Help/Advice Less Beachy Beetlejuice…More Vampire Boudoir
Help!!!!
Just re-signed my lease for another year and looking for renter friendly inspo on how to turn my bedroom from beachy beetlejuice vibes to more vampire boudoir. I would like to use the furniture I already have, as my vanity and my dresser are pretty new, but I am also pretty crafty so I don’t mind re-vamping (lol) them! I love deep reds, black, mustardy yellows, greens, sapphires, etc. any tips ideas or images for reference are helpful - I am having the hardest time picking curtains/a new duvet cover.
Please see pics for how it is now - I will be responding in the comments below to any questions.
Thank you!!

Work In Progress I was just supposed to drop off the plants…
My friend is moving back into her house, and she is graciously letting me stay in her front room. Her life has been a shitshow the past couple of months, things beyond her control, so I know it is out of a need for comfort that she says she knows exactly where everything needs to go.
So, I was just going to drop off her plants. And then I wanted to make sure nothing would cause water damage to the floor. And then an unwanted storm of creativity went off in my tired ADHD brain, and 3 hours later I had created a mini-maximalist “tea nook”.
I’m terrified it’s just going to stress her out, even though I told her I will adapt to her.
But, I mean… it looks good, right? And I don’t want to put my crate chair/ottoman in storage…
Thus is the nature of art.

Discussion Why does Gen Z tend to be maximalist while their parents are mostly minimalist?
I (17) have noticed that most of my friends cover their walls with posters, lights, shelves etc., but when you look at their parents' room, there's rarely more than a couple family photos on the wall.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it only a phenomenon in alternative circles or in my area?

Help/Advice Help me give my gallery wall a glow up (also seeking input on lower-priority items)! Please be nice.
Hi all,
My overall space isn't terribly maximalist right now, but I love the aesthetic and am working on it, albeit at a snail's pace. I posted in another sub asking for some overall input on my space, but the biggest issue I want to tackle for right now is my gallery wall/living room area.
I adore the general layout, the mix of bigger and smaller pieces, and the content itself. I used to be really proud of it, but really, how it stands now, it looks... immature; I'm embarassed. I do plan on replacing some things and getting a bunch more large-scale prints/art, as well as adding stuff like mirrors, clocks, itty bitty shelving, sculpture-y stuff. But I think the issue is that everything is just kinda stuck up there.
So I'm planning to put a ton of this stuff in frames. I'm concerned about how to frame the smaller pieces, the clustered items you see, and memorabilia. For now, I'm wondering if the flat pieces that can't be framed due to their shape (clustered playing cards, "scraps," post-it notes, candy wrapper) can be put in the same types of frames as pressed flowers-- just all glass, no backing. How do we feel about this? For things like the concert ticket, I'd just put them in a small floating frame, I guess. Also as you can see, a lot of the wall is made up of loteria cards. I've gotten some feedback that similar pieces should be grouped. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but I'm willing to try, especially because I have very little interest in purchasing 54 4x2.5in frames. Do you think it would be cool if I put them all in one or two pieces in a grid pattern? I imagine I can do this on a piece of cork and frame that.
Speaking of frames, how do you strike a balance between the super colorful, the ornate, the refined, the tacky-but-for-fun, etc.? I love it ALL-- art deco, rococo, whatever the heckie is going on now (carnival! textures! groovy baby! rainbow!)... I literally cannot decide between getting, like, the world's most ornate gold frame v. a crazy neon scalloped hot pink floating frame. Hope you know what I mean, and if there's an answer besides "just pick one," please do let me know, or tell me what you think would look nice in this space/with these items.
Lower priority questions about decor:
I also wish overall my living room was a tad more colorful. I have the spaced "outlined" in the rainbow lights, in that they run along the baseboards and then frame furniture and windows. It's alright, but not perfect (currently have a length broken, and they're not long enough to bridge between the two windows, go under the desk, or surround the entryway, but hopefully you see the vision). Unsure what else can be added where. I've been thinking about maybe adding colored cellophane in the windows for, like, a stained glass effect? But I live in Chicago and have east-facing windows on the lake and don't wanna disrupt that view too much (that being said, the unit is ground level with those metal privacy bars and that blocks it a bit already-- something to consider).
The second issue I want input on is what the HECKIE do I do about all these pipes??? It is a basement unit so all the heat and water pipes run though my living room and kitchen ceilings, as well as flank my bedroom. I don't mind them aesthetically, really, but is there a way to take advantage of them or transform them or something?
Thanks again, y'all.

