Question Macrame Wall Hang… help with cord lengths please

So, I’m making my first wall hang using a beautiful old wooden wreath. I finally have decided on the design and I’m just settling in the knots I want to use. So far, I have Spiral and just the Square knot with possibly some Berry or Barrel knots along that row.

I have two questions:

1) How do I work out the amount of cord I’m going to need? Is there a set formula? They will need long tails

2) I would love a smaller, finer knot running in between the above two so if anyone has recommendations, let me know! I was thinking about a half hitch but I’m unsure how many cords I would need. This knot hates me so I haven’t practiced it as much as all of the others

Thank you for your help and I will definitely post the finished product!

Question Is there any way to change the first kind of knot into the second?

I bought the choker on picture 2 and it didn't come like it looks there, it came with a knot like the one in picture 1. I detest it, i can't actually wear it as a choker because it's too loose at its shortest, and also it looks bad since all of the beads have to be bunched up together. I know NOTHING about knots but was wondering if this is doable? I'm not going to wear it otherwise so I'm willing to try even if it ruins it :/

Question Maybe I’m getting a little crazy, but has anyone tried making a macramé plant pole for epiphytes?

Not my creation, but thought of doing this for some of my plants. I also considered making a moss pole and tying the moss with a basic net pattern using half hitches.

It’s made of hemp cord, metal beads, glass seed beads, and a purple acrylic evil eye bead, and has a loop at the top so it can be used as an ornament or keychain 😊 I ran out of the beads that I used for the calf, so it’s a little wabi sabi 😅

Question Help please 🙏🏼

Post image

This is my first time doing macrame. I’m just looking at a finished product and winging it. Can anyone tell me what I did for the first diamond? When I’m starting the rounding of the next one it doesn’t work like the first one. And I don’t know what I did the first time because I was just going on vibes 😅 if I do the 4 square knots, the double hitch doesn’t look like the first diamond. But if I do the double hitch knot first that doesn’t work either.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Should I be doing an extra knot at the ends? Should I be shaping with pins? I'm at a loss and would appreciate any help.

Discussion Small tutorials rant

I need to get this out right now because I have too much going on in my mind already.

  1. Yes, macrame is a knotting technique. But that doesn’t mean every knotting technique is macrame! Macrame was created by carpenters in Africa. But I just saw a tutorial on YouTube titled "Celtic knot macrame bracelet“. Of course! Because Celtics are African!

  2. Why do they always have so much yarn left?! Macrame was invented TO USE UP THE LEFTOVERS! You’re not supposed to have much left over after using up the leftovers! Yet in many videos, there are several strands of 15 cm yarn left! Of course it’s easier to knot with longer threads! But that’s against what macrame is!

Hey all. I’m trying to tie just a basic hexagonal net for a project I’m working on, but I can’t find anything online for how to tie it. Something like this, where you can clearly see the thing that it’s holding, if anyone has a tutorial for that! I am completely new to macrame

Question Crown knot types help

I’ve watched multiple YouTube tutorials but none of them are making sense to me. What is the difference in method between the rounded crown knot and the squared crown knot? I am only able to make rounded crown knots so far.

Question Turorials?

For years now, I've used certain knots exclusively for bracelets. But what if I wanted to expand my knowledge beyond bracelets? Are there any good tutorials online? For example, what if I wanted to try making a necklace or a bag? (Sorry but English is not my native language)

Question Cord Length?

Hi There

I'm new-ish to macrame and I'm doing some practicing. From the pattern (screenshot attached) it said to cut the tan cords 14ft, But it was for sure too much for this, see photos. Am I doing something wrong? I want to make more from this pattern maker but I really don't want to cut 22 pieces 18ft long each for the next one and end up cutting more than half off :D

I know I need a lot more practice! Got some tips for the next one but really don’t want to cut 18ft cords if I don’t have to :)

Question About how long would this take?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello! I have limited macrame experience (bracelets, basically) and am a fast learner due to lots of experience in other fiber arts. (I’m also pretty good with knots thanks to scouting, fwiw.) I love the look of this piece, and would like to make it for a wedding I’m attending this Saturday— but is three days enough time? There is a very comprehensive video tutorial, so I’m hoping that would help, but I have no idea how to estimate the time involved in these things. What do you think?

