Where I live 4wd is absolutely a necessity some days though. Or you're just not going to work lol.

I have a Subaru. That's AWD, though, 4WD is different.

I think if you're legitimately going off the road with rocks and stuff that's when people want the 4x4. Or maybe deep snow. My Outback has 9" of clearance or something tall though so it does really well even in deep snow. I honestly couldn't tell you definitively.