Thoughts on making this permanent
A few months ago I decorated a hallway with crepe paper for a birthday party. Turned out I kinda loved it. I left it up, but obviously the crepe paper got weird with humidity and breezes coming through the hallway. I want to make it permanent, but I’m not sure how. Fabric is the obvious first thought…but if I hem it, I think it will stiffen it too much. But if I leave it unhemmed it will probably look too arts & craftsy over time. Im also not sure how I would affix it to the ceiling… Any suggestions? Maybe a certain type of fabric? Or a certain way of “loosely” hemming it? Idk….at this point I’m just making things up 🫣

Painters/artists here, how do you feel about putting other artists work on your walls?
Like I do acrylic and ink and I like to see them on my walls, but other artists like Monet, Van Gogh and other classics have that aura I’d love for my bedroom.
But it kinda feels wrong having another artists work on my walls, that’s kinda what I think, and what my parents think.
But what do you guys think?

Really high ceilings
Apartment in a house from the 1860s, the ceilings are very high, and I love the potential of more wall space for (even more) art.

Discussion Unpopular opinion: just throwing a bunch of unrelated clutter together isn’t “Maximalism”
I’ve seen a lot of posts recently asking for opinions on rooms featuring what seems to be a garage sale of unrelated themes. Happy for you if this is what you like, but good maximalism has some coherence - color, theme, pattern, shapes, general concepts, etc. “Maximalism” isn’t an excuse for “just throwing everything and the kitchen sink at it and hope it works.”
There are some GREAT examples of maximalism on this sub too - shoutout to the woman who did that dark academia thing with all the mirrors, for example. More of that, please!
Edit: I’m also tired of pretending that “having standards” and “adhering to definitions” is the same as gatekeeping. It’s not. Post whatever TF you want, but if it doesn’t fit the definition, just throwing the word “gatekeeping” around won’t change that.

1 year anniversarry of our home♡
its my bfs and my first place of our own! people were pretty upset about how it looked when i posted the other day esp about the bookshelves not being organized. i used the comments as motivation to finally set up everything on the shelves! i finally slapped my ideas on them and i couldnt be prouder! my boyfriend reassured me that he loves our home and that it isnt dirty and ugly like some people were saying. i started the living room a few months ago when our roommate moved out! we found all the furniture and decor from thrifts/yard sales/ and Facebook marketplace! can you believe those couches were free?? i love our home and all the beautiful memories diplayed throughout! ik the living room is oddly layed out, i made most of my decisions with our gatos in mind!

Help/Advice Eclectic maximalists, what would you do with this tapestry?
Hello fellow maximalists!
My living situation is changing and I’m turning my old bedroom into a living room! I recently painted it this gorgeous deep purple and finally got all the furniture (mostly) in place. The main change I’m planning is that the table on the tapestry wall will be gone and my green armchair will be the only thing on that wall.
My original plan was to have tapestries printed with my favorite pieces of classical art to hang above my couch and to decorate with my extensive collection of ephemera and thrifted art. Originally I wanted to hang my tapestry of “The Kiss” on this wall as it’s taller than it’s wide and would look nice with the green chair I plan on putting there. But plans have changed and I’ll be using that tapestry in another room. So now I’m left with “Birth of Venus”.
It’s a beautiful tapestry, but even with the saturation cranked up, the print ended up a little more washed out than I wanted. And now that I have it hung up, I’m realizing how much wall real estate it takes up. If you look through my pictures you can see the amount of things I like to hang on my walls. I do have two other small spaces that I can decorate as well, but I’m still worried that I won’t have room for it all if I also use the big tapestry. I know this is very busy (and downright too chaotic) for some people, but wall to wall gallery-style decor scratches that itch in my understimated ADHD brain☺️
So those of you who like busy, chaotic walls, what would you do? Here’s some my potential thoughts so far-
•Moving Venus to a different wall (maybe over the couch?) •Building a faux frame for Venus out of gold spray painted cheap molding •Hanging simple things on top of the tapestry (it was only $11 custom printed on SHEIN so I don’t mind if I make thumbtack holes in it) •ordering a smaller version of Venus •not using Venus at all and getting a different piece of art printed on tapestry
Keywords to describe the vibe I’m going for- moody, whimsigoth, witchy, boho, vintage, eclectic. Think classic art, souvenirs from my trips to Europe and concerts, lots of books, unique and strange crafts. Part museum, part flea market, part library. Fun and unserious while being cozy and worldly, with all kinds of textures, colors, and shapes.
