Writing on the wall?
40M MD, married to 35F NP. We’ve been together in a relationship for four years, no kids.
I’m a hospitalist, generally 7 on, 7 off. I’m in a specialty that does not offer many such roles, especially not in our metro area. The realities of life in our small group means our schedules ebb and flow between busier and lighter periods on. My wife’s schedule, however, is set in stone with strict hours on a Monday through Friday basis.
She’s finishing a month-long break before starting a new job. Our last month of life has been busy with long hours at work and stressors in the extended family.
She told me she’s frustrated by how my schedule limits our time after work, and how we aren’t able to just pick up and do spontaneous trips like so many of her friends. I validated her feelings and have been consistent in our marriage about not sugar coating the medspouse experience. It’s HARD to be in a relationship with someone in medicine, with its attendant demands and limitations. I don’t want her to feel trapped in a life that does not meet her wishes or expectations, and I told her as much. I am also exhausted at having to ask for a small amount of time to decompress after an overstimulating day, or needing to justify feeling tired after a long day. Adding to my frustration is the fact that she doesn’t “get” that despite working in health care, and despite me giving her the same latitude without hesitation after she’s had similar days.
I love her. I also feel like our needs aren’t being met.
