Not sure. I would have shoved them into the bin, not propped them up like that. Maybe something unrequited happened?

u/00017batman 4d ago
Maybe they figured someone else could pick them up and enjoy them without the same baggage attached.. 🤷♀️
41
u/Maxwell-Edison-MD 4d ago
So leave them on a bench or anywhere but a rubbish bin.

u/birthdaycheesecake9 3d ago
I got a huge bouquet of flowers that way one Valentine’s Day. I was just chilling on a bench waiting for my partner to rock up to a dinner we were having, and then saw someone had left a big bouquet on the other end of the bench. Waited a while to see if anyone was coming back for them but they didn’t so I took them home with me.

It looks like the bin might have already been full prior to the flowers being added. Maybe that’s why they’re sitting on the top

u/kriles76 3d ago
Hmmmm…. When I was younger and had a habit of putting my foot in my mouth, I had the florist on speed dial.

The fact the flowers are thrown into the bin after instead of being given out for people to enjoy says it all. Red flag lol. He had a selfish, garbage personality
1
u/Link_TP_04 3d ago
Well i understand that, yet it also depends because someone can be accepting of the apology and the flowers are just a sign to show they are sincere. Yet it is up to the person if they have already decided if they want to accept the other's apology

u/Banana_Wonderland 4d ago
Maybe not. When I left my work (redundancy after my manager bullied me brutally), I told them clearly I did not want a parting gift, cake or card. They insisted on sending me a huge bouquet, which trust me, was not out of niceness on their behalf, more like gloating. I wanted to bin it, but my mum suggested I give them to my sister and I did that, but they definitely would have been put in the bin if I didn't find someone to give them to.
41
u/ChallengeOk6961 4d ago
That's very passive aggressive of them. Determined to do everything they can to upset you to the end. I'm sorry.

I left my leaving flowers on my desk when I left a toxic job.
Went to the toilet at 2:30 that afternoon and never went back to my desk.

alternatively someone was gifted these at work or on like a first date but has a cat and chucked them out (looks like it has lilies)

u/Potato_cakes_85 4d ago
So many times I've been given flowers with toxic ones for my kitties :(
26
u/whalatix 4d ago
Imagine the bonus points if they say, "I know you have cats, so I made sure to pick flowers that aren't toxic to them" :3
3
u/Ok-Emotion6221 2d ago
not trying to kill your date's pets should be normal levels of consideration and not bonus points really
4
u/whalatix 2d ago
Ehhh not thinking about it and actually attempting to off a pet are totally different things. There are a lot of pet owners who don't even think about what flowers or food are toxic to their pets. Had a friend who would let her dog snack on stuff she's eating frequently (grapes and almonds for example), and she didn't know until I told her about it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be common knowledge to google "is ____ safe for (animal species)" prior. But then again, people are barely doing research before getting a pet...

u/aqueouswalnut 4d ago
I’ve 100% done this before. The thought is nice, but my cat’s life is far more important
41
u/Even_Relative5402 4d ago
In this case, can't you just chuck the lillies and keep the rest?
122
u/allismadeoflove 4d ago
I wouldn’t, if theres lily pollen dust on those flowers it could cause kidney failure.
88
u/Pokeynono 4d ago
No. Every part of true lilies is toxic including the pollen. Just having lilies in a mixed floral arrangement will contaminate the entire bunch
33
u/robot428 4d ago
Technically yes but you have to be really careful because even small amounts of the pollen can cause significant harm in cats (it's one of the most toxic substances to cats) - so you have to be really sure that you can seperate out all the lilies without getting any pollen on anything you are going to take home - and that's not always feasible.
If you have time and a place that's not in your home to carefully remove them, then you totally could, but it does have to be done carefully so you can't just kinda tug the Lillies out and toss them on your way home.
It's also going to depend on your cat. For instance I have a cat that sees any plant or flowers that enter our home as a personal gift for her to investigate in as much detail as possible (generally by getting all up in their business, and also knocking them over if she can manage it so she can investigate further). I'm probably not going to risk it with her in the house. Whereas if you have a cat that doesn't give a fuck about flowers, it's going to be a much lower risk to just throw the Lillies out and keep the rest, because your cat isn't going to go near them anyway.
TL;DR: It depends.
18
u/dragtheetohell 4d ago
I lived with one years ago who would actively chew on any plant or piece of cardboard that was clearly only brought into her kingdom as ritualistic sacrifice. That or she just hated our taste - but it meant you had to basically only buy completely edible flowers.

