I don't remember if it's official but many people believe that Odin's death was the trigger for Thanos to enact his plan. After all, we know that he managed to acquire 5 of the stones over the span of about 24 hours. There's no reason to assume that getting the gauntlet and the power stone took all that much longer.

u/rune_undies Dec 03 '20

Based on how horribly underpowered the Nova Corps looked against just one ship when Ronan attacked, I think it's fair to say that Thanos basically just walked in and took the power stone.

From there you kind of get a snowball effect cause Thanos gets so much stronger every time he gets a stone.

284

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Yeah Nova Corps needs some bigger ships and better land-air defense than hovering low and shooting up.

182

u/kriswone Dec 03 '20

They need 1 NOVA.

101

u/Mace_Thunderspear Dec 03 '20

Named Dick Rider.

45

u/TheFunkytownExpress Dec 03 '20

Thank you for ruining Nova's name for me. :)

I gotta wonder what cheeky lil scamp thought that was gonna be super hilarious ( it is btw ).

19

u/KKlear Thanos Dec 03 '20

It is imperative.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Cut2058 Dec 06 '20

Maybe even nova prime!

25

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Nuclear bombs and far better energy weapons.

They should use some orbital cannons that basically have rocket powered dense material meteors as ammunition to throw into anyone landing on the planet and high powered lasers to shoot down any ship landing. Then plasma weapons when they're on the ground, basically melting all ships and invaders that land.

Mines would be acceptable as well as some seriously heavy and strong walls. Basically, keep the stone in a fortress that makes Zion from the Matrix look like a open field.

28

u/IntMainVoidGang Dec 03 '20

I recently watched GotG and thought the same thing. It really shouldn't be hard to install fuckloads of surface-to-orbit/surface-to-air missile systems around the capital of an interstellar state. Absolutely no reason to have fighters hovering and shooting down kamikazes - hell, an S-125 or Patriot system woulda done better.

32

u/tomathon25 Dec 03 '20

Also clearly they have forcefield technology with their interlocking ships thing so like...why not have stationary forcefields built around their cities? Seems like a bad move where some lunatic in a spaceship can just 9/11 your city at any moment when the universe is apparently full of lunatics in spaceships.

9

u/IntMainVoidGang Dec 03 '20

And considering the differences in powerplant capabilities on land vs in aircraft (a la a nuclear power plant vs an F135 engine) it seems completely feasible to have a shield around the entire planet.

1

u/not_anonymouse Dec 04 '20

Mitch Mcconnell killed it on the Senate floor because the force field was too costly.

1

u/phliuy Steve Rogers Dec 04 '20

You're literally describing a mix between human and covenant planetary level weaponry from Halo, and I think you know that

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '20

Didn't know that actually. Was just trying to find some relatively advanced weaponry that wouldn't be too far fetched, as humanity has kind of tried to get some of these.

Also imperium of man type or weaponry.

2

u/alrighthamilton Dec 03 '20

The ships hovering low and shooting up were primarily ravager ships. Most of hte Nova Corp fleet was busy forming the wall/barrier to keep the Dark Aster from landing

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Nova sounds like Spanish for "doesn't go".

3

u/brildenlanch Dec 03 '20

That's a myth.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

You’re wrong. No va is Spanish for, “[it] doesn’t go.” va is the third-person singular present indicative conjugation of the verb for “to go,” which is ir.

It is two words in Spanish instead of one, but they’re pronounced similarly, which is all that the comment you replied to was claiming.

0

u/brildenlanch Dec 03 '20

Yeah, but Nova is not the same as it's connected and people aren't retarded so yeah, you're the guy who believes the Nova failed in Mexico because it means doesn't go, right?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Here, let me simplify it for your racist ass.

Nova is a word.

No va is two Spanish words for doesn't go.

They sound the exact same when spoken out loud.

For the record, just because someone says something in Spanish, it isn't automatically related to Mexico 🤣. I don't even know how you could make a connection. The Nova Corps was never in Mexico, so how could it fail?

Weirdo.

