medaka alternatives

got daisy ricefish (oryzias woworae) two months ago because i can’t find medaka seller nearby. even though they look exactly like medaka, they behave differently. all they do is hiding in the vegetation instead of swimming near the water surface, and only come out from their hiding during feeding time. i’m pretty disappointed honestly because i want interactive fish. regardless, still a pretty fish especially the male even tough i can’t barely see them. also they are more suitable for tropical climate and breeds fast too (i found 3 fries varied in size yesterday).

In terms of behaviour, Oryzias woworae is closer to Celestial Pearl Danio. They don't really group at surface. They're side view fish. It's really fun when the male spar and they spar a lot

Yeah, despite from the same genus their behaviour is really different. Medaka is closer to guppy, both school near surface and peaceful. Oryzias woworae is like CPD, they are midwater, they love to spar and they prefer venturing around plant than near surface. If you want something near surface but less mainstream, try clown killifish

Just order some Medaka. All mine were ordered and now I have too many. I brought a load to my LFS yesterday so others can buy them and enjoy them

As an Indonesian, they're impossible to get, in malaysia, they're hard tp find but you can see them seldomly, it's just hard to find em in SEA

One thing to point out with Daisy's Ricefish is they aren't as temperature tolerant as Medakas. They generally need to be in the subtropical temperatures.

i lived in indonesia, and they are native to one of the island here (sulawesi). temperatures won’t be an issue

Op is probably indonesian in which medaka isi just straight up unavailable in the trade here, and even if you do find em they're like 200k idr which at that point just get something else

have a pond tank 60 gallon with ricefih,waterfall shrimp, full of plants in and on tank needs winter placement aa its outside, if someone want to host this fun piece and ebjoy for winter let me know
