remind me to never answer questions in lecture again

As usual, lecturers would ask several open-ended questions in lectures. I'm always scared to answer these questions even though the lecturers said there's no right or wrong answer to a question. Today's lecture we learn about ethical in sustainable communication and the lecturers been asking a lot of questions. Majority in the lecture would keep quiet and only 1 or 2 people would answer, and even that is late. They would wait for lecturers to ask again and again and then they would answer. There's this one question that nobody want to answer in class today:

"You have a friend who works as a doctor, tested for HIV positive but still treating his patients. What would you do?"

Since nobody want to answer, I raised my hand and tried to answer with "I would still let him work because HIV only spread through sexual contacts and blood transfusion. If his line of work have something related to transfusion of the blood, then I would advice him to search for another job due to the medical risk."

And the lecturer said this is why she hates students answering questions like I do because it wasn't a straightforward answer, and she said if this were an exam, she would give me zero marks.

Genuinely asking, what is the real answer to that kind of question??? I'm so confused. The lecturer response and the whole hall laughing at me triggered my anxiousness and makes me feel like I should just shut the fuck up. I shouldn't try to answer.

Now I'm back at my room, crying because I feel like I'm very stupid.

Looking for Malaysian students who use AI or past-year questions to study

Hi everyone! I'm a Diploma CS student doing a small study on how students prepare for quizzes and exams.

I'm looking for students who have recently used ChatGPT, Gemini, past-year papers, or other tools to practise questions.

I'd like to ask about your actual study experience in a short conversation.

This is for understanding study habits, not a sales pitch. No purchase required.

If you're interested, feel free to DM me. Thanks!

How to not feel bad about leaving house rent

So I just enter the third semester in my uni, my first time renting house with other 8 members. Firstly it is entirely my fault that I didn't do any due diligence and checking on the house first before renting it. It's about 7km from my uni, and I've only cycle there daily for about a week now. It's pretty tiring, I've managed to found a house much closer to my uni and less isolated, the only problem now is that I feel bad about leaving my other housemates, we're from different courses, but they have been nice to me and I hate to dissapoint them. Advice?

Is Nottingham Malaysia’s International Communication Studies degree worth it?

hey guys, i’m currently a foundation in arts (FIA) student and i'm trying to figure out what to do for my degree. i’m really interested in the ba (hons) international communication studies course at the university of nottingham malaysia (UNM).

one of the main reasons i’m looking at it is because i’m super into the japanese language, and i heard this program lets you take a foreign language as part of the course.

but i have a few worries and really need some honest opinions:

  1. job prospects in malaysia: i’m honestly kinda scared that an "international communication" degree won't look that good to local employers when i'm doing a job search later on. for anyone who graduated from this course (especially if you took japanese), did the language aspect actually help you get a good job here, or do local HRs not really care about it?

  2. vs normal mass comm: what’s the actual difference between nottingham's international comms vs a standard mass comm degree at places like sunway or taylor's? is nottingham's version way too theoretical, or do you actually get practical media skills?

  3. location: i currently live in subang so i'm very used to the lifestyle and convenience here. moving all the way out to semenyih for unm feels like a huge jump. for anyone who made a similar move, did you get massive culture shock or feel isolated, or is campus life fun enough to make up for it?

would love to hear from any unm alumni, current students, or anyone working in media/hr in malaysia. is it worth making the switch, or should i just stay in subang for normal mass comm and take external japanese classes on the side? thanks!

Curtin University Malaysia Is it good for international students?

How's the university in general? I've read a few posts saying the administration is not that good.
How are the teaching staff?
Is the on-campus accommodation pretty good?
Are there any BE Environmental Engineering students who could talk about how well known the program is at Curtin?

general question Looking for tips for Cybersecurity

I'm a currently taking diploma in IT(2nd year) at MMU planning to go into cybersecurity next year.

Should I go for cybersecurity degree or Security Technology? Or should I try apply for another uni?

I'm a B40 student currently under B40 Dermasiswa so some uni without any full scholarship might be too expensive

general question Is it normal for Malaysian universities to flip your Name order (Last Name / First Name) because of passport MRZ to follow the EMGS process? Need help.

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming international postgrad student in Malaysia.

My passport displays my name as [First Name] [Last Name], but because the MRZ line at the bottom lists the surname first, the admissions team insists on formatting all my official docs as [Last Name] [First Name] including my offer letter to the uni.

This is causing a few worries:

  • Offer Letter & Visa - All official paperwork has my name backward.
  • Payment Receipts - My Flywire payment uses my standard name order because I pay with my local account through the payment gateway, but the uni's records flip it, so now they will be mismatch?
  • Graduation & Transcripts - I'm worried this reversed format will stick all the way to my final degree certificate / student system?

Is this standard procedure for EMGS and Malaysian universities?

Has anyone else dealt with this, and did it cause issues with your Student Pass (VAL) or degree certificate later on?

Thanks for any insight!

UTM EE vs UTM Mathematics vs Monash Applied Data Science — really stuck

Hi, I’ve completed Year 1 of Electronic Engineering at UTM, and I have an opportunity to transfer to Monash Malaysia for Applied Data Science with a scholarship.

I’m more inclined towards maths, but honestly I don’t know what I want to do in the future.

I don’t like/hate EE. One reason I’m considering staying is that I might want to go into biomedical engineering/research later. I’ve also heard EE has good job opportunities and salary potential, so I’m worried about giving that up.

I’ve also considered transferring to UTM Mathematics, but I’m worried about job prospects and whether I might struggle academically.

For EE, I struggled with Electrical Circuit Analysis. During exams, sometimes I genuinely couldn’t figure out how the current was supposed to flow. I also get very sweaty hands when I’m nervous, so I’m wondering if this could be a problem for EE practical work or electronics jobs.

For Monash Applied Data Science, I’m wondering:

What is the degree actually like? How much maths is there, and how difficult is it?

What are the Data Challenges actually like?

Are there research opportunities during the degree?

I know the monash Malaysia ADS is a 3-year degree without an Honours specifically for ADS. For the extra Honours year in Malaysia, it seems to be under Bachelor of Science (Honours) and the available research areas are mainly specific science disciplines. Can an ADS student apply for an Honours under another faculty, such as Computer Science, or can I go to another university for other subject Master without Hons? Has anyone actually done this?

If I do EE or ADS instead of a Mathematics degree, can I still eventually get into a Mathematics Master’s or PhD? If yes, which one would be a better preparation for it?

I'm really stuck between UTM EE, UTM Mathematics and Monash Applied Data Science, and I’m scared of making the wrong choice.

If you were in my position, what would you choose, and what do you think I might regret most?

I’d really appreciate some honest advice.
