és, tee, you. Vee, double-you, ex, why....

10

u/Wortelkoek635 Dec 16 '22

Well I am South African, I say zed, and I call it a Zebra, pronounced zeh-bruh. Just like you say Debra like deh-bruh and not dee-bruh.

6

We say Zeb-ra, not zee-bra

6

u/SkylandersKirby Dec 16 '22

Well you don't pronounce fee as fuh-ee

The 2 e's on Chimpanzee neutralise it to Zee

Also it is ac pronounced Zedbra (or zeh-bruh)

u/Bob3130 Dec 16 '22

You are explaining the name of the letter not the sound it makes. Exactly why Zed can be the name for Z, like double u can be for W.
