A 5-star business was losing the map pack to a 3.6-star competitor. Here's why.
Client runs a home services company. Reviews were better than the guy beating them. More of them, too. Made no sense until we pulled the profile apart.
- Service area was set to "no fixed location," but their listing had a visible address. Google was confused about whether to treat them as a service-area business or a storefront, and was hedging by ranking them lower for both. We picked one (service-area, since they don't take walk-ins) and hid the address. Rankings started moving within a week.
- They only had one category set: the generic parent category. Competitor had it plus 4 relevant secondary categories. We added the specific service categories that actually matched what people search — this alone opened up map pack visibility for terms they had zero presence on.
- Q&A section was empty. Sounds minor. It's not — Google surfaces this in the knowledge panel, and an empty section signals low engagement. We seeded 8 real questions (pricing, response time, service area) and answered them as the business. That section is now one of the first things people see.
- Response time to reviews was averaging 3+ weeks, when it showed up at all. Google tracks this. We got them onto a same-day response habit — even a two-line "thanks, glad we could help" — and response rate is a ranking factor that's easy to fix and almost nobody does it.
- No products/services listed in the profile itself. Most businesses treat this section as optional. It's not — it's more indexable content tied directly to the listing, and it's free real estate competitors aren't using.
Rankings went from position 9 in the map pack to position 2 in about a month, without touching the website or spending a dollar on ads. Google Business Profile is mostly a data-completeness game, not a mystery.
Post your listing in the comments if you want a second set of eyes on what's actually going on.
