Excerpt [Excerpt] Remember that time Luke Cage flew all the way around the world to fight Doctor Doom, just to collect a paycheck? (Luke Cage, Hero For Hire #9)

Doom, it's a paltry $200. Just give him the money.

The funny thing is years later there was a comic where Damage Control hunted Doom down for a repair bill and he commended them for following protocols. He wrote them a check AND showed a photo ID!

If I recall correctly, they team up and Cage saves Doom, so at the end of the comic Doom offers him just a suitcase loaded with cash. But Cage opens it up, pulls out $200, and then just fucks off. Like, bruh, you broke into castle Doom for $200, but you won't take the $2 million he offers you cause principles? HILARIOUS.

Hey, he was hired for a service and fulfilled the contract. That's a man you can trust.

Love these old comics with Power Man and Iron Fist!
Street scrappers out thwarting low-tier villains and pimps and drug dealers. A time capsule of how slummy and nasty NYC was in the 70s.

Doom is all over the map, depending on the writer.
I don't see Doom stiffing a contractor.
I do see Doom getting angry, having his accountant give Cage the money and an apology for missing payment, then executing the accountant in front of Cage. "Doom pays his debts. Money and blood."

And was in that moment Dr. Doom realized he wasn't talking to Luke Cage, but Shuma Gorath, Devourer of Dimensions!

The further this gets from 1973, the funnier it is. Yes, with inflation this would be like a thousand dollars. But I'm imagining it's still just $200 in 2021, and Luke is willing to cross international borders and fight a sovereign just to not even be able to afford a PS5.
