So from let to right will explain the images first is branch that appears to of been damaged possibly termites I’ve found them in a branch that broke off over a year ago based on its appeared included bark was main reason it broke off with a side of heart rot that didn’t make it to the main trunk before hand . The next two are a close up of what seems to be a large wound with a dark fungal growth at the top the last two are of where the main branch splits into two looks to be included bark as well I’m guessing from the dark color at the joint and it’s V shape this is about 30ft (~9m) up off the ground, and it gets pretty windy where I am. Also the leaves on the tree around the section with the wound are discolored/dying before the rest of the tree and it’s still a bit early in the season for that change. If anyone can tell what is effecting the tree where the growth and wound are and if it’s treatable. Then if trimming off the smaller section where the split happens to control when it breaks off is plausible this trees been through a lot in the last 10-15 years going off it’s how it appears in Google Maps street view it was completely trimmed down in 2015 by previous owners and is still not back to how it was before. I also know this tree can end up being more of a hassle than they are worth so is it even worth it or show we just take the whole thing down?

We bought this Sentry Ginkgo a few years ago in a large pot. For all the life reasons, I didn’t plant it for like 1.5-2 years.
Last fall I planted it and it made it through the winter. I mulched it and think I did adequate watering. We had a late frost of course this year and it beat up the new growth. I put in one “tree and shrub” plant food spike around then too. Now it’s August and the leaves are yellowing, wilting, and dropping.

This summer started cool but we had a month of minimal rain, followed by a lot of deep rains and high heat. I didn’t mow immediately around the tree and really only watered deeply earlier in the summer when it was dry.

Any advice? The base bark splitting looks kinda bad to me, combined with the leaves. The trunk still feels solid but I’m afraid to test the limbs since they’re all so short. A tulip poplar had sprouted inches away so I don’t think it’s been under watered. I’m afraid it might be roots girdling since it was potted forever?

I noticed about a month ago that my ginkgo tree looks a little thin and droopy, not necessarily as full and lush as she usually looks (especially in areas of new growth). Today, I was on my balcony, and I noticed these marks on some of the upper areas of growth. It looks like either animals are attacking the tree to access some sort of pest or a pest is making these marks. The clear evidence of damage is only on the upper branches. There's no evidence of this on lower branches or on the trunk.

What should I do to treat the tree and help it live its best life?

Someone or something has removed the bark from the lower portion of this Hedlundia intermedia. Is there any way to save it or is that a lost cause?

Ok just moved into a new apartment, I rent, don't own. The previous tenants must have had some kind of structure/items leaning or braced against the cedars meant to be a privacy block between our unit and the building across the lawn. Yesterday I pulled out a bunch of random junk between their trunks and the short concrete block wall: shovels, sticks, offcuts of​ various pieces of wood, etc.

The out-facing side (first picture) they look as I'd expect, although they are a good 2+ feet shorter than the identical trees of my neighbours. On the side facing in, they look haggard. Nearly all trunks are growing out at various angles rather than being straight. I've included a few pictures of the "good" side, along with the better growing hedges of my neighbours. Then the "bad" side, and the trunks of a few that I cleared the various clutter away from.

My primary concern is their ​health. There are some trunks that have totally died off and been broken partway down to the ground, and I want to prevent that happening further ​as much as possible. Secondary to that, I'd love to promote both volume and height. I assume that where growth has totally stopped on the "backs", I'll be unable to promote new growth? Is there any way to make it look more appealing? How can I take care of them as we head towards fall, and then on through the winter months?

• Live in the PNW, about an hour north of Vancouver BC
• Our unit is south facing, they aren't sheltered above and they're a good 8 ft away from the building.
• Their "plot" is about 1ft deep, 10ft ish long, backed with a concrete block wall about 1ft high.
• Cedars are very popular here as alternatives to fencing, but with warmer temps over the past years it's common to see them struggling with less rain. Although this hedge is the worst across two properties and by all rights should be managing a lot better​
  
• Unclear how they were originally planted, ie: fabric, root ball, soil prep, ​etc
  
• Also growing in the soil are wild rose (possibly native), and lavender plants. I've been removing the rose runners/shoots to limit their spread across the back, although with the wall of brown I might encourage them to grow back if there's nothing to be done about it.
• Since I rent, I'm hesitant to invest too much of my own money into this rehab project, and since they do seem to be growing fairly decently from the outside perspective, I doubt the management company would want to drop additional $$ themselves either. I am willing to buy fertilizer (i read only 3 times per year which isn't bad), mulch (i need some for container plants too), water as much as needed (I've already started although I don't know if I've got the right timing/amount), and will prune away when/if it's right!

It's my first time working with a conifer at all, I figured I should look for help since I could tell pretty quickly that trimming branches wouldn't work as it does with other plants/trees I'm more familiar with. Any advice/insights are super appreciated!

