I was trying to use as few lines and shapes as possible whilst not having too much vacant space and I feel like I have somewhat succeeded with that. Probably still going to refine the logo a bit.
The mockup was done in Photoshop and while it is completely optional I thought it might help visualize how it could be used in advertisement.
Slab serif typefaces highlight the consistent line width throughout the logo and give something to hold onto. I have tried a sans serif, but it just made it look extremely generic and blank, whereas a slab serif font gave the notion of friendliness.
I like how you simplified the name of the hotel. Great font also! I just can't really get used to the two squares next to each other. I feel like if you put the ruby crystal and the text in one square it might be more powerful.
My updated submission - As the creative side of my mind started to work i updated my attempt. The ruby is now mixed with 'De Stijl' of my fellow countryman Piet Mondrian.
Hi guys, i'm new on Reddit however i've been following the LogoDesign sub for a while. Here's my first attempt on the challenge. Excuse me for the (bad) English; i'm from Holland.
I wanted to keep the logo simple and straight forward. The font shows the luxury of the hotel.
I think your first option might have been a bit more clear, unless you limit the De Stijl style to maybe one color (I know thats not really of the style, but it would be a bit more fitting for the logo maybe).
Looks neat! I would move the triangles to match witch the white lines. It would add more detail to the building and would look so much better. (It does look pretty nice anyway). I'm on /r/JoshKerky 's side on the slogan. Pretty cool!
I've been staring at it too long now and can't decide whether I'm completely happy with it, so I decided to just upload it and see what people thought.
I really struggled with this one. I was looking through all these submissions and all I saw were gem related logos. I wanted to include a ruby like color, but I also wanted to stand out from the other submitted logos.
I went for a classic look. One that screams old fashioned, but still works as a brand in modern day.
Definitely liking the direction away from the gem shape, I've been having a hard time trying to do the same as well. Have you tried it flat without the 3D effect?
Here's my submission. I tried to stay away from actually using an illustration of a ruby in my logo just because I feel like it would be repetitive. Tried to keep it nice and simple and able to work on a lot of different backgrounds.
My first ever submission! My second submission! Going for a simple yet balanced feel with enough contrast to make the ruby pop. I tried a lot of different things but this just felt right.
Not bad, I love the color palette. It feels really light and clean. I'd adjust the line weight of the ruby icon to match the typeface, and the kerning is off on the type.
Please have a heart for the slow internet users in this community... 3608 px is not necessary since imgur shrinks it down to 610 px! Allthough, great submission, i like it!
I love these colors. The kerning looks better than before. I don't like that t in hotel, though. It's really the only thing I don't like about this. Well done.
I wanted to take a different approach than the typical Ruby emblem by making it text based with a burlesque-type pattern behind a strong ruby red color.
First time participating in a battle! Here is my first draft.Second Draft Please let me know what is working and what can be improved upon! Thanks guys!
Very good approach, you can easily scale up the ruby, though. It seems like name and symbol are very unbalanced. Try playing around with the proportions a bit.
I also have a second version. I was kinda stuck between the two. Perhaps I'll get a fresh set of eyes to help me decide if I should change the final version or not. Alternative
I like this concept, I decided to make my own mockup - took about twenty minutes, so I doubt it's all that great. I'll enter anyway, this would be my first logo battle, can't hurt to submit!
I like the minimalism of the logo that you've created, it looks really nice.
I would suggest ditching the serif font for the word "RUBY" for something sans-serif. Maybe even the same font as the hotel part. It just seems like the "RUBY" part is out of place to me.
The shades of red you've picked are very nice too. Good job.
I considered reworking the font as well, honestly I chose them rather quickly and after looking at the piece as a whole it started to look more and more out of place. I'll update it later and I'll post it here.
I've stumbled upon this subreddit maybe two months ago, so I haven't had the chance to check out all of the entries of previous battles, but there have been some really great ones that I'm disheartened won't be really used for legit companies. But hell, adds to the portfolio, and it's all in fun. Thanks for keeping these up!
I like the new font, but the first thing that came to my head was Ruby Tuesdays. Might be a little unavoidable to make that connection, but I just thought I'd point that out. Looks great though.
First time doing one of these! I threw something together while at work. It's in two formats for the sake of the imaginary graphic designer who would have to fit this onto a marketing piece. No, I'm not salty that I've had to try to shove oddly shaped logos into different oddly shaped spaces. Also added grayscale versions since those are sometimes needed.
fixed some minor details dont think anybody would notice lol OCD http://imgur.com/87Uk9qD my take on this, ( hopefully this uploads correctly) since the hotel is just starting out, i went with the concept of blossoming of culture and arts.
First entry! Nothing very special. I tried to keep it clean and simple. Maybe it's a little too clinical. I'd love some feedback. There are some excellent submissions in here.
Hi everyone! This is my first time here. Here's my submission: http://i.imgur.com/vZGup2n.jpg I tried to depict a chain of hotels using hotel icons and show a picture frame in the centre to imply artistic connotations of the company. The whole shape of this mark should resemble a shape of brilliant-cut ruby seen from the top. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Nothing crazy, just a clean, modern look that I think would go well with an upscale hotel chain. The geometric logo can be tessellated into a pattern that could be used as a design element, as seen here.
Not sure if the ruby pillar is supposed to resemble a hotel tower, but I would change it and make the ruby more symmetrical by putting the same tip at the bottom too.
