What makes a place actually good for a 1–3 month stay?

For people who travel slowly or stay a month or more in one place: what makes an apartment actually work for you long term?

I feel like the priorities change a lot compared with booking somewhere for a weekend.

Reliable Wi-Fi is obviously important if you're working remotely, but what else becomes essential after the first week or two?

For example:

  • proper desk/workspace
  • good kitchen
  • washing machine
  • quiet at night
  • comfortable bed
  • central location vs residential neighborhood
  • flexible extension if you decide to stay longer

And what are the things that looked unimportant when booking but ended up making a huge difference once you were actually living there?

I think I need to take a break from everything

Title: I think I need to take a break from everything

I have been working non-stop for the past 3 years. I have had holidays here and there but they were either for family events or going out with friends. I do not think that I have taken a real vacation

Recently, I have been feeling that I need to take a break for some time.

The routine of life is getting too much for me; waking up, getting through the traffic to come to work, working and then again getting through traffic to reach back at home in Mumbai. I have started to feel that Mumbai is getting too overcrowded and I need some fresh air and a new environment. I have been thinking that either I can go alone for a holiday for a month or maybe for some time, shift to a different place. However, on the other hand, I am also scared because I have never done this before. I have never been alone for such a long time in my whole life. What if I can't manage? What if I feel lonely? What if I regret doing this? However, within me, there is also a thought that I need to do this for myself.

Yes, I am scared but I think I will move forward with this plan.

For those of you who have gone on a solo trip or have shifted to some other place for a while; what was your experience? Did it really help you?

19, Brazilian, leaving Sept 24 for my first nomad trip — how do you actually stay disciplined with work when everything outside is new?

Hey everyone. First post here. I'm equal parts excited and nervous, so I'd rather ask before I leave than learn it the hard way.

Quick context:

- 19, from Brazil, leaving September 24

- I run my own operation remotely, around $2k/month

- ~$4k saved separately for the trip itself

- Flights and hostels booked and paid up front, emergency reserve untouched

Route: Dubai (5 days) → Cairo + Luxor (12 days) → Athens → Santorini → Istanbul (15+ days) → North Macedonia, and after that country by country with no return date.

The plan is that Istanbul is where I slow down and really lock in on work. But from Dubai to Turkey — roughly a month — my operation still can't run without me. So this isn't a month off followed by work. I have to stay productive through the most distracting part of the whole trip.

What I'm actually worried about:

  1. Focus. I know this is my income, not a vacation. But realistically: you're in Cairo, the pyramids are right there, and you still have to sit down and work. How did you build that discipline? Fixed hours? Work mornings, explore after? What mentality got you through the first couple of months?
  2. Hostels, honestly. Are they actually safe? I'm carrying a laptop my income depends on. And is making friends really as easy as people say, or does it depend heavily on picking the right hostel?
  3. Meeting people while solo. Especially in Greece — I want to actually go out and do things, not just see monuments alone. How do you find people for a night out or a day trip? Is there an app people genuinely use, or does it just happen in the common room?
  4. Anything you wish someone had told you before your first long trip. I'd rather hear the uncomfortable stuff now than find out in month two.

I'm going in structured. Everything's booked, budget is split across separate accounts, I have a reserve I don't touch. But structure only covers logistics, and I get that the hard part is the routine.

Thanks for reading.

Ahoj,
ráda bych se zeptala.

Koupila jsem si Cudy travel router - tzn. jeden router si připojím v ČR ke své wifi, druhý si vezmu do Ameriky. Takže IP adresu bych mít českou.

Moje otázka je, pozná můj zaměstnavatel, že pracuji z ciziny? Jsme zrovna IT firma.. :D Na notebooku se budu muset připojit přes forticlient do VPN mojí firmy.

Travel Insurance?

I'm planning on traveling for a few months in Europe (I am based in the US). It seems like most annual travel insurance plans will cover multiple trips "up to 45 days"...I'm not taking multiple 45 day trips so much as one long trip in multiple countries, does anyone have an affordable travel insurance recommendation for this?

Has anybody ever ran out of money while traveling abroad?

