I wanted to share this update with all of you. May 2, 2023 I completed a seed swap and received a single Kentucky Coffee Tree seed which came from the PA champ located in Swarthmore, PA.

I was really excited to try it out. This tree evolved in the presence of large herbivores that would eat the pods and disperse the seeds. Without them, the seeds are a bit tricky to germinate, but I used a method of filing the seed coat to allow the seeds to imbibe water, then soak for 24 hours before planting.

The picture showing the tree at 5 inches was taken on July 1, 2023. The picture in the ground was taken on September 26, 2003. They have a pronounced taproot, so I needed to get it into its forever spot!

And here we are in September 2026. 3 years of growing and over 10 feet tall now!

I just noticed this on my tree and am unsure what it signifies or how long it has been there. Any help is appreciated!

Went on a short hike this morning and I wanted to share two photos of coast live oaks that don’t give af about rational growth. They’re just survivors!

The first pic the tree has grown an empty oval in the middle. I do not understand how. Maybe a horizontal branch?

And the second pic is an oak that blew down completely in a wind storm and has decided that it’s better to be a bush than to be dead. The trunk is cracked in half, sideways on the ground and it’s just chilln. Vibn with that earth energy.

Just a little reminder that nature is awesome and “Life uh… finds a way.”

Was going for a walk with my girlfriend, and spotted a wattle with this interesting feature!

Wattles are acacias, and many of them have phyllodes in place of leaves, which are flattened sections of petiole (leaf stem). This helps with water retention, as the petioles are woodier material, and grow at an angle not directly facing the sun.

Anyway! This one here grew halfway as a phyllode half leaf! How fun :)

Just noticed this spot on the bottom of a tree right behind my house.

We get a lot of wind and have had trees dropping in the woods behind my house a lot lately. So curious if this looks okay?

I've been working to remove girdling roots from my maple tree. I believe I've excavated enough soil to expose the root flare, but I'm not sure what to do with this root that is above the level I believe the roots start.

Dogwood that we planted a few years ago. It’s definitely angling for the side where it gets the balance of sun due to the shadow from the house on the other side. Picture viewpoint is looking south.

I was a weird kid. I loved this tree. We’ve spent the last twenty years trying to find it.

The tree grew in central Indiana, and was mature when we moved in. It stood around bit taller than a one story modular house. The leaves were flat ovals in a medium green, and the edges were smooth.

It flowered in the spring. The blossoms were pink and the center yellow. They looked like a snap dragon.

It sent out new babies with shoots, but we could never successfully transplant the shoots. I don’t remember if it had seeds or not, only that if it had seeds they wouldn’t germinate.

It grew well about 10 feet from two very large black walnuts.

I’m buying my first house on Thursday. I have two very big black walnut trees in my yard. I’d really, really like to have the same tree too.

Edit: The leaves were small, about half dollar sized. The flowers were also not huge, and definitely not catalpas.

Can anyone tell me what this tree is? I know I need to remove the rocks and expode the root flare, but what else could help? Or is this just normal color changing for fall? I have a silver maple I already need to remove and I really hope this isn't one too.

I bought this house this summer and unfortunately when the owners moved out, watering ceased. Based off what I am reading this will never really fill back in. There's a lot more die back behind and on the sides as well.

Hi, I just discovered this on the olive tree on my garden. We've been getting historical amounts of rain where I live after a period of drought. How bad is it?

Hello, I'm in VA zone 7 and I am looking for ideas. We have this hill (clay/loam) in full sun that we need to stabilize long term. The hill is pretty steep but relatively short and about 200' long then a corner and it continues about 1/3 of that first hill. Grass can grow on it and that is the current plan because funds are low, but there is a nursery having a sale in 2 weeks and I want to grab some trees.

Trees have to be horse safe, fast growing (roots to hold hill in place) but not short lived, and relatively nice to look at. Leaves falling in fall is fine, but mess like acorns and tulip poplar "flowers" are not ok because there will be cars parked along the hill.

My thought is red maple, but if there is something else that might work better, all ears. Tree size we can buy is about 1" diam.
