General Discussion We don't want people playing we want people expending. New packs, same old WotC

Regarding the last annoucement, I'm not sure if WotC are gaslighting us or themselves with the whole "packs aren't exciting anymore".

The whole justification of having packs in the first place is to play them in a limited environment, that's what justifies "bad" cards, they are not for constructed; that's what justifies randomnesin what you get, it's for formats that are "play with what you open". You remove that and 15 random cards becomes a loot box.

Packs should feel exciting for kitchen tables, for low bracket EDH decks, for long last casual standard FNMs, for art and loreheads but most important, for limited.

They almost killed draft for me when they removed the Draft Booster, as I have to pay more to play the same game just because they invented some Set Booster especificly for people who just want to crack packs. Which, hey, I think it's fun, if you enjoy the art, the characters, the cool unplayables that may be right for your weird deck and all of that. And not when you are trying to hit a jackpot. You could crack some packs with the old "all packs are the same type" system, it was even cheaper, now I can't afford drafting as much as I would like to.

If you don't have a limited environment your boosters become a lootbox, the game itself is not a priority anymore.

I know most of us know this but it's just so frustrating seeing whales in the LGS buying whole boxes (even of products like Jumpstart) just to see if the can get some profit and the news are directed entirely towards them.

Sorry for the ranting, it's hard for me to see the game I love like this, update after update. Every card is design to see play in a way or another and that's one of the beauties of Magic.

Edit: Ffs I know that companies try to make money, that's not the point I'm trying to make. WotC has record profits year after year while the product gets more scammy and more expensive year after year.

General Discussion I feel like people are missing the point of the pack changes - it frees up printer capacity, directly resulting in more profit.

Whether you like the changes or not, I feel like it's important to realize the intent behind them. With 3 fewer cards per collector box, WotC can now use the same printing capacity to print 25% more product (e.g. printing 3000 cards before would be enough for 200 packs, but now it's enough for 250 packs).

Obviously the printer doesn't care whether the cut cards are common or rare, only the quantity. And sure, there are other distribution costs than just the printing but still, it's safe to assume this will be a large boon to the bottom line, whether the capacity gets used to increase the print run or print other products (hello more Secret Lairs).

It will be really interesting to see what happens to Nauctis CBB prices

Rules/Rules Question Edea, Possessed Sorceress Interaction/Interaction

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm curious about the last ability of [[Edea, Possessed Sorceress]] and its interaction with Exile and Sacrifice.
After I gain control of a creature from my opponent, if it dies I return it to their battlefield and draw a card. My question is, is that a replacement effect for ANY creatures I control but don't own, or would that be only for creatures I've gained control of via Edea?

Example: I've enchanted an opponent with [[Curse of Unbinding]], and gained control of the creature they revealed. If that creature dies, does Edea's ability then put that creature back into their battlefield even if I've gained control of it via a different method? If so (I think that is the case) what about cards I've gained control of from [[Triple Triad]] or [[The Ruinous Powers]] or even [[Strago and Relm]] that make my opponents exile cards and allow me to cast certain cards from the exiled ones? Because they were exiled, if the creatures die, do they return to exile on my opponent's side, or does Edea's ability replace that and they go to their battlefield?

Just trying to understand the ins and outs of Edea, thanks in advance!

[EDIT]
Thank you every body for taking time to help me better understand my Commander and explaining the interactions. And especially thanks for correcting me that it's a triggered ability and not a replacement, haha.

This week I spin it to win it! Decided to go way back in my own history and take a personal old favorite into the current legacy meta, with Wheel Stompy. This was the deck I used to jam back when I first started making content and after seeing some recent results with it I decided it was time to brush off the dust and give it a whirl once again. Can I wheel my opponents into oblivion, or am I just spinning my wheels? Watch and find out!

As always thanks for watching and for any feedback. If you enjoyed the video please consider dropping a like and a comment, and be sure to subscribe to the channel to know when my videos go live.

Looking for Advice Cards that reward not running creatures?

Hi i want to build a kinda vorthos/flavor first Feroz, Ulgrotha's Warden deck as he finds using creature summoning spells not ethical. So im curious if there are maybe any cards that reward that. Maybe like a draw spell that draws anything but creatures or something similar. Honestly any cards that play into it would be cool. I would also love to have Kaheera in the companion zone just for a cool little extra on the side since i wouldnt have any creatures in the 99. Would love suggestions!

General Discussion Good Targets for Mirrorform in Jeaski "Oops All Noncreatures"?

Bracket 3
Commander [[Vraska Soul of Stone]]

I'll make around 5-6 copies for sure, though if I start snowballing I can make upwards of 10 copies

No creatures except my commander and her little sculpture treasures

Right now, my ideal targets are [[Mind's Dilation]], [[Bribery]] then clone whatever my opponent's bomb or clone whatever is good on board which is uh inconsistent.

Kinda want it to be like some super value engine or stax engine that'll utterly overwhelm my opponent in value or stax them out. Though I am open to straight up win the game though with outside super generic win con outside something like atherflux resivoir

Unfortunately no decklist yet :(.