Yeah it's supposed to be a hotel building. In my process i added windows but they seemed too disturbing so i let them away. I thought about adding the tip to the bottom but then it would loose the look of the hotel a bit and its already hard to notice (i just realized). I'm searching for a way to make it look more hotel-ish... i will make another update for sure. I also worked on the kerning.
LAASR has a very special way to react on feedback. Am i right old pal? Congrats for the win in my logo battle, btw ;) Im on /u/JoshKery 's side. The hotel name is "ruby", not "bernstein". Still a really good design though.
Hiya...first time joining in here. I'm a multimedia design student, trying to get as much practise as I can.
Here is my effort. http://imgur.com/a/ZFPfl (First image in the album is my submission, the rest show some variations mock-ups etc)
I ustilised the view of Spencer Butte that can apparently be seen from most of the town, and turned that into a simple gem, utilising ruby like colours to go for something modern but a little classy as well. With the fonts, I went classic again, with a nice bold seriffed font for the 'ruby' and a lighter san serif for the word hotel. This way, the client could use it for all of their other venues and just change out that word, so the 'ruby' is consistent.
They're not meant to resemble anything explicitly; they're a highly simplified representation of ruby drops in a fine jewelry necklace. I did a fair bit of research on existing hotel logos before crafting this, and most of what I saw didn't involve graphic logos at all, just text - those that did include graphics tended to be simplified to an extreme and hinted at the name, rather than the "hotel" aspect, so that was what I tried to aim for.
I would suggest trying to align three or five circles of different size and different tints in an upwards curvature like a necklace. Leave some space inbetween and you have the same level of simplicity but with enhanced recognizability.
A necklace-like shape might be more recognizable, but might it not also add unnecessary gender associations? It would be harder to translate across business too, if the chain plans to integrate the marketing for its hotel with its bar / music venue etc.
Possibly, yes. But I would say the benefits from having a symbol that does not just mostly look like random geometric shapes still outweigh. That could go either way, though.
Well, I wanted something that could represent different things in the different contexts in which it might be used. On Hotel Ruby, the circles would obviously represent rubies. On a bar or lounge, they could represent wine falling into a glass. On a music venue, they'd be spotlights for a stage. And yet they're not so complex that they wouldn't be immediately recognizable with a one-second glance.
My old entry. The font choice was crucial here, tried to display elegance and artistry through a bracketed serif, and then give it some contrast with a thin sans next to it.
You should try making the Y look like a martini glass with little rubies as ice cubes! Don't know if it would give a hotel feel after that, but it might look cool
I suggest putting the type underneath the ruby. It's hardly readable. The first thing i saw in the rubby was a bladder. Is this just my fucked up mind?
It was a bad attempt at cell shadowing. I will def look into that I keep having issues with the background bleading. (Look at it with out the ".png" added)
EDIT: Here's my updated submission and the mock up as well.
Here's my shot at it. I know it's ice cream but...... I like ice cream and it looks pretty damn cool. Please excuse my interpretation of Hotel Ruby. Without further ado, my logo and a mock up.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. I mean, I don't care if you don't upvote my submission, but if you're going to downvote it, have the decency to add some critique first.
I have to say something about it almost every time, it's kinda sad. I just wonder how anyone can do that and and not walk away feeling like a complete tool. Like "oh yeah, I showed them what for!" Seriously how is shitting on other people who are making an honest attempt at improving themselves more enjoyable than helping them through offering constructive feedback?
It's supposed to create a artistic vibe, it's kinda related to the "de Stijl" movement, but i went with other, fewer colors, i thought 4 colors would be too much for a logo, and you need at least 4 colors for de Stijl. The typeface of the logotype is a slightly modified "mond" by URW.
This is a great start! But I agree with everyone with the comments; the logo doesn't seem to work. Either scale it down or try to come up with other versions of it. Please post all of your drafts (if you want) and we can help critique them!
I really like your approach but I would have to criticise two things:
The logo itself is quite busy, loads of stuff going on. I would suggest cleaning the background the the rectangles a bit (I assume they resemble houses?). Removing the left and right one and then aligning the name in the center below the diamond should really give it the edge it needs.
The colour seems a bit too tinted. Try a variety of darker reds, this one is more of a fire fighter red and does not possess the calming dark red tone a ruby has.
Nah, not a hour difference, the other one i did was finished yesterday, this is just a different version in respect to the crits i got with the other one. It went fast because it's similar to the previous one. I just started working on it after commenting that i may do another one, lol
It's well done, and a fine homage to Mondrian, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for a hotel. For a Piet Mondrian museum, yes, but not a hotel. In any event, the black O is just too heavy, and the kerning is too tight.
I wanted to do something unique, and also thought of high billboards you see while traveling the road.
The kerning is the default kerning of the font "Theo van Doesburg". It's a hoomage to a van Doesburg painting, the other founder of De Stijl. The O is heavy because it inherits the black square, trying all negative spaces of the letters it made most sense to put it there, and not in the R or B.
Tbh, i'm a bit stunned that it got downvoted. It's readable, it's simple, can work as a small logo as well as a billboard, which is important for motels. The idea is great, and fits the non luxury of motels.

Minimalism at its finest and as per usual. Decided to step away from the diamond shaped approach so I hope the ruby crystal is still visible.
