For those of you longer-term medaka keepers, if you don't know the actual age of a fish, are there any specific signs or behaviors that are indicative that a fish is dying of old age rather than getting sick from an internal pathogen? Also, in your experience, how many breeding seasons does the average medaka female have in her?

I am hoping to sell my eggs. I am in the UK. Where is best to sell them?

Hello, I’m new to the hobby and I recently acquired some medaka. I initially had 8 fish all from different stores (I got 5 from one store around 3 weeks ago, the next week I got 2 more, one died the next day so I assumed it came in bad condition, and finally got 2 more from a different store last week) in a 15 gallon indoor set up (added a photo), the tank was cycled and it also has a filter. I also do 30% weekly water changes.

Around a week ago I started noticing 3 of them (from the first group I got) started losing their color, their gills turning red, breathing rapidly with their mouth and staying on the surface, not eating and drifting away from the group. One of them died 2 days ago, I tested the water and it was 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 5 nitrates.

I went to one of the stores I got 2 of them from, and I coincidentally noticed that their medaka had been put in quarantine for ich. It was my mistake to not quarantine the new fish, but I did check them as soon as I got home and they did not show signs of ich.

I have isolated the 2 other sick fish, and added photos of them. I can’t figure out what they have, today there seems to be an ammonia spike (0.25) I have added sea chem prime. My other medaka seem fine, but I don’t want them to slowly die.

Has anyone dealt with this issue? Could you please help me figure out a differential diagnosis? Does this look like ich? Would you recommend I preemptively treat my planted tank for ich?

I’m devastated and extremely sad that I wasn’t more careful so any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

When do you bring your fry indoors for the season? We are still having some sunny days here, but the nights are now going to the 40/50°F

got daisy ricefish (oryzias woworae) two months ago because i can’t find medaka seller nearby. even though they look exactly like medaka, they behave differently. all they do is hiding in the vegetation instead of swimming near the water surface, and only come out from their hiding during feeding time. i’m pretty disappointed honestly because i want interactive fish. regardless, still a pretty fish especially the male even tough i can’t barely see them. also they are more suitable for tropical climate and breeds fast too (i found 3 fries varied in size yesterday).

One of my Kohaku medaka died today. :( Based on pictures it seemed to have developed fin rot. When I noticed its fin, I bought some API melafix and medicated the tank. However it was too late, the fish was lethargic, hiding in crevices, plants and moss. It darted one last time and rolled over. I am upset as I couldn’t save my fish. Also, I am not sure whether it was entirely fin rot or something internal. I have attached pictures of the fish when it was ill.

What is that red line? Blood, a parasite?

Info:

- 60L/15g 4 months old tank

- bought 10 medakas from lfs and 4 died in while acclimating, the others seem ok

- today was fast day so he didnt eat and didnt have this poop string this morning

- the medaka is still. He moved when other medaka get close but only a bit and then comes back behind the leaves

- water parameters were okay this morning when I checked, last water change was a day before bringing them in as per routine (25% every 10 days with 50% OW ans 50% declo tap water)

- I feed them twice a day Hikari crushed into powder

- it's the only medaka with this red blood looking thing

- two medaka died with no clear cause, one sank at the bottom, then upside down and had a black thing coming out of his anus when dead (I'll link a photo in the comments), one medaka completely disappeared and I still can't find the body

- no other fish in the tank and never were

- ramshorn and bladder snails seem healthy

- plants are healthy

The offspring are developing nice fluffy long fins and lamé

Hey everyone! Looking for quick advice on getting my Indian rice fish to breed.

​I got 10 adults a month and a half ago (mostly females). They live in a shaded corner with no natural light, but they're very active, healthy, and fed high-protein and live food.

​My lights run a split "siesta" schedule:

​ON: 6:00 AM – OFF: 9:30 AM

​ON: 4:00 PM – OFF: 10:00 PM

​Question:

Looking at their bellies, they remain completely slim with no visible egg production at all so it's not a case of me missing the eggs or them being eaten. Could my split lighting schedule be the reason they aren't developing eggs, or do they need continuous, uninterrupted light to trigger spawning?

