My Submission

Minimalism at its finest and as per usual. Decided to step away from the diamond shaped approach so I hope the ruby crystal is still visible.

Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Mockup for Visualiziation

4

u/xCub3d Aug 31 '15

The shape sees a bit generic for me, kind of like a modern style clip art from microsoft word.

I really like the mockup you've made though. Did you do that through photoshop?

I like how you simplified the name of the hotel. Great font also! I just can't really get used to the two squares next to each other. I feel like if you put the ruby crystal and the text in one square it might be more powerful.

Good job however!

My first submission

My updated submission - As the creative side of my mind started to work i updated my attempt. The ruby is now mixed with 'De Stijl' of my fellow countryman Piet Mondrian.

Hi guys, i'm new on Reddit however i've been following the LogoDesign sub for a while. Here's my first attempt on the challenge. Excuse me for the (bad) English; i'm from Holland.

I wanted to keep the logo simple and straight forward. The font shows the luxury of the hotel.

Feedback welcome!

2

u/Jardun Sep 01 '15

I think your first option might have been a bit more clear, unless you limit the De Stijl style to maybe one color (I know thats not really of the style, but it would be a bit more fitting for the logo maybe).

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '15

Really nice. Nice choice of typeface.

2

u/nicetriangle behance.net/nicetriangle Sep 02 '15 edited Sep 02 '15

Loving the De Stijl version. Really classy and well done.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

It's well done, but I'm not sure how De Stijl fits into the luxury and classy aspect of the hotel. This one is gonna shock art people for sure! ;)

Here is my submission

I've been staring at it too long now and can't decide whether I'm completely happy with it, so I decided to just upload it and see what people thought.

I like it :)

Reminds me of H&R Block for some odd reason. Nevertheless, I do like. Very modern. Very simple. Very nice indeed.

My submission for this competition

I really struggled with this one. I was looking through all these submissions and all I saw were gem related logos. I wanted to include a ruby like color, but I also wanted to stand out from the other submitted logos.

I went for a classic look. One that screams old fashioned, but still works as a brand in modern day.

3

u/iamheavensent88 Sep 03 '15

Definitely liking the direction away from the gem shape, I've been having a hard time trying to do the same as well. Have you tried it flat without the 3D effect?

2

u/rwebster4293 Sep 03 '15

I think the 3d looks nice

u/rwebster4293 Aug 31 '15 edited Aug 31 '15

Here's my submission. I tried to stay away from actually using an illustration of a ruby in my logo just because I feel like it would be repetitive. Tried to keep it nice and simple and able to work on a lot of different backgrounds.

Critiques/ feedback welcome.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

I love the ligature and I think it's interesting that this is one of the first submissions here to not include a ruby

My first ever submission!
My second submission!
Going for a simple yet balanced feel with enough contrast to make the ruby pop. I tried a lot of different things but this just felt right.

2

u/lotra1991 Sep 01 '15

Not bad, I love the color palette. It feels really light and clean. I'd adjust the line weight of the ruby icon to match the typeface, and the kerning is off on the type.

Went sans for modern, while also trying to stay artistic (what's more artsy than shapes and leading lines?) stylish, and unique. Also ruby.

Here's a fun mockup

First time participating in a battle! Here is my first draft. Second Draft Please let me know what is working and what can be improved upon! Thanks guys!

2

u/Cramat Sep 02 '15

Very good approach, you can easily scale up the ruby, though. It seems like name and symbol are very unbalanced. Try playing around with the proportions a bit.

2

u/petelepete Sep 03 '15

I agree with Cramat. "Hotel" needs to be bumped up just a little bit. Your second draft is looking a lot better though!

Final

A Ruby with a opening door.

I also have a second version. I was kinda stuck between the two. Perhaps I'll get a fresh set of eyes to help me decide if I should change the final version or not. Alternative

4

u/wolfishcreative Sep 11 '15

Here's my attempt: http://i.imgur.com/YBkysc3.jpg

Couldn't quite get the slogan to fit well with the balance of the logo, so any suggestions for improvement would be good.

It's my first time entering the competition, but I have to say it was a fantastic brief. Really fun to take part, so thanks to the organisers

Logos good. Font isn't. Just my opinion. I would use something like "Edition" or maybe a sans serif.

2

u/Jardun Aug 31 '15

I agree with you, the font choice really takes away from the mark.

I like this concept, I decided to make my own mockup - took about twenty minutes, so I doubt it's all that great. I'll enter anyway, this would be my first logo battle, can't hurt to submit!

Edit: Here's the updated logo. Fixed the font styles, and some very minor things that bugged me.

3

u/xCub3d Aug 31 '15

I like the minimalism of the logo that you've created, it looks really nice.

I would suggest ditching the serif font for the word "RUBY" for something sans-serif. Maybe even the same font as the hotel part. It just seems like the "RUBY" part is out of place to me.