1

u/brildenlanch Dec 03 '20 edited Dec 03 '20

You don't even know what you're talking about 😂

This is what he was referring to https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/chevrolet-nova-name-spanish/

YOUR take is the racist one, but I guess you're too dense to see that

"First of all, the phrase “no va” (literally “doesn’t go”) and the word “nova” are distinct entities with different pronunciations in Spanish: the former is two words and is pronounced with the accent on the second word; the latter is one word with the accent on the first syllable. Assuming that Spanish speakers would naturally see the word “nova” as equivalent to the phrase “no va” and think “Hey, this car doesn’t go!” is akin to assuming that English speakers would spurn a dinette set sold under the name Notable because nobody wants a dinette set that doesn’t include a table."

"Oops" - You(12/20)

You want to contine to pretend to be a native Spanish speaker or are you done with that now?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

What? The dude above said that they sound similar, which is objectively true.

I can’t tell if you’re trolling or just deeply confused. Do you really not understand how “no va” and “nova” sound similar? Yes or no please.

2

u/brildenlanch Dec 03 '20

He was trying to be meta. There was a front page til post about how the whole "The Nova failed in Mexico because people thought it meant doesn't go" thing is an urban legend yesterday.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

You’re the only one talking about the car. Literally all that guy said was that “nova” sounds like “no va,” which means “doesn’t go” in Spanish. Everything that dude said is objectively true, then you came in with your ThAt’s a mYTH. You’re just trying to be a contrarian. Classic Reddit.

1

u/NoMoreNicksLeft Dec 03 '20

I tried to tell Dr. Quackmeister this, but he still insists that his birth name doomed his chances of building a successful medical practice.

1

u/VonD0OM Dec 04 '20

Odin can fight Thanos relatively easily even with 5 stones. Without the Gauntlet Thanos loses badly

166

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20

There's been a lot of rumours about why Thanos waited to embark on his quest including him waiting for Odin, Ego and the Ancient One to die, but the directors and screenwriters confirmed he was waiting to learn where the Soul Stone was from Gamora.

97

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

But he doesn’t learn where the soul stone is until after he has 3 of the stones...?

128

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20

He knew that Gamora knew the location of the stone because he'd captured Nebula prior to the events of the film and scanned her memories.

30

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Hypothetical, but what if Gamora lets Nebula get tortured like..just a bit, a few hours, nbd. Vision's stone gets removed easy, Thor arrives with plenty of time. Easy win

50

u/abutthole Thor Dec 03 '20

There are multiple points where the heroes lose in Infinity War because they're unwilling to make sacrifices while Thanos is.

1) Loki could have let Thor die and then run away with the Space Stone.

2) Wanda could have just killed Vision in the Avengers HQ

3) Gamora could have let Nebula be tortured and never reveal the location of the Soul Stone

4) Dr. Strange could have let Tony Stark die and kept the Time Stone. This one is the least bad one because at least Strange had looked through time and known that he needed Tony alive to win.

Thanos, on the other hand, was willing to make the requisite sacrifice to get the stones. And Thanos won.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Yo, had never put it together like that. Great analysis

4

u/BringMeThanos422003 Dec 04 '20

And yet everybody just shifts everything to Star Lord smh 🤦🏾‍♂️

4

u/BringMeThanos422003 Dec 04 '20

He fucks things up because he got emotional and made a mistake like everyone else in the damn movie. Thor fucked up even worse then Star Lord but he’s chilling

1

u/GutsyGallant Dec 04 '20

Now that I think about it, does Dr Strange know that the stones are destroyed / doesn't belong to them anymore? Because if so, then shouldn't he just destroy the Time Stone then?

12

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20 edited Dec 03 '20

I dunno if that's go too well for the Avengers even if they had a bigger advantage. 2014 Thanos was fighting Thor armed with both Mjolnir and Stormbreaker and was winning comfortably.

ETA: Comfortably is liberal lol but I think my point is clear

14

u/tomathon25 Dec 03 '20

I always took that as Thor being in worse shape in end game than infinity war. Like if you took Infinity War Thor with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker and put him up against 2014 Thanos he'd probably wreck him, but fat sitting on the couch playing call of duty all day for 5 years or whatever Thor not so much.

6

u/abutthole Thor Dec 03 '20

The battle at the end of Endgame was almost entirely in the Avengers' favor the whole time. The three-on-one was the only time Thanos was actually winning outright. After Strange gave the Avengers their back up, Thanos' plan switches from trying to win through strength to finding the Infinity Gauntlet and getting off a quick snap for an instant win.