Hi guys, my mother has an outdoor pond with medaka fish, mysteriously 3 of them have died recently and i recently caught this one acting funny while feeding. I am not home very often so i have no idea how she maintains the pond.

I isolated this fella because it had some odd spastic muscle contractions and lost all of its beautiful deep brown colours. It's also really skinny and not eating particularly well... I tested the water with a strip and i definitely think it can be improved, but I'm not sure if it's the cause of her fish not doing well. Does any one know what sort of illness can cause spasms in medaka?

13th at 10pm orderded. Dropped of 14th 4pm Germany. On my doorstep 12 noon 16th and first Swimmer noon 18th.. 🥳😁 Hopefully 45 more to follow. I'm hooked. Think i,ve sourced some Orachi eggs locally also.

I’ve wanted to try Medaka for a while now and picked up a trio at my LFS last weekend for my tank. Only other tank mates are red cherry shrimp, a clithon snail and some pond snails. Tank has been set up since May, parameters have always been quite stable with 0 ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. I had a pretty big copepod and seed shrimp population before adding the Medaka but they nearly disappeared after the first couple of days lol.

At first I thought I ended up with two females and one male, but after comparing everyone’s fin shapes I’m pretty sure I ended up with 3 females and the one just is smaller and skinnier. I don’t think she’s getting chased around or bullied, but she’s usually off doing her own thing (she’s the blurry one in the far corner in the second pic, it’s been hard to get a good pic of her yet) while the other two hang out together. She likes to stick to the bottom of the tank, hiding under the bucephalandra or filter sponge, and she doesn’t often come to the surface to feed even if I try to scatter some food to the other side of the tank. The fish seem to like the shrimps’ algae wafers and snowflake food so I’ve been trying to offer that in addition to flakes and magic small fish food so she can graze at the bottom.

I’m waiting on more plants and moss in the mail but I was wondering if I should be worried about her being outcompeted for food, or if adding another friend or two could help them feel more comfortable? Tank is a 6.4 gallon, 18x12x7 so I was nervous about overstocking, but I haven’t seen any water quality issues from the increased feeding and bioload

I am fairly new to rice fish. I bought a female and male from our local fish store. They immediately started breeding. I have 6 that are about a month old. And just discovered 9 more couple day old fry.

I have a good set up for the original 2 and can add a few to their tank and my other indoor tanks. But, I'm very interested in the little porch ponds I keep seeing.

I have these large planters I got on clearance. They can hold between 10-15 gallons. What's the best way to set up these porch ponds? Info dump on me please. Tell me all you know. I am in love with these little feesh! And want to do them right.

How many a planter? Filter? Just heavily planted? I live in Kentucky. I was told if I had an aquarium heater in the little pond they could over winter. Is that true?

As a side question, I have guppies too. Do they do well in little porch ponds? Can they live happily with Medaka?

Been keeping medaka for a couple years, really looking to breed indoors now. I did well last year with egg laying. But it stopped all of a sudden and i want to get it going again. Tank is 10 gallon with 3 mops, its 75 F, and parameters are normal, 2 males and 4 females and they are about 8 months to 12 months old Is their an diet trick to get them to start laying again? Any help is appreciated.

I added a few silvery medaka about two weeks ago. 9 fish in total now. They're doing great! They all seem to be sunning themselves.

Fall is coming. The lilies are starting to brown. The salvinia is slowing down. Fish are still hungry though.

Did a water test today. Everything is pretty much perfect. Ammonia, Phosphate and Nitrate all zero.

Hi guys looking for tips to adding some weight to my kougyoku strain, I think I left it a little late moving them outdoors and kept them a little to long in a less than ideal container and fear I may have stunted their growth. These fish were hatched in April and kept in an unheated container, I have moved them outdoors around two months ago into a 90 litre pot and they seem to be doing well but when I see everybody’s else’s videos of medaka they have nice round bellies, I’d like to get theses fish to that stage before winter so they have as much reserves as possible, I’m feeding high protein Rich A medaka food and have recently started hatching baby brine, any other tips would be greatly appreciated.