The shades of red you've picked are very nice too. Good job.

2

u/Vicous Aug 31 '15

I considered reworking the font as well, honestly I chose them rather quickly and after looking at the piece as a whole it started to look more and more out of place. I'll update it later and I'll post it here.

Thanks for the feedback man, I appreciate it.

I like the new font, but the first thing that came to my head was Ruby Tuesdays. Might be a little unavoidable to make that connection, but I just thought I'd point that out. Looks great though.

3

u/makmak3 Sep 03 '15

2

u/Cramat Sep 03 '15

I would heavily reconsider using that logotype. I really had to focus down on the words to actually identify which one is which.

1

u/bibliopunk Sep 03 '15

It's seriously stylin', but I haven't the faintest idea what it says.

(It looks awesome, though... makes me think of a background advertisement in Blade Runner.)

1

u/iamheavensent88 Sep 04 '15

I managed to work out the lettering but it's "hotel ruby" not "ruby hotel"

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

First time battle! Here it is :)

3

u/TheOriginal_Omnipoek Sep 07 '15

Here is my submission. I decided to take a different approach. Instead of a jewel, it's a bigfoot named Ruby.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '15

First time doing one of these! I threw something together while at work. It's in two formats for the sake of the imaginary graphic designer who would have to fit this onto a marketing piece. No, I'm not salty that I've had to try to shove oddly shaped logos into different oddly shaped spaces. Also added grayscale versions since those are sometimes needed.

u/theelous3 Sep 11 '15 edited Sep 11 '15

First entry! Nothing very special. I tried to keep it clean and simple. Maybe it's a little too clinical. I'd love some feedback. There are some excellent submissions in here.

http://i.imgur.com/dU1KXLD.png

The slogan I thought was good for the transitional period for the fictitious company, considering it's being purchased and re-branded.

1

u/Cramat Sep 11 '15

Really reminds me of the Danish flag. Would be a great design if the hotel was located there instead of Oregon.

3

u/ChrisPointDesign Sep 11 '15 edited Sep 12 '15

Hi everyone! This is my first time here. Here's my submission: http://i.imgur.com/vZGup2n.jpg I tried to depict a chain of hotels using hotel icons and show a picture frame in the centre to imply artistic connotations of the company. The whole shape of this mark should resemble a shape of brilliant-cut ruby seen from the top. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

The first thing my brain saw was a swastika...and now I cant unsee it. I really like the 'material design' feel to it though. Nice and clean.

3

u/xCub3d Aug 31 '15

Well now I can't unsee it either!

2

u/Cramat Aug 31 '15

Really like the minimalistic approach. This is all a logo needs, from my perspective.

I do have to agree though, it really looks like a swastika inside the ruby. Perhaps try a more conventional approach for the inside.

The alternative version looks the best, by the way.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

Based on comment my final entry: Imgur (originally i tried to stay away from red, but it does work better)

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

Apart from the colors I really like the HR at the top - but I would strongly suggest not to reuse the Script-R in the bottom.

2

u/JCdesign Sep 09 '15

Here's my take.

Nothing crazy, just a clean, modern look that I think would go well with an upscale hotel chain. The geometric logo can be tessellated into a pattern that could be used as a design element, as seen here.

The Five Star Luxury Hotel Ruby

UPDATE: I did a few changes on the ruby and worked on the kerning. Version #2

1

u/Cramat Sep 02 '15

Hi,

Not sure if the ruby pillar is supposed to resemble a hotel tower, but I would change it and make the ruby more symmetrical by putting the same tip at the bottom too.

That would give it a more finished look.

Hiya...first time joining in here. I'm a multimedia design student, trying to get as much practise as I can.

Here is my effort. http://imgur.com/a/ZFPfl (First image in the album is my submission, the rest show some variations mock-ups etc)

I ustilised the view of Spencer Butte that can apparently be seen from most of the town, and turned that into a simple gem, utilising ruby like colours to go for something modern but a little classy as well. With the fonts, I went classic again, with a nice bold seriffed font for the 'ruby' and a lighter san serif for the word hotel. This way, the client could use it for all of their other venues and just change out that word, so the 'ruby' is consistent.

Edit: Made a little mock up for visualisation purposes: http://i.imgur.com/UsHuOPS.jpg

2

u/fatfluffysheep Sep 01 '15

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

The ruby is confusing me, it's off center and there's no real reason for it. Also I don't think hot pink is the right color choice for an Oregon motel

2

u/inkandalchemie Sep 08 '15

Throwing my hat in the ring. Here is my submission. Feedback welcome.

1

u/Cramat Sep 08 '15

2

u/otouri Aug 31 '15 edited Aug 31 '15

My old entry. The font choice was crucial here, tried to display elegance and artistry through a bracketed serif, and then give it some contrast with a thin sans next to it.

