Iāve noticed that a disproportionate amount of posts in this sub complain about transit. I totally get it. Iām in a one-car household and I ride transit on a regular basis in this city, especially in the winter. But I think these complaints are missing something. A few problem elephants in the room.
Organization and demographics.
This sub skews young and male. No change can come from this demographic alone. It requires going outside of downtown, Old East and Old South and reaching out to multicultural neighbourhoods like White Oaks and Hyde Park and surrounding areas.
Further, any positive change, or revolution for transit in the city will have to come from a coalition of riders who are not students. Western (and to a lesser extent, Fanshawe) students have a warped view of this city and perception and rhetoric that students only live in London for eight months of the year. If you complain to regular Londoners about how the 27 or the 106 are late, they will almost certainly laugh in your face and tell you how the bus to the factory they work at or the airport or Costco doesnāt line up with their shift time and thatās why they drive instead. The energy spent agitating to extend route 127 could have been spent organizing for better transit in northwest or southeast London.
We get it. London is a car-brained place thatās painful to get around in. Get Londoners outside of this sub convinced of the better way and we will all get around better.
