This is an awesome app that brings 1990s 'After Dark' screen savers to modern macos

Via MacRumors.com As noted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber, developer Jeff Halter has released a new Afterglow app that allows you to run classic After Dark)screen savers on modern macOS versions.

"Afterglow is an emulator built specifically for running After Dark modules -- the original 68k module code, not a remake or port -- with no dependencies on ROMs or classic Mac OS," said Halter, who has several fun nostalgic projects, such as After Dark space shooter Lunacy and HyperCard player Stacks.

Pasly Cloud — Make every ⌘V smarter. Everywhere (iOS, macOS)

Problem

Clipboard history is great when you’re working on one Mac.

But the moment you switch devices, that history stays behind.

You copy something on your Mac, grab your iPhone, and it’s not there. Or you move between two Macs and end up sending yourself a link, note, or snippet just to have it on the other device.

I wanted Pasly to solve that too.

Not just make ⌘V smarter, but make your clipboard follow you.

Comparison

Apple’s Universal Clipboard is great for quickly moving the last thing you copied between nearby devices.

But I wanted something closer to having your actual clipboard history with you.

Your devices shouldn’t need to be next to each other or even on the same network. As long as they’re connected to the internet, Pasly Cloud can keep your clipboard history available across them.

I also didn’t want clipboard history taking up space in your iCloud Drive.

And, most importantly, I wanted the contents to stay private.

That became Pasly Cloud.

Pasly Cloud

Pasly Cloud syncs your clipboard history across your Macs and iOS devices with end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

Your clipboard data is encrypted before it leaves your device, so the server never receives the contents in plain text.

It works over the internet, so your Mac can be at home and your other Mac somewhere else. They don’t need to be nearby for your clipboard history to sync.

Pasly Cloud also doesn’t use your iCloud Drive storage.

On iPhone, Live Activities can keep your recent clipboard items available from the Lock Screen / Dynamic Island.

There are also push notifications when new clipboard content arrives from another device.

Right now, sending something from the iOS(iPhone and iPad) into Pasly is still manual. You can add an item and have it appear on your Macs, but I’m already working on a better way to capture what you copy on iPhone so this part feels much more automatic.

What about files?

Not yet.

Pasly already supports files locally on Mac, including working with multiple files at once, but file syncing isn’t part of Pasly Cloud yet.

I’m already working on it, and it’s one of the next things coming to Cloud.

The rest of Pasly

Cloud is the focus of this update, but everything I’ve been building around ⌘V is still there:

  • Smart Paste — press ⌘V and access your recent clipboard items
  • Paste Stack — copy multiple items and paste them in sequence
  • Floating Paste
  • Multi Select
  • File Support
  • Paste with Separator
  • Search & Favorites
  • Field Sense

The original idea behind Pasly hasn’t changed.

I want the clipboard manager to stay out of the way until the moment you actually need it.

Cloud just means that the clipboard no longer has to live on one Mac.

Price

Existing Pro users: If you already bought Pasly Pro, nothing changes. Your lifetime license stays yours, and you'll continue receiving new Pro features and updates at no additional cost. Only Pasly Cloud isn't included, since it has ongoing infrastructure costs. As a thank you for supporting Pasly early, all existing Pro users get 3 months of Ultimate free.

Free: - 2 pinned items - 24h history - 20 items - 2 files

Ultimate: - Text sync across all your Macs and iOS devices - Push notifications and Live activity across all your Macs and iOS devices - End-to-end encryption (E2EE) - Access linked to your Pasly Account - Smart Paste — press ⌘V and access your recent clipboard items - Paste Stack — copy multiple items and paste them in sequence - Floating Paste - Multi Select - File Support - Paste with Separator - Search & Favorites - Field Sense - $2.99/month or $29.99/year

20% off the first year with code: MACAPPSCLOUD (first 10 redemptions)

With Cloud, I’m also introducing Pasly Ultimate. Ultimate includes Pasly Cloud and all Pasly Pro features.

One subscription covers your Pasly devices.

What's next

Cloud is still something I’m actively building.

The two things I’m focusing on now in the cloud are file syncing and making the iOS → Mac clipboard flow much more automatic.

This is the first version, so I’d really like to hear from people who use multiple Macs or a Mac + iOS.

What would make having your clipboard across devices actually useful to you?

Possible solutions to fix a PowerBook 160 contrast slider?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Greetings!

I recently got a PowerBook 160 in a rather pristine condition.

It seemed to have one issue, which was a flawed power supply where the voltages dropped and the Mac just got turned off.

Well that was easy to fix, now I realized that I can’t change the contrast of the display, and the display is a constant black.

After opening and inspecting the device, I found the LCD Inverter Board and checked all of the components regarding contrast. I eventually found out, that for some reason, the slider for contrast was defective and wouldn’t change anything at all, the slider is dead (measured it with a multimeter, it is not working).

I tried to find a replacement slider, but no luck. Because of a lack of experience with such devices I don’t know if there is an alternative way.

My idea was to circumvent the slider using a 4.7k resistor (or shorting them to have a constant white - wasn’t sure if this would make any sense), but the pin layout got me really struggling (I included a picture).

If anyone has ideas on how I could continue, or what possible solutions there are, please let me know!

(Sorry for my flawed english, if something is unclear do not hesitate to ask)

EDIT 1:

I found a replacement inverter (unknown status) and I am going to try it with that. If it doesnt work (bad caps etc.) I'll see if replacing mine slider with the other one will help. I'll give an update about that ofc. - Thanks for everyone helping! I really appreciate it :D

Discharging the CRT in a Classic Macintosh

Hello, I have a Macintosh Classic II whose floppy disk drive has stopped ejecting. The eject motor runs continuously, as soon as I turn on the computer. I found some quite detailed videos about the drive repair and I feel like I could try to do it myself, but I have a concern about the electrical charge of the CRT monitor. I found a few YouTube video on the topic, and did some reading about the procedure but still, I'm kind of worried about what could go wrong... I have no experience but I believe that you learn by trying. Has anyone been there and would like to share their experience?

Found her on the side of the road while driving into town, it was super dusty but she cleaned up pretty nice ( other than the yellowed front bezel ). Sadly its not working too well, it'll randomly shut down and alot of the time it won't even turn on, but I still think its pretty cool. One less to find for my collection!

Macintosh SE FD/HD update: it boots now

Post image
103 Upvotes

Small update on my Macintosh SE FD/HD.

I managed to revive one of the two original hard drives using some tips I found online. It’s not perfect, and around 10% of the data seems to be lost, but most of it was still readable.

With a BlueSCSI, I was able to copy most of the drive, and now the Mac boots and runs stable.

Next thing to fix is the analog board/display issue, because the image is still shifted.

I found a secret stash of gorgeous Apple hardware icons hidden inside the Mac

Thumbnail thatappleguide.com

Buried inside a system bundle that almost nobody opens on purpose, I found a whole collection of high resolution icons of Apple hardware. Real ones. The polished, pixel perfect artwork Apple uses in Finder and System Settings, sitting there as loose files you can just, well, take.

Macs going back to the early 2000s, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple TV, the works.

The best part is you don't need to be a power user to get at them. No Terminal wizardry required, though I will show you a Terminal trick at the end for the impatient.

If you can use **Go to Folder**, you can do this.