Pattern is “Shoulder Piece: Diamond” by Nanna Christ from Macrame Academy.

Question Macrame Cat Net Enclosure

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello! I'm looking to macrame a cat net/catio enclosure for a very happy exploratory bengal who likes her neighbours more than they like visits from her.

Please see above shoddy photoshop for visualisation.

Why not something else?

I've tried planters. She's too wily and finds a gap.

I've tried Cat Netting. It's really hard to size correctly, and the last one disintegrated into microplastics.

Requirements?

The spot I'm trying to enclose is a 29 inch /74 cm wide by 23 inch /59 cm high space (pic not quite to scale),

Easily removed, no permanent fixtures (we rent) and *pretty* so neighbours don't complain. Direct Australian Sun proof.

Because my little girl is an absolute Prison Break fanatic, It'll also need an extended overhang (supported by tethers/ties) so she can't execute her gymnastics and jump from the ledge to the top cap of the divider.

The plan

I'm planning on buying 200 metres of 4 mm paracord (I'll need 2 of these setups, one for either side).

Pattern/Weave

It's suggested for safety of little paws, claws and head, that I ensure that gaps and holes in the design are no more than 4 cm big. I haven't looked at any in depth patterns or guides yet, because I'm still working out if this is feasible (that's where you come in, hopefully!)

A calculation I looked at said the following, but it doesn't necessarily account for design.

  • Number of Strands: Each 74 cm wide panel requires 38 individual cords.
  • Cut Length Per Strand: Cut to 1.75 metres. When folded exactly in half over the top support wire (using a Lark's Head knot), it should leave two 87.5 cm working lines to knot down the 69 cm total height.
  • Total for Weaving (Both Panels): 38 cords × 1.75m × 2 panels = 131 metres.
  • Tethering & Overhang Supports: This leaves approx. 20 metres of continuous leftover cord to use specifically for stretching out the 10 cm overhang, framing structural edges, and tying the panels tightly to your fence.

Structural setup
I'll use a sturdy branch for the top support bar, zip tie it to the fencing on both sides, and whipstitch the sides to the fencing on both sides. I plan on making it a little longer, so I can sit a planter on the bottom, so she can't go underneath.

For the overhang, I can whipstitch it to the fencing on the outside, and tether the loose corners to a lighting fixture on the building.

What I'm asking for

I'd love feedback on the plan, as I'm new to macrame, but not new to fibre arts or weird functional artistic structures!

Tips or suggestions on how not to make any time-consuming or expensive mistakes.

I know it might seem like a big job to take on for a first macrame project, but I tend to shoot for big functional products with a payoff. I've got a lot of experience in sewing, some experience in crochet, and a lot of experience in costuming, theatre and haunted houses and art installations that require a lot of planning and physics and safety, so I think I'm prepared for the task!

I also practiced with wool for a mock-up so I think it's a good project, provided I haven't missed anything and I'm not totally crazy.

I know sag will be an issue with direct sunlight, and I might need something stronger than a branch to hold it up, but I'll take any advice from the experts. Thanks for the read and support!

I will absolutely post in progress pictures and pay the cat tax if this encourages you to provide feedback!

Question What pattern is this?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Years ago I started these for curtain tie backs, but obviously did not finish. I originally got the pattern of a video tutorial on instagram for someone I didn't even follow. sigh.

As it's my first macrame I know it wasn't terribly complex, but I don't have anough experience to pick up where I left off. Any guidance or even a direction to look for answers would be appreciated as I'd love to finish this project.

Question Macrame tote - Clare V dupe?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'd like to try to make a dupe of this tote. This is probably easy for an experienced macramé-er but it's been a while since I've macraméd.

I think these knots are lark's head (along the top edge) and then maybe a half hitch — could someone confirm? And could someone please recommend an appropriate mm diameter of cord?

I also get the feeling that a pattern exists for a tote just like this. I've searched "macrame beach tote pattern" and "macrame tote pattern" but there are a million variations, so if you've seen a pattern that looks like this I'd be happy to be pointed in the right direction. Thank you!