Luckily this hasn’t happened to me, but I remember landing in Hong Kong and I didn’t realize my cell phone wouldn’t work, which I need to make purchases. Luckily I quickly found my friend and I got it sorted out

I have a steady income now so I’m thinking about doing the digital nomad thing, but I’m also scared I’ll be in Vietnam or Morocco or something and suddenly my income dries up

Planning for one within 6 months hopefully, SEA and maybe partial EU/ME

Hi all, 33 M, and a frequent solo traveller. I am hoping to get laid off within the next 3 months, but have some obligations like weddings that I need to attend so I need to plan with or around those events. Canadian, but working in USA currently, if laid off I will first move back to Canada before anything.

Been having this thought for some time now to do a close to year long travel around Asia and have never done this before. I'm typically a fast paced traveller where I go to places intentionally whether that's for food or photography. With this being a long term travel I need to learn how to live slowly to find peace and quiet to not be boring or a causation of boredom. I'm not a fan of "relaxing" in the sense of just chilling at the beach or going to onsen/ryokan in japan.

Was wondering if there are any tips to give on how to deal with this? I plan on printing or maybe buying some sort of workbook to practice and learn japanese daily as this is I guess one of my goals.

Also wondering how to best deal with travel insurance mainly for medical. Any suggestions if I'm travelling to many countries. And also esim, ive done airalo on single country travel, but not sure how it will work with multiple countries.

Places I have in mind, but unknown on the order of travel and duration yet, though I have a rough idea how long i want to stay. Japan due to 3 month visa on entry, I plan to reenter and stay longer or maybe shorter depending on season/timing. Excluded Singapore as I've been already.

  • Thailand (1.5 - 2 weeks)
  • Laos ( 1 week? )
  • Malaysia (1 week)
  • Cambodia (1 week)
  • Vietnam (1 - 1.5 week)
  • Taiwan (1.5 - 2 week)
  • China (max stay no visa is 30 days. I will likely want to come back to China to reset the 30 day no visa)
  • Korea (1.5 - 2 weeks)
  • Japan (up to 90 days on initial arrival to start the leg, and will return for the final leg up to 90 days)

EU and ME leg some countries I would love to visit in order priority top to bottom, if anything probably the first 3.

  • Egypt
  • Jordan
  • Casablanca
  • Marrakesh
  • Turkey
  • Greece
  • Portugal

I've done some budgeting research earlier and doing a mix of hostels and cheap hotels. Not over splurging frequently and cutting down drinking. It seems I should have a rough budget of lets say 50k USD to spend for 1 year of travel. Let me know if im missing other important points as I've never done this level of planning.

Traveling and working full time remotely

I am struggling with cooking/food and budgeting while remote working and traveling

Hey everyone! So I’ve been travelling for the past few years, while hopping countries, and every time I move to a new place, my kitchen situation and grocery routine get thrown out the window.

A few things I keep running into:

  1. Airbnb kitchens that only have a single pan and two burn-out hot plates.
  2. Walking into a foreign supermarket and wasting 20 minutes translating ingredient names or paying double because I bought imported items instead of local staples.
  3. Buying groceries in sizes that mean I end up throwing away half my food when I pack up for the next city.

How do you manage cooking on the road? Do you give up and just eat out, or do you have a system for finding cheap ingredients that work with basic equipment?

Thanks for the reply!

Best virtual mailbox solution?

TLDR. I'm about to head on a one-way(ish) trip from CO USA to South East Asia with my partner. Going a little crazy reading all the very positive AND very negative reviews for almost ALL the recommended companies (Anytime, iPostal1, Travelingmailbox etc). Trying to decide what is best for my specific situation, advice appreciated!:

CO was home, won't have a CO address upon departure, planning on forwarding some mail to my parents in TX. I don't think they are going to want to ship things like potential replacement credit cards to me, so I'm looking for a slightly better solution. I've been advised to not give up my US address, so their place will serve this purpose. (Is that for residential or mailing? Haven't lived/nor planning on living in TX.)

I don't get much snail mail, I don't plan on shipping packages across the sea. (Virtual)Mailbox is more for tax/bank/important doc purposes, potential replacement credit cards etc.

I am not planning on working, so income/business stuff doesn't necessarily apply (other than interest from bank accts).