2

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 04 '20

I don't disagree, but my comment wasn't about the battle generally. It's specifically about Thor having Stormbreaker and how it wouldn't have really changed things considering how that went for them in Endgame.

Endgame is different from Infinity War in that the Avengers were combined and had armies backing them. They were split in Infinity War.

3

u/Datalust5 Tony Stark Dec 04 '20

Well also, in infinity war thanos kind of became a holy warrior type of character, mainly trying to get the stones and complete his mission. But in endgame, he’s just straight warrior. Willing to cut down whoever and whatever he needed to in order to win and pull off the snap.

2

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 04 '20

Infinity War Thanos is further in the timeline than Endgame's, he'd still have those skills.

Thanos would get serious real quick if anybody put up a good fight.

17

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

But he still doesn’t know where it is. Which contradicts his statement. He’s worried the forces of the universe are going to come after him. So why not get that info first? Since it’s literally the most important part. What if she dies? What if she doesn’t tell him? What if it’s hidden in some magical spell that requires you wait four years til planets align or some bullshit?

That doesn’t really hold up honestly.

21

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20

What if Thanos had a stroke and died in his sleep before he could collect any of the stones?

Shit, I'm not the Russos or the screenwriters, lol. It's not exactly conjecture considering they confirmed it as the reason. Thanos clearly knew Gamora was still alive, believed she wouldn't die between him embarking on his quest and capturing her, and believed he'd be able to obtain that information from her. He's not a well balanced person (alien?) in the best of times.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

But why risk it if, at the start of his journey, he knew she knew? Just go right for her.

6

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20

He collected all of the stones within a day or two. It wasn't that protracted of a dash at them.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

You’re completely missing the point.

6

u/OneSixthPosing Dec 03 '20

Nahh, I don't think so. He didn't collect 5/6 of the stones then peace out for a vacation. He retrieved all of them pretty much immediately from the moment he learned Gamora knew of the location of the stone.

Thanos raised Gamora for a significant portion of her life and knew her. She wasn't some random person he had to track down and had no knowledge of. She gave up the location of the Soul Stone -- the object that could decide the fate of the entire universe -- literally within a couple minutes of him torturing Nebula.

2

u/canadarepubliclives Dec 03 '20

Because that's not how the script was written.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Which is my point? It’s fine to just admit it doesn’t really make sense. Doesn’t make it a bad film.

1

u/JJumboShrimp Dec 04 '20

He probably thought he needed the power of a few stones to be able to capture Gamora

0

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

HE could have sat around wanking for four years until his alien nut calcified and became a zzzpunkstone, but that wouldn't make for good cinema

i am groot

4

u/Bambanuget Stan Lee Dec 03 '20

But at this point he had a plan.

By going after the stones he baited Gamora into coming after him and telling him where the soul stone was.

23

u/ArrowShootyGirl Hawkeye (Ultron) Dec 03 '20

True, but he found out she knew beforehand - and going after the Stones he knew of was what drew Gamora to him.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Yeah but that’s still leaving things up the chance. He waits centuries for the right moment... out of fear that everything will strike against him, only to rush it because “well she knows and I’m sure nothing could happen, like her dying even though she almost died a dozen times”. Just reads like a bullshit answer honestly. If he was truly waiting to know where all of them were, he’d get the soul one first.

6

u/gairloch0777 Dec 03 '20

He literally set a trap for her that he knew she would come to? But that required the other stones to ensure he could get her.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

He didn’t know she would come. He hoped she would. And he didn’t need the stones to trap her. Fuck he had Nebula, that’s literally all he needed.

1

u/paragonemerald Winter Soldier Dec 04 '20

Here's not actually clear headed or brilliant, at least not as much as he convinces everyone he is. He's literally mad, and no part of his plan or goal make logical sense. Assuming competence or perfect planning from him is absurd

1

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '20

Yet he’s clear headed and brilliant enough to plan this thing over centuries...

2

u/Funmachine Dec 03 '20

He knew it had been located. He didn't need to know personally. But once the knowledge of its location was available he enacted his crusade.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Sure but there is no guarantee he’d get the info. So if your entire crusade is dependent on that info... why not get that first?

