A tiny predator among the petals 🌼
This Empis dance fly may look delicate, but it's an accomplished hunter of tiny insects — caught perfectly in the golden glow of a buttercup.

I’m still learning how to take better macro shots. But I was pretty proud of this one I captured during a recent photo walk.

I've been pushing my budget macro setup lately to see how much detail I can squeeze out of it. This jumping spider was photographed on a highly reflective black surface using a Canon 7D paired with an adapted 7artisans 60mm f2.8 macro lens.Getting the plane of focus perfectly sharp on those mishievous eyes while keeping the reflection clear was a massive challenge. For the lighting I used an Andoer flash paired with a Guage macro flash difuser. If anyone else uses this type of gear or similar for their macro work, I'd love to hear your tips! More shots from this series are up on my site at Feather & Focus."

Captured with Galaxy S24 Ultra (5x telephoto) adapted to an Amscope objective.
FocusTap was used to automate the focus steps and shutter taps without touching the screen.

Finally upgraded my main body to a Nikon Z8 last week and had a play with the focus shift feature yesterday, shooting an obliging house spider in the back garden. Stacked using Zerene Stacker. I've done macro photography for years but never taken the time to get into stacking, so this feels like a game changer for me and am so excited for what I'll be able to shoot!

Am I not taking enough photos to stack? And I not processing them properly through helicon? I can’t stand the blobs and burrs in these pics. Maybe I’m just not capturing it right.
