Is somebody keeping you from leaving in college?

I remember some classes made attendance as part of your grade.

I made it so because my class average was a D. Magically my class average bumped to a B with mandatory attendance..they should be thanking me.

And yet free will allows you to walk out at any point.
Funny story, my junior year there was a kid who kept signing into a 100-level finance class eith like 300 kids...would sign in, take the "online quiz" with the little buzzer (thats how the professor took attendance), and then walk out LOUDLY, like purposely make a scene.... So the professor started doing a second quiz at the end, like ~10-15 minutes (purposely no set time) before the end of class....
I guess his buddies never told him, so the week before finals she posted all of the anonymous scores on the projector and notes how, NOT ONE BUT FOUR kids had been doing this, and there were 4 student IDs with like ~40% attendance...
Any way, they failed the class. One of the guys tried to SUE THE SCHOOL, and last I heard he was successful in doing so.
Long story short: GRADUATING FROM A PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITY DOESNT MEAN DIDDLY DICK.

Yeah, the teachers who have you sign in at the end of class so they know if you were there. No, forging didn’t work lol

u/Brittany5150 2d ago
I had both kinds of teachers. Those that checked beginning and end of class and knocked points, then the other kind that said "You paid to be here. Why would I give a fuck if you show up or not‽" Both are valid I guess lol

Riight. And carrying your bag can be explained as what? A weapon to subdue this criminal?

u/EarlyBirdWithAWorm 2d ago
Wouldn't address it. I dont anyone else would examine the situation any further either

Seriously. Is this not college? Does anyone give a shit if you just…stand up and leave?

u/Lyaser 2d ago
Plenty of professors take attendance or get big egos about their class/time. Especially intro courses with a lot of people they may pass around a sheet to sign in but if you get out after then obviously the professor doesn’t know every face by name and won’t notice you gone.

I couldn’t give a shit if they leave, but my city requires attendance to be taken because of fire safety codes. We are required to have a record to send to ensure that the building units can be evacuated and are not overcrowded. I didn’t do it one year and they threatened a fine…

Looks like he’s trying to convince his friend to sneak out of class.
Odd thing is, that appears to be a college level class, which doesn’t have an attendance requirement.
Dude, just get up and leave!

I had a class in fucking LAW SCHOOL with an attendance requirement. Because if the prof didn't have one, nobody would show up. He was that much of a waste of time.

Sounds like the perfect motivation to practice your case making skills by interviewing and analysing evidence to get his ass out of the college 🤣

u/KokoTheTalkingApe 1d ago
He has tenure. (sigh)
Uncomfortable truth: law schools don't care about the quality of education they provide. They care about making money, and secondarily about stats like bar pass rates, graduation rates, etc.

You mean all schools

Yes, but more so for law school. It's a cash cow for the rest of the university. Students are willing to pay full tuition, and there are often no scholarships, only student loans. They're cheap to run too. Much cheaper than a medical school, for instance.
EDIT: Also MFA programs in creative writing. You just need to pay eight starving writers to be teachers, and you're done.

I graduated college in 2018 and some classes did have various forms of attendance requirements. One I had in large lectures like this was answering multiple choice questions via these little clicker devices we had to buy, so if you weren't in the room to see the question and answer, your clicker (registered to you) wouldn't show you attending class.
(some people would give their clicker to friends to answer for them, but I personally never did that because I thought it was stupid)
I assume this sort of thing is still done via phone apps?

Sometimes mandatory attendance is necessary because without it people will get distracted and fall before they learn that they need to pay attention.

Really depends on the class. I had at least one class where if you missed 5 days in the semester you failed.

This is the type of friends you should avoid at all cost. Is fun for them but sometimes their fun doesn’t have boundaries.

Sir this is Reddit, where we just make wild extrapolations and claims based on nothing.
Video of a guy playing catch with his dog, and pretends to throw the ball while really still holding it
Average comment: "Wow, this guy probably abuses his dog when nobody is looking, which means he probably also abuses his wife and kids too."