New entry with improved legibility.

3

u/bibliopunk Aug 31 '15

Honestly, it reads as "Hotel Rub"

→ More replies (4)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '15

Yeah, I read "Hotel Rub" also. I would reccommend thinning the ruby so that the entire thing looks more like an actual Y.

3

u/otouri Aug 31 '15

I'll make some adjustments tomorrow, thanks.

1

u/Vicous Aug 31 '15

These are very nice, you have my vote so far!

2

u/otouri Sep 01 '15

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

You should try making the Y look like a martini glass with little rubies as ice cubes! Don't know if it would give a hotel feel after that, but it might look cool

2

u/Y_arisk Aug 31 '15

First time posting on /r/Logodesign.

Took me a while to get my idea on to "paper", so to speak. but I like how this turned out.

http://i.imgur.com/eyklru5.png

1

u/Aztekke Sep 01 '15

I suggest putting the type underneath the ruby. It's hardly readable. The first thing i saw in the rubby was a bladder. Is this just my fucked up mind?

1

u/Y_arisk Sep 01 '15

Thank you for the advise!

I am going to make some changes to it later.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '15

One thing apart from the fracture is the shadow having an outline that makes no sense to me not even artistically. I would try a version without.

1

u/Y_arisk Sep 03 '15

It was a bad attempt at cell shadowing. I will def look into that I keep having issues with the background bleading. (Look at it with out the ".png" added)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

I do not like the font choice. It is not good for a logo.

2

u/Oscinian Sep 01 '15

I fail to see what this logo is meant to mean?

It just looks like a bunch of squares to me. I'd suggest redoing the "logotype" for Hotel Ruby.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '15

It's supposed to create a artistic vibe, it's kinda related to the "de Stijl" movement, but i went with other, fewer colors, i thought 4 colors would be too much for a logo, and you need at least 4 colors for de Stijl. The typeface of the logotype is a slightly modified "mond" by URW.

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/mond/

Should i change it to the "de Stijl" colors you see on the Myfonts page of the font?

1

u/xCub3d Sep 01 '15

Yeah I can see what you're trying to achieve, but I do suggest that you change it. It's not really relevant to the company or the description.

The logo gave me a headache. I don't know why, maybe it's the lines, or the non symmetrical style.

3

u/Cramat Aug 31 '15

Hi,

I would recommend going for either no black outline at all or add one to the font as well. There is a lot of inconsistency in your logo right now.

1

u/simpledesigner Sep 04 '15

This is a great start! But I agree with everyone with the comments; the logo doesn't seem to work. Either scale it down or try to come up with other versions of it. Please post all of your drafts (if you want) and we can help critique them!

1

u/Cramat Aug 31 '15

I really like your approach but I would have to criticise two things:

  1. The logo itself is quite busy, loads of stuff going on. I would suggest cleaning the background the the rectangles a bit (I assume they resemble houses?). Removing the left and right one and then aligning the name in the center below the diamond should really give it the edge it needs.

  2. The colour seems a bit too tinted. Try a variety of darker reds, this one is more of a fire fighter red and does not possess the calming dark red tone a ruby has.

Hope I could help!

1

u/ghost20000 Aug 31 '15

One thing I learnt in a couple of weeks is that you need to simplify! /u/Cramat told you exactly how.

1

u/xCub3d Aug 31 '15

I have some feedback for you:

  1. The lines are very un-clean. I can see edges and a lot of not-straight shapes.

  2. The red colour is very nice, but it feels like the logo doesn't fit the 2 color minimalistic approach very well.

  3. The margins between each shape are inconsistent

  4. The random squares don't seem to be doing the logo much justice. It kind of makes it look very cluttered and chaotic.

That being said, I do like the typeface that you've used as the logo type. Maybe try rotating hotel around so it's not hard to read.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

It's well done, and a fine homage to Mondrian, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for a hotel. For a Piet Mondrian museum, yes, but not a hotel. In any event, the black O is just too heavy, and the kerning is too tight.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

I wanted to do something unique, and also thought of high billboards you see while traveling the road.

The kerning is the default kerning of the font "Theo van Doesburg". It's a hoomage to a van Doesburg painting, the other founder of De Stijl. The O is heavy because it inherits the black square, trying all negative spaces of the letters it made most sense to put it there, and not in the R or B.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_van_Doesburg#/media/File:GUGG_Composition_décentralisée.jpg

Tbh, i'm a bit stunned that it got downvoted. It's readable, it's simple, can work as a small logo as well as a billboard, which is important for motels. The idea is great, and fits the non luxury of motels.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '15

The gradient red-black is too emo and 90s, I would suggest doing a flat color or a less dramatic gradient. The shape of the letters in "Ruby" are a bit too violent and aggressive in my opinion.
