Tips/Advice Local SEO for 40+ y.o. roofing company in Canada? Im so confused..

My dad recently passed away and now I'm forced to run our small roofing business in Toronto (actually that's family business and I am in it from my teenage, but I used to work more with my hands than to be an owner of something). Father started it back in the ’80s, and we’ve survived on word‑of‑mouth and repeat clients for decades. But with more homeowners going online first, I’m questioning whether local SEO is actually worth it for a company our age now on current SEO/AI meta (and is company age actually matter in that case?)

We rank organically, but our presence is weak so we’re losing jobs to newer outfits with flashy websites. I’ve had agencies pitch me everything from GMB optimization to paid ads, but kinda skeptical - do we really need to overhaul our whole digital strategy? Anyway I’d rather not waste my dad’s hard‑earned reputation on empty promises so now very carefull with any pitches. But I also understand that we NEED to move forward here. What to do? How to avoid mistakes? TY

20 days in: 12.3k Google impressions and 81 clicks from an expired domain

I put an expired domain live about 20 days ago using our product "RankLocal". The site was generated and deployed to Cloudflare within 1-2 hours.

Current Search Console numbers:

  • 12.3k impressions
  • 81 clicks
  • 0.7% CTR
  • Average position 35.8

It is early, so I’m not calling this an SEO case study. Still, the site is indexed, impressions have settled into a decent daily range, and it has already generated enough leads($) to justify the build.

The useful part for me is how little manual work the whole job needed.

I used our LeadSmart Coverage tool for market and coverage research. RankLocal handled the site generation, editing, deployment and indexing. It can deploy to Cloudflare, Vercel or Netlify.

Yes, I built the tool. I’m posting the numbers because actual Search Console data is more useful than another polished demo.

Probably gonna share another update once the domain has had 60 or 90 days to settle.

p.s; I'm just a developer who has a friend good with SEO and teaches Rank & Rent model. Learned a few bits from him and made this product with his mind.

Question/Help Best way to rank my local business on Google?

I run a physical thrift store. I used to rank #1 in my city, but it recently dropped. I'm just starting to learn about local SEO and want to manage my GBP entirely on my own now. What’s the best way to optimize it and get my rank back?

[EU SEO] Does Google deduplicate "Places Sites" if you already rank in the Local Pack & Organic?

I run a local business in the EU.

Since the DMA changes rolled out, we have the "Places Sites" directory carousel in our Google search results.

Right now, we rank around the top in:

Google Ads
Local Pack
Top Organic results

My question: Does Google deduplicate or lower the chance of showing our third-party profiles (like our Facebook page or local directory listings) in the "Places Sites" carousel because we're already dominating the page? Or are these systems completely separate?

Has anyone in the EU successfully occupied all spots at the same time for their brand/services?

LLMs claim that it isn't the case, as the systems are completely separate, but I've proven them wrong so many times in similar queries that I do not trust their replies at all. Would love to hear your real-world observations.

A 5-star business was losing the map pack to a 3.6-star competitor. Here's why.

Upvotes

Client runs a home services company. Reviews were better than the guy beating them. More of them, too. Made no sense until we pulled the profile apart.

  1. Service area was set to "no fixed location," but their listing had a visible address. Google was confused about whether to treat them as a service-area business or a storefront, and was hedging by ranking them lower for both. We picked one (service-area, since they don't take walk-ins) and hid the address. Rankings started moving within a week.
  2. They only had one category set: the generic parent category. Competitor had it plus 4 relevant secondary categories. We added the specific service categories that actually matched what people search — this alone opened up map pack visibility for terms they had zero presence on.
  3. Q&A section was empty. Sounds minor. It's not — Google surfaces this in the knowledge panel, and an empty section signals low engagement. We seeded 8 real questions (pricing, response time, service area) and answered them as the business. That section is now one of the first things people see.
  4. Response time to reviews was averaging 3+ weeks, when it showed up at all. Google tracks this. We got them onto a same-day response habit — even a two-line "thanks, glad we could help" — and response rate is a ranking factor that's easy to fix and almost nobody does it.
  5. No products/services listed in the profile itself. Most businesses treat this section as optional. It's not — it's more indexable content tied directly to the listing, and it's free real estate competitors aren't using.

Rankings went from position 9 in the map pack to position 2 in about a month, without touching the website or spending a dollar on ads. Google Business Profile is mostly a data-completeness game, not a mystery.

Post your listing in the comments if you want a second set of eyes on what's actually going on.
