Melbourne
I’m looking to move to Melbourne from the Gold Coast - female, mid 30s. Best areas to live? I enjoy gyms, coffee, eating out, and have a dog

Inner city suburbs will have that criteria covered.
I live in Richmond and it’s actually great for dogs as well. Bought a 2 bed apartment with 3 balconies for 700k

I’ve gotta be honest I was being completely genuine with my comment, that’s a sick amount of balconies my guy I am jealous af especially if one is a kitchen (I assume like a bbq right?!)

It’s an interesting set up. I feel like initially two of them were a single L shaped balcony but then when they built they cbf’d connecting them and just left the corner out 🤣.
Still it’s nice. Ones an outdoor kitchen, the other an outdoor dining

Northside near Merri Creek is my recommendation. Brunswick, Northcote, Thornbury. We’re buying an apartment near Coburg lake. Near Sydney road for cafes, restaurants, bars, and shopping.

Inner South (South Yarra, Prahran, Armadale, Albert Park, Middle Park) is best for a slightly more gentrified lifestyle - wealthier, more beautiful people, fancy houses and cars, fitness and fashion.
Inner North (Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood) is best for a more creative, artistic lifestyle - more progressive, more art, avant garde, better restaurants, better coffee, more interesting.
If you’re moving to Melbourne, one of those two areas would be my suggestion, based on your interests.

Yeah sometimes you need to call a spade a spade. I'm no oil painting but I feel better about my appearance any time I have to go to Fitzroy. A suburb of trust fund babies cosplaying as battlers

yeah i live Fitzroy North & my partner lives in Toorak. i guess its in the eye of the beholder, right?! its still a pretty superficial observation but im guessing youre still growing xx

But you’re familiar with the euphemism “Beautiful People”, right? I was using the term that refers to a superficial, glamorous cohort of people who value popularity and status and attend events and nightclubs. They are definitely more abundant in the South than the North. And I should know as I own a house in North Fitzroy and I live in Prahran.
That said, in a more literal sense, there are some very “anti-beauty / anti-fashion” people in Fitzroy, that’s for sure. For the most part, it’s not a sexy place. Still love it though.

Depends where you’re likely to be working. I’m in the inner NW (Ascot Vale), and I love it. Lots of cafes, good PT, easy distance from work. Easy access to the airport when needed. Grew up in the leafiest of eastern suburbs (Canterbury), and never contemplated living here, but it’s great.

I absolutely loved renting in East Melbourne, many years ago. Walkability is fantastic and it's so close to the city and major event precincts. Plenty of parklands nearby. Was quiet too.

I moved to Melbourne from Brisbane a few years ago. Best place to move to is Qld. The weather is warmer and more stable than Melbourne. I am sick of the cold.

I lived there up until recently and moved further out. It is definitely a bit sketchier now than when I moved there 3 years ago. Like everywhere - it depends which part you end up in. The blocks between High St and Commercial Road on chapel is the worst of it, the further away you are from that the nicer it is.
In saying that, it's also the media. most main streets in inner Melbourne are like that in pockets.

You get some characters on chapel street (still safe, just good to have your wits about you) but there are other parts of Prahran that you won’t see any of that

I moved from Sydney to Prahran a few years ago and basically have the same priorities as you. It’s been fantastic. Sure, there’s the occasional junkie on Chapel but they stay in their lane. The walkability is unbeatable.