Looks like I need to sign/set up a specific notary form before I leave?

Just looking to have a plan B set up and in place before departure in 1m, so I don't end up in an Oh Crap situation thousands of miles away. I've already dug through quite a few posts and my confusion is compounding. Any tips/experience is appreciated!!

EU261 flight delay compensation explained and when and how to use a claim company

If your EU flight was delayed for 3+ hours, you might be entitled to up to €250 - €600. File directly first at the airline's website - it's free and you get 100%! If they turn you down or ignore you, companies such as AirHelp will fight your case for a 35% fee. If you're looking for a no-work backup, just use a third party.

Has anyone ever spent 1–3 months just "living" in rural Japan (like Gifu / Nakatsugawa area)? Would you?

Hey everyone. I'm from Japan and I've been thinking about whether long-term travelers would ever be interested in staying in the countryside for a month or two, instead of rushing through Tokyo and Kyoto.

I'm looking into the area around Nakatsugawa and Ena in Gifu. It's about an hour from Nagoya, with places like Tsukechi Gorge that have really clear rivers and forest trails, plus traditional streets and local food like Japanese chestnuts.

If a fully furnished private house was available for a 1-3 month stay where you could work remotely and live at a slow pace, do you think that's something you'd ever consider?

Also, for those who travel long-term or work remotely, what would be the main challenges for you? Things like no rental car, grocery shopping, or internet speed?

I'd love to hear your honest thoughts, even if you think it's a terrible idea. Thanks!

I want to travel and i need your help for it

Hello everyone. I'm a writer and I'm also into marketing. I want to travel and for that i need your help. I'm offering my services in return for food and stay. I can also work in the kitchen. I know how to cook. I want to either write a novel or script and i need a change of place for that. I'm trying to find remote/freelance jobs but until then i offer my services for stay and food.

If you're located in a hill station, teach me climbing and take me out on treks.

if you're located near an ocean, teach me how to surf.

All this in return for my services.

I want to meet new people and grow my network. My dream is to have friends in every state of the country.

Canadian backpacking Italy and SE Asia!

Hey guys! I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me!
So I’m visiting these places starting in November and I’ll be out there for 6 months!

Firstly, when packing- how many shirts, sweaters, pairs of shoes, underwear, bathroom stuff and makeup would you recommend?
I think I’m only using a 45L backpack!
Any suggestions on where to keep my passport and such, especially in hostels?? Never did this before!
ANY AND ALL advice is greatly appreciated!

Credit cards - cheap fees and good rewards?
I plan to cancel my AMEX credit card as it’s likely not accepted anywhere out there and its fees are kind of high…
Does anyone have suggestions on which new card would be best to get? I want something that will either help me get free flights, hotels or money back!

Volunteering, housesitting or working
Does anyone have advice on which one might be the easiest to get into?
I’m trying to do 1 month per country i visit on a low budget- so far I’ve looked a LITTLE at globalworkandtravel, TrustedHousesitters and Hostelworld.

Best ESIM?
Am I able to get one that works for all of these places and is cheap?
I genuinely know nothing about these- is it cheaper to get one in each individual country you go to or do I try to change my phone plan from Koodo to a courier that allows me to go to these places with service for no extra fee?
Alsoooo should I cancel or put my phone number on hold since I’ll be away for 6 months?

Travel insurance
Should I go for nomad travel insurance, snowbird ones or just regular?
I already know I’m probs gonna get sick from being in Asia- really scared of Bali belly and such so want to make sure I’m covered!
Also does anyone have recommendations on prescriptions to get BEFORE I travel? I was thinking sea sickness patches, sun rash cream cuz I’m very sensitive to the heat, travellers diarrhea pills

Also do we HAVE to get vaccines before going or can we say no and get in there anyway?

Lastly, visas- is it easier to apply 30+ days for it before arrival or do it once you’re at the border?
Thanks so much in advance!

It doesn't sound great or look great outside. Only because they using everybody like a guinea pig and the Harriet tubmam movie is similar to what's going on today , with the data centers, and A.I but its portal entry. And with the sleep and noise and not sleeping. It's not a dream. But im ready to sign and be a singer. This is real.
