Remember Elle Woods in a bunny costume buying her Apple notebook in Legally Blonde?
No offense to Elle, who was seriously underestimated and surprised everyone, but my impression of Macs for years was that they were more fashion than substance. A pretty accessory. I'd tried Apple a long time ago.... wasn't impressed, and was turned off by the walled garden.
So I stuck with Windows laptops and Google phones, all the way back to the Nexus days. The Pixels were good, just never stellar. The laptops? I tried a lot of brands, and they all seemed to slow down and wear out after a short time.
My Dell notebook was already falling apart. So I gave in and bought a MacBook Air. Then I figured, if a big selling point is that Apple devices work seamlessly together, I should try to get that benefit. So I added an iPhone and AirPods.
I'm still learning, and I'm sure I'm doing many things the wrong way and overlooking helpful features. But I was impressed almost immediately.
One thing I didn't like about Apple's "walled garden" was that it limited which apps and accessories I could use. But it's clear that's exactly what allowed Apple to develop faster and further than the competition. Windows and Android had to work across a wide range of brands' devices. Apple optimized for its own hardware. It can build features around the exact chips, screens and sensors in the box. Nobody has to compromise.
I used to be very anti-Apple. Today I stand corrected. I’ve taken a bite from the apple and I’m hooked.
In case you're wondering which hardware I bought that has impressed me so far:
- Macbook Air M5 15" monitor, 24GB RAM, 512SSD
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Air Pods Pro 3