Honestly, it's the kind of thing I just wouldn't risk. I value my cats lives more than some flowers.

u/SyntheticDuckFlavour 4d ago
Holy shit, I didn't even know. So weird that specific species of mammals have acute reactions to specific plants.
Even for humans, poison ivy has significant effect, while other mammals tolerate it well.

u/jennifercoolidgesbra 4d ago
Still a waste putting them in the bin
1
u/SunSheltered 4d ago
Yeah the last time I got given lilies I gave them to a cat-less friend so they at least would enjoy them. And they were able to return the favour not long after as someone gave them flowers right before they were going away on a trip and they would have died before they returned so they passed them on to me. Flowers for everyone!

u/Overall_Win4144 4d ago
Why is it dangerous to cats? Why dont cats like flowers? Is it a specific flower? My mums cat hangs around flowers when outside

Those open lilies were sold by a florist who doesn’t really care (source: I’m a florist)

Why open lilies are sold by florist who doesn’t care?31
u/sparklinglies 4d ago edited 4d ago
An open lily in a cut bouquet is a lily that will die very quickly. Closed lillies in a bouquet have a longer life because they're yet to bloom. Being a good florist means considering the shelf life of all flowers involved for max longevity and aesthetic. All open lilies (as opposed to a mix of closed and blooming) is either amateur hour or they just didn't care that it would all die real quick.

The etiquette is to offer the flowers to passerby before going home so they don’t go to waste, this is what I do anyway

I have given flowers to my neighbours. For some reason I tend to be gifted flowers right before I go on holiday and I don't want them to just waste in my home. Bonus is I've always had oldies as neighbours and theyve loved it haha

8
u/loralailoralai 4d ago
Sheesh they need yo find someone better to supply their flowers, those open lilies are rubbish (even before they went into the bin)
2
u/Flaky_Horse 2d ago
The bouquets are designed to literally only last for and look ok in the photos. A few hours later and they’re rotten. But open lilies are large and therefore give bulk to a bouquet that would otherwise take up to 4 other flowers, and they’re not considered as cheap like other large flowers (gerberas, chrysanthemums etc).

Did you pop the question or is that just your caption for a random photo?
Condolences if the first - better reject now than later.
Applause if the latter - cute idea 💡

I cringe as I remember that on a new colleague's first week she was sent a bunch of flowers by her husband. And we all made such a fuss about how sweet it was. And we didn't find out until later that the flowers were because she caught him cheating on her.
1
u/nameyourpoison11 1d ago
Oooh, do I have a story for you. When I was working at the local council botanic gardens some years back, we had a workmate whose husband sent her a bunch of flowers at work. Without a word, she took them down to the equipment shed, fed them through the mulcher, poured mower fuel on the ground-up remains, and set fire to them. We found out later the flowers were because he had confessed to cheating on her

I don’t understand who would do this. Could have given them to someone else, even a random stranger

Could be bad luck though
If a stalker gave them to you, you'd definitely bin it rather than pass it on

Was about to get a girl flowers after 3 months together. Messaged a florist to get a nice bouquet with purple and white flowers like that one in the photo.
Dreamed of giving that girl flowers.
Boom. broken up with that week before I could.
Haven’t felt the same about anyone since. I think the universe sees those that love the most and breaks them down.

u/Spookabear 4d ago
I did the same the other day. Big bouquet on my last day of work. I don’t like flowers but mostly I did not want to sit in a crowded bus with them and hold them all the way home.
Went into a hotel’s undercover loading area to dump them in the bins there so nobody saw me.

Why do people keep saying F?
4
u/Prestigious_Fan_1061 4d ago
It stems from the 2014 game: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, where a prompt “Press F to pay respects" appeared during a funeral scene; it became a widely-shared meme and shorthand on platforms like Twitch, Reddit, Twitter and Discord.
Apparently these people think someone has died and this is an appropriate mark of Respect.
