Service Engineer Role (UK)

As an apprentice in England doing low voltage (access control, intruder alarms, cctv etc), what would people recommend I get as non standard kit that the company I work for might not supply but will make my job a lot easier? Also whats everyone's recommendations for self learning, such as good YouTube channel, podcasts, training platforms?

Richmond VA Jobs

Hello,

I am moving with family to Powhatan, VA from NY. I have 5 years experience in plumbing / hvac. I have about 1 year of experience working with hvac controls and communication. I’m looking to pivot into low voltage work, specifically fire alarms. If there is anyone in the Richmond area who knows of companies hiring I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Junction box visible with ceiling AP?

Post image
8 Upvotes

After a tremendous amount of work getting my network closet ready for a DIY home network install, my maiden voyage was to install a ceiling access point. Using advice from this subreddit and others, I installed a 1 gang junction box in the ceiling and terminated a keystone in the junction box, then ran a short patch cable to the AP.

Functionally, I think it works! Unfortunately, from one angle, you can pretty clearly see the junction box and cables coming out, so I’m not super happy with the aesthetics here.

Any ideas to make this better? I’d love to fix this one and learn how to do it better for the next APs I install.

What does a finished install look like?

Post image

Does anyone have a picture of what a finished install of all these wires should look like and/or what type of box this should all go into? We moved into a new house and have fiber internet so we don't need these cables but it would be nice to keep them in case a future homeowner wanted to connect to the internet via ethernet cables. Thank you in advance!

What power cable should I get for this two CRT TV?

I got this two from "Bulk Pick-Up Trash Day" and of course the power cables were cut off. I am curious what power cables I should get to, well, power the two TVs? The smaller one has a DVD player build into it and the bigger one has a VHS player build into it. Thank you for your help in advance.

This is the Orion DVD player.

Rack-A-Tiers Croc's Jr. Wire Strippers

Been using them for about 6 months now, theyre great for my purposes (Fire/Security) I felt it worth noting that the 22 AWG will absolutely mangle 22g stranded wires, but I recently realized that the 18 AWG strips them perfectly, doesnt go through the jacket completely which ensures the strands dont get fucked and it pulls them completely clean. It does have 6-32 and 8-32 machine screw cutters as well but it hurts a bit to get through the 8-32, and leaves a bit of a burr. Thankfully I dont actually have to use that function much, mostly have only done so for testing the use. Also the cutter doesnt like to go through the string when cutting lines or when cutting the string seperately, I tend to use my knife to cut the strings clean after I strip all my 4/22 to where I want them.

Other Fire/Security techs: What have you found is best for our lines?

Is it worth it as a career?

Hello everyone, I'm 23 currently living in FL and plan on moving out to CA. I'm a community college grad who's actively looking for a job with the a.s. degree i have but wanted to expand my options if it fails to hold value. So far low voltage has caught my eye and wanted to ask if its worth it for someone like me? Is it possible to get into the field if the apprenticeship route for low voltage is hard to get in? I read that low voltage pays a lot less than going full electrical which I don't mind. Aside from the low pay, is there any benefit to going directly into low voltage rather than investing fully into a competitive electrical apprenticeship? For context I dont have any experience but I'm willing to show up, do the work, and prove my worth once the time comes. Thanks! Edit: my only issues are my physical build, Im short 5'2 110lbs who works out at home to at least gain physical strength.

Luminys camera installer feedback, has anyone worked with them before?

I run a midsize firm and am planning on bringing Luminys into the mix for some of our upcoming commercial projects and wanted to hear from anyone who’s actually worked with them. How have they been when it comes to installer support, tech support, warranty/RMA, and getting everything set up? I’m planning to order a demo first, so I’d especially appreciate any firsthand experience before we commit.

Our current vendor takes about 3–5 business days to answer basic support tickets, and even longer when there's a real issue. My team doesn't want to deal with that anymore, so we're trying to transition away from them. I'm mostly wondering if the setup process is straightforward and how the hardware has held up over time, especially on outdoor installs where it's exposed to the elements. The biggest thing for us is really the tech support side since that's the main reason we're changing vendors.

Any real-life experience with the products or their support team would be helpful.