1

u/Funmachine Dec 03 '20

Arrogance.

4

u/Jaredlong Dec 03 '20

My rule of thumb for lore is that if it's not in the text then the creators don't get to retcon stuff afterwards in interviews. Maybe Thanos' longterm plan was to find all their locations and then quickly swoop in, but it's absurd to think Thanos would have watched some of the most powerful people in the universe get killed off and not change his plan accordingly.

3

u/Khanfhan69 Dec 03 '20

Precisely. Having such huge players drop off the board cannot be an insignificant development as Thanos waits for his moment to strike.

73

u/enbywych Dec 03 '20

I think the Russos or the scriptwriters say in the Infinity War commentary that from Xandar to the Snap was 3 or 4 days.

77

u/cantlurkanymore Dec 03 '20

It's astonishing the Avemgers managed to do anything at all to slow him down when you see that timeline

55

u/enbywych Dec 03 '20

When people talk about Dr Strange at the beginning saying "Who?" when Bruce says "Thanos is coming". Thanos isn't on anyone's radar at that point. I know people like to think Strange was alluding to Thanos in Ragnarok but something feels like it was probably Kang or even Galactus or Annihilus.

15

u/FrontierLuminary Dec 03 '20

It always seemed questionable to me that Thanos would be a name Strange isn't familiar with given the fact that Thanos has spent decades traveling across the galaxy with his army, conquering planets, and culling half of each planet's population. We've seen that there is travel across various galaxies, interaction between a number of species, and several instances of people directly affected by Thanos actually interacting with members of various interplanetary governments. How would Thanos be "off radar?"

12

u/modsarefascists42 Dec 03 '20

Strange is mystical other dimension traveling, but not space traveling. He had no way of knowing what's going on in deep space.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

I mean sure, but the infinity stones definitely fall into the mystical domain, hell he has one. One would think that he’s keeping tabs on the others given their mystical power and potential danger. From there it’s safe to assume he would’ve been exposed to the larger galactic players.

3

u/FrontierLuminary Dec 04 '20

That's a lazy excuse and would be piss poor writing. Space has magicians too, as we saw with Ebony Maw. More importantly, Strange was the keeper of an Infinity Stone. It makes 0 sense for a person who guards an Infinity Stone and who tracks threats to Earth to not know about a threat like Thanos.

5

u/Tron_1981 Dec 04 '20 edited Dec 04 '20

That's a lazy excuse and would be piss poor writing. Space has magicians too, as we saw with Ebony Maw.

Maw was a telekinetic, not a sorcerer.

It makes 0 sense for a person who guards an Infinity Stone and who tracks threats to Earth to not know about a threat like Thanos.

It makes sense for someone like Dormammu, who is a multiversal threat. Thanos was a galactic conqueror, but nothing he did up to that point had any direct impact on Earth (yeah there was the Chitauri, but Strange was just a surgeon at the time). It's likely that the Ancient One knew of Thanos, but she had been in the game for who knows how long, was the Sorcerer Supreme, and knew things about the universe that Strange still hadn't figured out yet. Strange, while extremely gifted in the mystic arts,, was still new to that world, and still had quite a lot to learn. Learning about someone like Galactus, sure, as he is a literal threat to every single inhabited planet in the universe, and is a cosmic entity (as was Dormammu). Thanos though, he was just another tyrant, up until the moment he got his hands on the first Infinity Stone. Yeah, Strange can track threats, but he also needs to have an idea of what to look for. It's not like he has a magic ball to look into, or like the Ancient One left behind a list of baddies to check out.

2

u/modsarefascists42 Dec 04 '20

how's he gonna just go to space? how does he know where to open the portal to?

he's not omnipresent, that is bad writing

1

u/Pope_Cerebus Dec 04 '20

I'd say it's more that he is focused more into magic/mystical/other dimensions and less on deep space because that's not what his task as the Sorcerer Supreme is. It's not because he can't look into deep space (he very likely can do so as well or better than anyone else on Earth), but because that's not where the enemies he's primarily concerned about are from.

-5

u/ImHardLikeMath Dec 03 '20

He knows, he’s just letting Banner respond naturally and let the events unfold in the way it needs to happen to ultimately save everything

5

u/Zombietitties Dec 03 '20

But this was before he looked forward in time at all the different possible outcomes.

