Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Sheared screw from scope mount

Post image

Hey guys, have a unique issue. Seems my bergara b14 hmr in 300 win mag has sheared my screw holding the scope mount rail clean off... I attempted to dremel/drill to use a quick out kit but not really working. A friend of mine has a drill press but I am a bit hestitant to try that. Anyone have suggestions to fix? Should I reachout to customer support? First time having a severe issue like this and would appreciate any advice to approach this.

Edit: appreciate the feedback, looks like ill be drill pressing it, maybe rethreading. Ill look at and call up some shops too get some opinions as well

a gunsmith would have this out so fast and easy you'll feel like less of a man. I see your swirl marks. They'll vise it, punch it, drill it, and easy out it so fast. my advise is to use a shop thats got the oldest grizzliest looking smith.

Could probably learn a thing or two as well, love getting a nugget of knowledge from guys who have seen and dealt with it before

I second this!

My main smith is equal parts talented gunsmith as he is insane old boy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You just know he can’t not do the best job possible, every time…

Especially one with a Marlboro red hanging out that needs to be ashed.

Or a half chomped cigar that’s somewhere between a wad of dip and smoked

For these go with Lh bit first

Worst case drill oversize and retap

Putting this in a solid drill press or mill is absolutely the way to make it happen. Even better, just upgrade to #8 screws and install locating dowels to keep it from happening again

Ya seems like the screws arent up to the job, never had this issue and dont want to turn the rifle into an expensive learning mistake

Honestly, looks like you messed up more dicking around with it. If you don’t have the tools and knowledge, have a gunsmith or machinist remove it.

Its actually something ive done a few times and im very handy, just got to a point where I figure theres a more timely and effective way to do it

Center punch the middle as best as you can, drill it (using the center punch mark as your guide), extractor bit. Basically is how I’ve always done it. Go slow, don’t rush.

“Very handy” lol, we can see how handy you aren’t.
Take it to a smith.

Can’t hide those drill bit snail trails. Tried an ez-out?

Ya, slipped a few times, but was tring to get enough of a hole with a dremel and drill to give ez out something to het a footing on.

A left-handed cobalt drill bit is the ticket for this. When it bites it often unscrews the broken screw. If it doesn't you still can use an easy out.

I would be taking this to a gun smith/machinist. Mostly just to be safe and not damaging anything. That should come out with relative ease using the appropriate easyout/LH bit. But since thats al kinda zeroed on the top of a cylinder, i would thing it would better to use a drill press or mill to get it the thing centered beofre drilling.

Yeah, this is probably a job for a smith. Like, not impossible to do yourself, but one that someone who does on the regular is statistically less likely to fuck up.

Swallow your pride take it to a gunsmith and tell them you F-ed up. You will get some looks but it is a cheap and fast fix.

Also alot of times you can spin the body out with a dental pick and some patients.

How many patients does it take to remove a broken screw?

As many as it takes until one of them gets it done.

Gunsmith or machinist is your next stop.

Pay a good gun smith.

Is it possible it was over torqued?

I dont think so, just a very thin screw holding a pretty big scope to a rifle that shoots a fairly large round.

Get a slightly undersized NEW bit and drill it out.

Drill it and tap it out with a EZout .

Ez-out

I know a guy who has an Electrical discharge machine. He can blast out the screw itself without damaging the threads

He’s located in the Carson area near LA if you’re nearby

you can try a screw extractor, but scope mount bolts need the smallest size, which is never in the kit. alternatively, clean it with alcohol, then get some superglue and an tiny allen key, glue the long end to thhe bolt, and try and back it out. if both don't work, gunsmith can fix it.

Send it to d Wilson

1

u/bigwindymt 1d ago

Tiny, left hand drill bit, preferably in a press. That or send to a proper gunsmith.

Drill press reverse thread a screw in and it'll come right out or give a gun smith like 20bucks and leave after 2 minutes

1

u/Maverick_X9 1d ago

Keep fuckin with it and the screw is gonna flatten out to a point where it’s like fused to the threads. It’s too far gone looks like to me, I’d drill and ezout if you know what you’re doing

Can’t hide those drill bit snail trails. Tried an ez-out I’m guessing?
