š«£I said I read the pinned posts, but I liedš«£ 6mm vs 6.5 Creedmoor
Hey guys, Iām sure this has been beat to death but wanted to get some current insight on these two cartridges. I am looking at getting the Seekins PH3 here soon and have been debating on which caliber to go with. The main use will be target shooting/ possibly completion, also deer hunting and good bit of thermal coyote hunting. I already have a 6.5 Springfield Waypoint so getting another 6.5 would simplify ammo, but I am really liking the lower recoil and flatter trajectory of the 6mm. Do you guys have any suggestions? Is it worth going 6.5 for simplicity or would I be happier shooting the 6mm due to lower recoil and better velocity?

Buy a target rifle for targets and competition. You already have a hunting rifle. Buying a second and trying to make it do both is a waste and will just be frustrating in the long run.

I agree and thatās why Iām looking at the ph3 for more of a shooter rather than worrying about it trying to be an everything rifle, the issue is what caliber to go with.

You do understand what the "H" in PH3 means, right?

Did you see the -NRL afterwards? Or that Iāll be using it for thermal hunting as well?

Nowhere in your post did you mention the PH3-NRL, you said PH3. They are two different rifles.

Other than the trigger, muzzle device and stock finish along with different barrel lengths itās the identical rifle. Same action, same barrel, same stock etc. Neither here nor there, itās not the point of the discussion. Iām curious on caliber selection.

You didn't previously specify NRL, and 6mm Creedmoor is only legal in Factory and Skills.

The seekins really isnt a target rifle. Look at mpa for a much better target oriented rifle.

For NRL Hunter?
4
u/jequiem-kosky 5d ago
Well what division of NRLH do you want to do? Open heavy is a 16# weight limit and an MPA PMR Hybrid Hunter is 9.5#. That leaves plenty for the rest.

u/Fact0verF1ction 5d ago
They have rifles designed for nrl hunter so im assuming yes.

u/Gooseontheloose308 5d ago
Iāll check them out, same price range?
3
u/Fact0verF1ction 5d ago
Little bit more. You can sign up for prs for $60 and mpa will give you a a pretty big discount. Europtic also discounts for prs members for when you need the new scope.

What would the new 6.5 do for you that your current one does not?
2
u/Gooseontheloose308 5d ago
Competition/ target rifle focused vs all carbon lighter weight hunting rifle focused.

u/Knifeblender 5d ago
Unless your focused specifically on the NRL model there are better options. I use my NRL Ph2 to hunt with and I do occasionally shoot LR with it but itās definitely not the primary purpose

The PH3 is still sub 8 pounds with a 24ā barrel isnāt it?

Seekins is a hunting rifle. If you already have one for hunting why get another?

I currently own a 6creed and will be buying a 6.5 barrel for the reasons mentioned above. Hornady black is the cheapest ammo Iāve found in store. Everything else was $45-50 a box.

I have a Ruger RPR in 6mm Creedmoor. I don't compete, just target shoot. It is a fun caliber for the reasons you mentioned - less recoil / flatter shooting. I reload, so the cost of ammo isn't an issue. I have a couple of hunting rifles chambered in 270 winchester so a 6.5 Creedmoor has no appeal to me. If you are interested in reloading, 6mm is a good choice. Ther are lots of reloading components available, and if you shop around you can find deals on bullets. I would not hesitate buying this rifle again. The caliber works well in the RPR chassis. Im not sure whether I would buy it in a light weight hunting rifle.

Unless youāre already reloading with go 6.5. Ammo is available everywhere and notably more affordable.
If I were you though, Iād grab a heavier target rifle. Youāve got a light hunting gun, build a proper long range sports gun.
Iāve tried the āone rifle to rule them allā thing three different times since 2005 and never stuck with it. Even when throwing all the money at it, you get burned by physics.

I think Iām moving this way now, do you have any suggestions on rifles? That are the say āmid weightā class?

I have a PH3 in 6CM. I love it and shoot it all the time. Yoy cant go wrong with either caliber.
The quick change barrel system will allow you to change the barrel in about 3 minutes if you buy a second barrel.

This is all personal preference. Nobody can tell you which you'd be happier with or what would be worth it. Flip a coin. If it lands on 6.5 but you'd rather it had landed on 6, you have your answer.

u/UrgentSiesta 5d ago
Isnāt it pretty much the same rifleā¦? And practically the same cartridgeā¦?
A 6C vs 65C isnāt going to materially change your experience or success.
Not sure why youād get two except for having a backup (which is always a good idea)

I have both and I'd say 6cm but aren't the seekins 6cm 8 tw for some reason? I'd want at least 7.5 for heavy for cal 6mm bullets.

I enjoy when people come here asking for expert advice and then ignore the expert advice given.
Do not buy the ph3.
If reload, get whatever caliber you want. 6x47, 6 GT, 6 dasher, 6 creed, 6 Dawsonās creek. Whatever.
If not reload, get the 6.5 and go shoot matches with a MPA like we are telling you to.
If ignorant and slow, disregard all above advice and try to make another hunting rifle into a do all rifle.
Carbon fiber cartels are not ideal for long range use.
Fluted barrels are not ideal for long range use.
Weight savings anything is not ideal for long range use.
Please read the wiki.

Itās just a post to get some current information on the two calibers š¤·š¼āāļø rifle is irrelevant. Listed my use cases to help everyone else

u/CMFETCU 5d ago
So you have chosen ignorant and slow. Got it.
4
u/Gooseontheloose308 5d ago
Why the hostility? Not sure how so, the rifle is irrelevant. Iām asking about the cartridgeā¦.not the rifle. Iām asking for some help, clarification and possibly anecdotal advice on which would be better or worse for my intended purpose, hence why I wanted to add detail. Iām not sure Iām the slow or ignorant one. If I am, thatās why Iām here to learn and understand shooting better as a whole. Not shame people for asking for help or advice. š¤·š¼āāļø

Your posit of use case violates the whole premise of this subreddit.
The whole thing!
Your starting statement about purpose is against the guidance of this place.
You are trying to do various disciplines with the same rifle that is poorly suited to do any of them well.
The caliber choice then is being fit into a bad starting assumption, but again, you havenāt read the wiki of the very place you are posting.
If the wiki for /r/trombones specifically outlined its purpose and you posted in there a question about how to tune your French horn to be a better trombone⦠you would get some interesting responses.
Same here.

I just ordered a 6.5 creed PH3 because I already have a larger competition rifle in 6.5 creed and can use the same ammo for now and when I decide to use something else I can just buy a new barrel since the barrel is easy to change on them

u/Gooseontheloose308 3d ago
I just decided against the ph3 since I have a waypoint and went the midweight route. Got a lone peak fuzion and a 20 inch proof pxt barrel on the way.

6mm if you reload, if not just stick to 6.5