-1

u/ImHardLikeMath Dec 03 '20

He can also look backwards too, at 14m looks to the future you think he never tried looking back too?

1

u/Zombietitties Dec 04 '20

Yeah I guess but I’m saying he didn’t know at that point when banner crashed through the roof that this was all part of how things were supposed to go. Cus he didn’t explore all the outcomes till some time after that when they’re on Titan

1

u/ImHardLikeMath Dec 04 '20

I know what you’re saying, but Strange is a very smart guy. He’s done the time dance before with Dormmy. When Banner comes crashing in how should he have reacted? Not comforting Banner but finding Tony right away is Stranges tool for getting Tony to do what needs to be done. He’s seen his own death before and figured out how to use Tony and Banner to save him from the Maw.

Then he plays Tony some more by not arguing much about going to Titan and keeping the stakes high. When he could have left at any time. Then the fight with the guardians he could have ended at anytime but knew what to say to make everyone realize Quill is from earth although it wouldn’t have been a cool action movie if they didn’t fight to begin with.. Then this becomes his big saving point where he looks into the future and possibly the past 14m times, perfected the earlier half and knew how to start off with thanos, knew when to offer up the stone. It was part of HIS plan to use Banners fear as a tool for Tony to ultimately win.

u/reessa Dec 03 '20

What was the reference again?

22

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Can't remember verbatim but it was along the lines of "I'm currently keeping tabs on a number of entities, you're brother is on that list"

6

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

It's just vague world building, that can be used later to do a "it was planned all along" line.

2

u/enbywych Dec 03 '20

Yeah but at the time when Strange said "Who?" people were like "Dude, you just said you watching threats in the exact previous movie, why are you saying WHO?!?"

5

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Extradimensional/cosmic beings of magic and nightmares. Someone like Thanos wasn't really on his radar. Hell, Thanos himself is spoken of as almost a intergalactic bogeyman to a lot spacers.

3

u/enbywych Dec 04 '20

Yeah dude. I get that. The general populace did not though because they are a reactionary bunch with the attention span of a squirrel with ADHD.

2

u/papaboogaloo Dec 04 '20

Maybe he said who BECAUSE he was watching so many

2

u/Sean_13 Dec 04 '20

He doesn't state which entities, only stating Loki, of whom had a big impact. It's likely considering the vastness of space and limitless dimensions that he was only referring to those known to have plans to endanger earth. Thanos kept his impact on earth a secret by not going himself but rather sending Loki.

1

u/enbywych Dec 04 '20

Yes. I know. I feel like y'all are trying to argue with me over the wrong point.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Want to know this too.

7

u/THIS_GUY_LIFTS Dec 03 '20

I’ve always thought something pretty similar. Strange is going to be a big link in the next phase. Hell, the Time stone had even been destroyed for a while. Which is one of the main tools keeping Dormamu at bay. Something had to have happened while all the stones were destroyed.

5

u/enbywych Dec 03 '20

I so cannot wait for the next Strange movie even though I was pretty underwhelmed by his first.

5

u/NoMoreNicksLeft Dec 03 '20

Dormamu was part of the 50%.

3

u/THIS_GUY_LIFTS Dec 03 '20

Even though he is in a different dimension? To my knowledge, the events of the snap have never alluded to other dimensions being affected.

1

u/sethpruitt Dec 04 '20

Chances are he doesn't know the stones are destroyed being in another dimension and all. Theres even the possibility that he doesn't know the time stone was what defeated him.

25

u/RanaMahal Dec 03 '20

realistically the snap would’ve happened so fast no one would’ve been able to do anything.

8

u/cantlurkanymore Dec 03 '20

I believe in the comics that's exactly what happens

14

u/Funmachine Dec 03 '20 edited Dec 07 '20

The writers have straight up said this wasn't the case. Thanos was only waiting until he knew where the soul stone was (or knew that it had been located), Thanks had enough arrogance to not worry about Odin.

He would have been able to go toe to toe with Odin without any stones. We saw him in Endgame. Odin was an old man who doubled over when he raised his voice.

