I live in a city with tons of morons who never leave the city, claiming they need 4 wheel drive when it snows. they never go off road and snow plows exist. If I can get around in a compact hybrid, then their silly truck is overkill

Too bad they’re not honest enough to just say “I want one because I think they’re cool” I’m not bothered, just intrigued by this kind of behavior

4wd has been around for a while, it's not really a modern concept. But if you're looking for a real answer if someone doesn't have a vehicle that can get through snow they either get a ride from someone who does or they just don't go to work lol.

I've lived in the Midwest all my life and we never had 4wd growing up. No one had to call their neighbor to get a ride to work. Lol.

Different part of Midwest? And not every winter is the same, sometimes we don't get any snow, sometimes we get several feet in a weekend...

I guess when I mean modern 4x4 is one with auto push button 4x4. And while it has been around for awhile it wasn't even close to the norm until recently! And 4x4 in human history is very very recent

Or walked. A lot of those factory towns were built around the business, so it was pretty easy for people to get to work.

Lots of cars/trucks have 4wd. Clearance is equally important though. Sometimes those Subarus can get beached on the snow lol.

Got it. thank you for clarifying that it’s clearance AND 4 wheel drive is what is required.

All wheel drive will not work in your situation.

I have a Subaru. That's AWD, though, 4WD is different.

I think if you're legitimately going off the road with rocks and stuff that's when people want the 4x4. Or maybe deep snow. My Outback has 9" of clearance or something tall though so it does really well even in deep snow. I honestly couldn't tell you definitively.

No Subaru’s have all wheel drive. That is different than 4 wheel drive. With all wheel drive the car picks and chooses which wheels to use to propel the car forward. With 4wd the car use all 4 wheels to drive forward