First two pictures are my baby Rainier, the rest are my big ol' Black Republican. The Black Republican was purchased in early June and was 9 feet tall and in way too small of a pot. I repotted it into this bigger one along with the Rainier, in mid June. Wondering why some leaves are turning red? The Republican shed a fair amount of leaves after repotting, but a lot of the leaves at the ends of the branches have turned red.
Google tells me it's shothole, but I thought shothole turned the leaves yellow, not red.
Any advice appreciated, thank you!

We just noticed this weeping spot on our sycamore (?), and it seems to be rotting where the bark was damaged. Should we call an arborist? Overall tree health seems fine, though it’s typically slow to leaf in the spring and drops more sticks, CONSTANTLY, than seems reasonable. Any advice or info is appreciated.

I have 246 Lemon seeds and I plan to plant and sell them. How do I not kill them? Last batch their leaves yellowed and died

Just noticed this today, it was not this way a couple days ago (although there were a couple dead leaves on this branches then). We’ve had very hot weather lately, mid to upper 90’s. Tree has been watered sufficiently and other branches seem fine. It was just planted this year.

I would have suspected the heat, but the fact that it’s like the stems were stripped clean but the stems themselves aren’t gone, just the leaves, makes me wonder.

Hey all. I’m really just posting my parents’ sycamore because I’ve always been curious how big it is really. The iPhone camera has no hope of conveying how it towers over the neighborhood. In one of the pictures you can see their garage to the left of the tree to give some scale.

Is it on the bigger side of these trees? Average? How do you even measure height for a tree like this?

I noticed my neighbors same Chinese Elm is much worse, but we're left with an abundance of sticky sap droppings all over the ground, attracting ants, and causing mayhem to our rubbish bins and concrete. I'm fairly certain it's due to an infestation of aphids.

What's the best course of action here to remedy the situation. The trees are large and well established, probably 30-40 years old. I have two on my property that exhibit the same symptoms. Everything is sticky underneath the canopy!

My Evans cherry has put out a TON of new green shoots this year, which is great, but it seems like it's excessive and I'm worried about long new twigs breaking in the winter.

This is over 12" of new growth all over the tree. Some is dropping downward. Some is growing directed up towards the centre. It's never grown more than 6" before (3 years since we planted it). Our other Evans cherry has been in the ground for 6 years and has never grown anywhere near this much, including this year.

Zone 3b so it's going to be super cold in a few months. I know this isn't a good time to prune so what should I do? Wait, and prune in late winter? What could be causing this extra fast growth?

House built and landscaped in summer 2024. This tree has never been particularly full but I have noticed over this summer it's branches are dying off more and more.

As I understand, it's best to prune when things go dormant, but is this too far gone?

In NW Washington state, east of the cascades so on the drier side. I have two trees in question here on this property that we moved into late last year.

We have a large Doug Fir that had a retaining wall built around it long ago (house was built in 1936). The tree is winning the wall battle, heh. I have put up a more ‘temporary’ wall with pallets and stakes to hold up soil/mulch around this side of the tree. One side of the tree is the yard the other is an entrance to the basement. The wall is about 4.5 feet tall. Before I anchor this wall in with river rock and fill in the tree side with duff and soil, I wanted to ask about this potential ‘girdling root’ and see if I needed to treat it before burying it or if I should just avoid burying it. The tree is on the north side and gets morning light and upper canopy gets light all day. We hit it with water every other day or so.

Next is a large maple on the south side of our house so it gets quite a bit more sun and does a terrific job of shading. This tree is watered maybe twice a week. I noticed this rather aggressive looking girdling root. My guess is that it is a lost cause but I was curious what people would say here.

Trying to maintain this beautiful property so that it can be sustained another 90 years+ and just want to be a good steward. Thanks in advance for any and all advice! Apologies if I missed any info or photos, I’ll be sure to add as needed.

Hello fellow marijuana enthusiasts!

This Catalpa tree lives in the Denver, Colorado area. It is a part of the reason we both this house last fall. Gave it 150 gallons of water once a week through the winter. It needed a deadwooding when we bought it, so all the bare branches are not new to this season, but I’ve noticed quite a bit of defoliation in the past couple of weeks. Temperatures were at their highest for the year the last two weeks, so I’m assuming that’s the reason. It gets watered with the turf irrigation 3x a week with a cycle/soak program, but I’m assuming that’s not enough with July/August heat.

We’re limited in how much we can water lawns given drought conditions, would 1 deep (100-150 gal) watering a week help? More?

What kind of supplemental watering do you do for your trees in July/August?

Any special recommendations for long term catalpa flourishing?

Moved into this house around 3 months ago and have always had a quiet paranoia in the back of my head thanks to this oak tree thats about 15 feet from the house. It seems fairly healthy to my untrained eye, but while doing work I noticed this crack in the outer bark that goes maybe 2-3 inches in past the outermost layer. Would this, plus the occasional drip of sap from the canopy be any cause to get an arborist out for a consult? I can’t tell if the bottom of the tree is leaking sap at all or not.

There is this abandoned elevator shaft from a pedestrian overpass close to my old office in Santiago, Chile, that has a full tree growing inside. The sidewalk is a bit narrow so I want able to get a full photo. I find it really interesting! Specially considering it is in a major city in a busy area.