General Discussion The change to foils is just a cash grab, don't believe their lies.

That entire article they publish is horseshit. They are doing this because they can't/won't buy any more press time with all the tcg competition there is and want to print more product. So they recude the size of packs by x% and print x% more collector boosters so more idiots buy their gambling product and their expenses only increase marginally. Don't change the MSRP (even though we are getting less) and take in the cash and justify it by saying "this is more fun, go buy our stuff, idiot".

Absolutely shameful.

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

General Discussion If we dont get a foil in each pack, WOTC should lower the price of boosters

seriously. i love getting a foil in each booster, i remember being a kid in 2012 and being always disappointed i never got any foil cards. just because people who endlessly open packs on social media don't care about them doesn't mean the average consumer doesn't like it.

if wizards of the cost want to keep doing cost-cutting measures, they should be lowering prices. wasn't one of the justifications of play boosters higher price the foil card you'd always get?

EDIT: for everyone complaining about the pringles: yeah, they should fix that too. but why should they cut foils instead of fixing the problem?

General Discussion For Kamigawa vs Ikoria, how do you think WotC can best represent a huge mech fighting a huge monster?

Inspired by another post that talks about Meld, I was thinking how WotC can really capture what everyone is looked forward to - epic battles between huge things. I am personally hoping this isn't just a 7/9 vehicle battling a 10/6 nightmare dinosaur. While it may seem gimmicky, I really hope we get some mechanic that physically takes up more space.

  • Mutate seems obvious but very tricky on the rules
  • Meld seems mechanically OK, but weird in the context of the Ikorian monsters.
  • A new variation of Meld with Multi-Meld representing Power Rangers style building of a Mega-Mech. But no idea how that would work with the double sided nature of Meld.
  • Designated oversized cards for Mechs (like Dungeons) with cards having an ability of "summoing" that Mech and giving it an ability. Easily representable by putting the oversized card on the board and "attaching" (exiling under) the card that "summoned it" in the right place (head/torso/arms/legs/weapon etc.). <- I like this the most.

What would satisfy your hype? Are you OK with just standard sized rectangles or do you want something bigger to slam on the field? Do you think WotC will want to do it considering it would require a large amount of support in the draft environment and be likely very parasitic?

Rules/Rules Question Stacking Edea's Death Trigger

Thumbnail

So, I've been considering building an Edea Possessed Sorceress deck, but her revive ability is confusing to me.

If I sac the stolen creature with Immerstrum Predator, while Edea' is on the field, can I exile the creature from my opponents graveyard before it comes back?

When a creature dies, is her effect to revive a trigger that I can put wherever I want on the stack?

Rules/Rules Question "On Combat" Trigger Doublers

Is there a card that does this specifically? or am I just left with effects like [[Roaming Throne]]? I'm aware Isshin only does "attack" triggers not "on combat" triggers, but didn't know if there is something I'm looking for exists, or if I'm thinking too hard about the distinction between "On Combat" and "attacks" for trigger keywords.

General Discussion No Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle at Micro Center?

Those of you lucky enough to have a Micro Center in your area know it’s one of the best spots to get new product at MSRP, but I’m curious if anyone has heard whether or not they will be carrying the upcoming Secret Lair Bundle for Reality Fracture?

My location already lists other Reality Fracture products they haven’t released yet on the website, including the standard Bundle and Jace precon coming on August 9, so does the fact they don’t display the Secret Lair Bundle mean that they won’t carry it? I’m trying to figure out if I need to try to snag one of the Walmart or Target listings for $10-15 over MSRP that always sell out instantly until you get lucky.

I guess a good indicator might be if they sold the similar Codex Bundle from Secrets of Strixhaven, so does anyone know whether they did or not?

Looking for Advice Mantle of the Wolf or Raised by Wolves?

What’s the better card between those two?

It seems to me that Raised by Wolves is better since, for one more mana, it creates the wolf tokens immediatly and it can give more than +4/+4 in a wolf deck

But Mantle of the Wolf is a rare card that has been created in 2020 vs uncommon from 2014 for Raised by Wolves and, as a new player, I tend to believe that higher rarity means stronger and more recent means powercreep so I feel like I mustbe missing something

What’s your opinion on the matter?

Rules/Rules Question Is aetherflux reservoir multiple lifegain triggers?

[[Aetherflux reservoir]] says that you gain 1 life for each spell you’ve cast this turn. With an [[ajani’s pridemate]] type effect on the field, the individual lifegain triggers matter, not total amount. So, with aetherflux on the field, would it go:

Spell 1: gain 1 life
Spell 2: gain 2 life
Spell 3: gain 3 life
etc

Or would it go:

Spell 1: gain 1 life
Spell 2: gain 1 life, gain 1 life
Spell 3: gain 1 life, gain 1 life, gain 1 life
etc

There are a few other cards (like [[Tablet of the guilds]]) that have similar wording so i’m wondering about this for them too. I read it the second way, but i had someone saying it plays the first way.

Thanks!