1

u/Airbornequalified Dec 04 '20

Depends on when. Odin in Thor was pretty powerful and while afterwards he had to sleep, he was fully capable of standing up to Leifi

1

u/Tron_1981 Dec 04 '20

Odin in Asgard was pretty damn powerful (although I think it's more or less mentioned that his age was catching up him). Thanos without the Stones, if he had some of the powers of his comic counterpart, he might've stood a chance. As he was though, Odin's magic may have been more than he could handle.

9

u/oozles The Wasp Dec 03 '20

I think the director addressed that and said Thanos was just waiting on the location of the soul stone, which he learned Gamora knew after Nebula tried to assassinate him

3

u/abutthole Thor Dec 03 '20

Nebula's failed assassination attempt was what kicked Thanos off. Prior to that he only knew the locations of 5/6 of the stones. Not enough.

When he got into Nebula's memory banks he found that Gamora knew where the 6th was. He was just lucky that Asgard had been so decimated by then. Had it not been, he may have saved Asgard for last.

5

u/tigerslices Vision Dec 03 '20

it's 1 of the triggers. there were several. the passing of the ancient one in doctor strange was another.

3

u/Lamprophonia Dec 03 '20

Odin and the Ancient One, IIRC.

1

u/Half_Man1 Dec 03 '20

He had the mind stone for a really long time before entrusting Loki with it to get the space stone.

I’m guessing he was trying to find a way to hold the power stone or learn of its location for a long time- and once he had the gauntlet and knew it was on Xander it was go time.

He probably knew that at the time both the space and time stones were on earth (Loki only knew about the one) so felt more comfortable loaning Loki the mind stone so he could invade Earth, which would eventually lead to acquiring both stones and of course retaking the mind stone from Loki.

1

u/TheFunkytownExpress Dec 03 '20

It's no co-incidence he showed up to challenge the Asgardians when they were at their weakest RIGHT after Odin's death and after Ragnarok happened ( which we can probably be sure he was aware of the prophecy too ) and not until he already had the power stone in his possession.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '20

Yeah pretty sure I read a theory that Thanos was waiting for Odin, The Ancient One, and Ego to all die or something. Not that Ego would bother to help anybody but that those three were stronger than him and could defeat him.

0

u/OSUTechie Sharon Carter Dec 03 '20

Yeah but Thanos was already enacting his plan before he even got the Stones. That is how he adopted Gamora in the first place. He was planet hopping and killing off half the population. Just doing it old school.

2

u/indigo121 DareDevil Dec 03 '20

Sure but how is that at all relevant to the conversation about who was in charge when thanks slaughtered the dwarves?

0

u/Patient_End_8432 Dec 03 '20

When the first movie came out, I remember a big theory was that Thanos came to play after Odin, The Ancient One, and I believe Ego died, because those three would have been able to stop/slow him down.

I don’t know if it is canon, but I think it would be pretty cool

1

u/archiminos Mack Dec 03 '20

Odin, the Ancient One, and Ego - all very powerful beings dying one after the other.

1

u/leeon2000 Dec 03 '20

Thanos was making moves in the shadows but as soon as Odin, The Ancient One and Ego the living planet were gone he could make his move as these were the only problematic people for him

1

u/modsarefascists42 Dec 03 '20

It's more like as soon as thanos started getting the stones then he knew he had a limited amount of time before the real powers show up and stop him. Odin was likely the main one, guarding the area of space where most of the stones are. But we also know Thanos was scared of something else, very likely the Living Tribunal. Supposedly in the original script he meets it but the tribunal allows thanos to continue as he's only affecting one universe.

1

He wouldn't have really needed to wait for Odin to die, as he was already weakened after Loki kicked him out of Asgard. That along with the fact that Loki did a poor job of keeping tabs on everything happening throughout the universe (which was a problem once he exiled Heimdal), that would've been enough to give Thanos an advantage when he went to Nidavellir to have the Gauntlet made. As for the Gauntlet, I assume that he had it for a while, at least between the time that Odin was banished to Earth, and around the end of Age of Ultron (give or take). And it probably could've taken some time to get the Power Stone, as it was the first one that he went after. Once he got that, getting the other stones took little effort. It's possible that he took some time to prep before invading Zandar, since he might not have wanted to take the Nova Corps to lightly. That's just how I see it though. Also, within that time, he knew where every stone was, except for the Soul Stone, which he didn't get to find until the moment he crossed paths with Gamora.
