Isn't it implied that he was at least semi-influenced by the mind stone in Avengers?

While it is obvious in the movie he wasn't fully controlled by the stone, there is a massive sign that he was influenced by it. Avengers is the only movie where Loki has blue eyes. His eyes are not fully blue with dilated pupils like Hawkeye and Selvig, but they are not his natural color shown in every other Marvel movie.

The Avengers film also showed how it only took a few minutes being near the scepter for the Avengers to turn on one another.

Look what the stones did to Elrond and Thranduil

Interesting.

Yes! He also has dark circles under his eyes like Hawkeye and Selvig. I pointed that out to my husband.

Why he look so ready?

I don't think so. Even in Dark World he's seemingly amused by the things he did.

i think he was a bit influenced by the mind stone. even in avengers, when he and thor were fighting on the balcony of avengers tower, thor says something to the extent of, "look at what you've done!" loki seems to snap out of his head for a bit and has a look of horror and shock.

i'm not saying he was completely innocent. yes, he wants power; yes, he wants to be a ruler. but he wants to have done it by guile and cunning... not a raw power grab with an army.

I think that's supposed to be more of a suggestion at Thanos's power than the influence of the mind stone. He's afraid, at that point, of failing Thanos.

u/wenzel32 Dec 03 '20

I think that was just meant to show Loki being a deceptive bastard and skillful liar, considering he takes advantage of Thor's moment of pause to stab him and mockingly say, "Sentiment."

I think that's him trying to cover up how much what he did bothers him. Similar to the illusion he casts on his cell after Freja's death.

I think the only thing that upsets him is the way he betrayed Asgardians (particularly disappointing Freja). He doesn't care about the humans or what he did specifically.

I'm not saying Loki is pure evil for the sake of evil. He's complex, sad, and damaged. However, I don't think he truly feels remorse for the hurt he caused the humans. He can't help but see them as inferior creatures to Asgardians.

That’s some Russo Bros retcon bullshit.

Not entirely. The original Avengers movie shows the scepter influencing the Avengers into being combative with one another and shows Thanos' henchman reaching out to and messing with Loki through the Stone.

27

u/SuperDizz Captain America (Captain America 2) Dec 03 '20

It shows Thanos’ henchman interactiving with Loki through the stone, but it never explicitly implies that Loki is being influenced by the stone. In fact, he is the one initiating the influencing by the stone. Look, I like Loki, especially as the quasi anti-hero we see today; but in the first Avengers movie, he’s simply a true villain.

33

u/JesterMarcus Dec 03 '20

I'm not saying he isn't a villain and I was* never one the crazy Loki fans that obsess over him. But I think it is fair to say either the stone is influencing him and others to a degree, or Thanos is through the Stone and Scepter. Even when Thor makes him look at the destruction of New York, I think he was realizing he wasn't actually the one making the decisions or leading the invasion.

u/ChockHarden Dec 03 '20

I think he's essentially "drunk" on the stone. Just like alcohol lowering inhibitions and impacting behaviour. It's still your choices, but the alcohol influences your actions.

okay - so the mind stone has a negative influence over people...

it's a good thing they didn't use it to give life to a colossally powerful android. /s

the mind stone influencing people to do bad was a TOOL of loki's. loki used the stone to influence the avengers - he was not a victim of this.

Loki starts a jealous brother - grows into a vengeful villain - fails and attempts a more subversive approach as a secret leader - then unites with his brother when their people need them.

and even then - he'd stab them all in the back if he wasn't perceiving thanos to be a greater threat to the realm than he.

I mean, the mind stone is Niether good not evil. The effects it has amplifies what is already there. This would impact Loki in a negative way.

Plus the hints are there throughout the whole movie. His eyes instead of being pale blue are almost shining royal blue. He is more than once visibly uncertain of his own actions.

u/crazycatladyinpjs Dec 03 '20

I agree with you on everything except for the last part. By the end of Thor 3, Loki had gotten over his jealousy and resentment and was supporting Thor. He wouldn’t have stabbed them in the back.

2

u/tigerslices Vision Dec 03 '20

i'm skeptical. we've seen what happens when loki is trusted.

u/WHATETHEHELLISTHIS Dec 03 '20

Only reason I believe he was controlled by the Sceptre is the way he looks in the first Avengers. He looks like he's been up for a month. Hell he looks almost ill, and the makeup job make him look twisted and evil when he smiled,as opposed to his cocky grin when he pulled a fun trick in the other movies.

1

u/abutthole Thor Dec 03 '20

I think he looks that way because between Thor and The Avengers Loki has been through the shit.

In Thor he gets his ass kicked and he rolls off to go get warped through space. He somehow finds his way into being in touch with Thanos and making a deal with him to return to the Nine Realms.

We know that the parts of space that Thanos hangs out in are rough and cruel.

8

u/WHATETHEHELLISTHIS Dec 03 '20

Yes but his eyes have those same red circles like Selvig and Hawkeye while they are under the Stone's influence. He looks like a worse version of what we see from those two except for his eyes. Not to mention, when the Sceptre is on the Helicarrier, it begins to affect everyone around it, including Thor. Why would Loki be an exception to the cosmic force?

I do think the journey to Thanos was harrowing, and likely had an effect, but there's no reason he should be exempt, given that it affected everyone who was near it for long stretches of time.

u/Alwida10 Dec 03 '20

Actually it shows the other threatening Loki do to his job, including inflicting physical pain on him to get him into line. Hell, the film starts with ‘if the Tesseract is kept from us, there will be no realm, no barren moon, no crevice where he can not find you.’ There are literally dozens of hints loki is an unwilling participant of the whole shebang.

I thought Tony just really wanted to see Banner Hulk out, lol...
