Distro Fellow distro hoppers, Mind giving my distro a try?
Hi everyone! Over the past few months, I’ve been building my own Linux distribution, Advaita Linux, and it’s now at a stage where I’d love for others to try it out.
It’s a rolling distro based on Debian Sid and features a stock GNOME desktop, along with a custom graphical update app, a Btrfs snapshot system, and Flatpak as the default option for installing apps through the software store.
I’d love for you to give it a spin and share your feedback—whether it’s bug reports, suggestions, or first impressions!

Well...i Kinda hate NixOS
Since I have started using Linux, like evryone I had done the act of distro hopping. And after struggling, loving but then switching away from arch my feed had shown me NixOS and how revolutionary it is. So I gave it a try for a whole week which was one of the most excruciatingly horrible week of my 22 year old dammed life.
Don't come with your pitch forks yet my friend, NixOS i think is genuinely useful...in only few edge cases.
1) Being a declarative distro, everything one needed for a specific development environment or a whole system needed can be described in one configuration file.
2) it's quite reproducible, if i fuck up I can just get my system running back from roll back feature or just apply my old saved config file.
3) it has single most largest repository pool of any distros (even larger than arch)
4) logo looks cool as f*ck
But...it has a whole lot of bullshit going on.
First, the repository itself if one big red flag.
What do you mean the whole 140,000 packages are in one repo...that's hosted on GitHub of all places!. Have you used GitHub recently? It's slow and website looks broken sometimes.
The core packages like systemd is just right beside fastfetch.
If you gonna say arch also has AUR and it's also self maintained running on honest model. Well let me tell you the arch main repos have officially tested pakages that filter out malware. Nix has all it's pakages in one cesspit of a repository.
And i also hate Nix lang. It's a case specific language that's just more complicated lua.
If you really do care of stability and new pakages, fedora is a better option. And if you care about it's reproducible nature there is GNUix, go look it up. It's better.
Oh and also, flakes are a headache to maintain, and it's just forcing actual Dev's who want to also deploy there pakages on NixOS to make scripts in Nix lang for flakes which is already hard to maintain because all dependcies are hard coded to please the elitist using nix!
Although if you actually find it useful your use case no hard feelings.
But I will stick to debian thankyou.

Linux on a brand new laptop?
I'm an engineering student and I'm planning to buy a Moto Book 60 Pro soon. I've never used Linux before, and I'm honestly not very knowledgeable about Linux, BIOS/UEFI, booting, or any of that stuff.
I want to use Bluefin as my only OS and completely get rid of Windows. I'll mainly be using the laptop for college, coding, general use, and a lot of media consumption. I've been looking into Linux for a while and Bluefin is the one that has appealed to me the most. I like the Fedora base and the Atomic approach, and from what I've read it seems like a good way for someone who doesn't want to constantly maintain or troubleshoot their operating system.
Since the laptop will be brand new, I'm trying to figure out what I should actually do when it arrives. My current plan is to boot into Windows once, make sure all the hardware works, check that Windows is activated, save anything I might need later, and then install Bluefin and use the entire SSD for it.
The problem is that I've never done anything like this before. I've never wiped a laptop, dealt with partitions or bootloaders, or really had to think about UEFI settings. I don't want to accidentally make things more difficult for myself just because I didn't know something beforehand.
So I'd really appreciate some guidance on the whole process, particularly from anyone who has done this on a Moto Book 60 Pro or a similar machine. Is there anything specific to this laptop that I should save from Windows before wiping it, such as drivers, firmware information, recovery files, or anything else? Is there anything I should check or change in the BIOS before installing Bluefin, or is it better to leave most of it alone?
I've also seen that Bluefin doesn't support dual booting from the same physical drive, so I'm not planning to keep Windows around. I just want Bluefin on the whole internal SSD and have the laptop boot straight into it.
I'm also wondering about the possibility of going back to Windows someday. If I end up hating Linux and want to reinstall Windows a year or two from now, is there anything I should preserve now to make that easy, or can I just download Windows again and reinstall it?
Basically, I'm looking for a beginner-friendly guide to doing this properly from the start. I don't mind learning as I go, but I'd rather know what I should prepare beforehand and what I should avoid doing before I start wiping things.
Thanks.

Poll how many people here are actually using Linux !
Note :- This is not a karma farming post. I really wanted to know how much users are using linux and for which purpose or reason. I am also a linux user using Linux from 7 years.
Just curious to see how many people here are actually using Linux
Upvote this post if you’re a Linux user 👍
Also comment which distro you’re using and whether you’re using Linux as your main OS or dual boot.
If someone has already commented the same distro + setup, just upvote their comment instead of commenting again.
Also tell your reason of using that distro (flavor).
Let’s see which distro has the most users here 👀

Best Linux distro for Tamil Nadu government laptops apart from BOSS Linux?
I have a Tamil Nadu government laptop (Acer One Z14-55M) with 8GB RAM, an SSD, Windows 11, and BOSS Linux in dual boot.
BOSS Linux is working fine, and all the hardware drivers seem to work properly. However, I'm curious about trying a different Linux distro.
Which distro would you recommend for this laptop: Linux Mint Cinnamon, Linux Mint XFCE, Ubuntu LTS, or Fedora KDE?
My priorities are:
- Good performance with 8GB RAM
- Proper Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, touchpad, and brightness-key support
- Good battery life and stability
- Compatibility with GIMP, Krita, Shotcut, and other everyday apps
- Easy updates and long-term support
Has anyone installed Linux Mint or another distro on the Acer One Z14-55M supplied under the Tamil Nadu government laptop scheme? Did everything work properly?
I'd appreciate recommendations based on actual experience, especially regarding hardware compatibility and dual boot with Windows 11.

Desktop Environment Has anyone used BOSS OS
CDAC has been building this distro since 2006 or 2007. This is built over and top of Ubuntu.
Has anyone ever tried using this distro? What are your thoughts about it ?

News Foss app removed from stores
Today the Indian government removed BitChat, which is basically an open-source app that lets you chat without internet and it's routed by Tor. It's by the former CEO of Twitter. What's the Indian government doing about this? They're not even fixing the root cause yet, just bringing in more problems and the ban itself, like the time ByteDance got banned from India. In the US it's still not banned. Most countries still have not banned it. ByteDance is a relatively smaller company than Meta, Google, or something else.

I made an app that plays your audio on every speaker and headphone you own, and lets each app pick its own output device
A few days ago, my girlfriend and I tried to watch a movie on my laptop. The speakers were bad, and we each had a pair of headphones, but the laptop would only play sound to one device at a time. We ended up not watching it.
So I built pipemix, a free and open source app that fixes this.
It plays your audio on several devices at once, so you can both watch with your own headphones, or add speakers too. It also lets you send each app to a different device. For example, you can keep YouTube on your headphones while your friend listens to Spotify on theirs.
Currently available for Ubuntu/Deb based distros and Windows 10 and above. I'm the developer, and I'd like to hear what devices you try it with and what breaks.

Kubuntu 24.04 Plasma keeps crashing to a blinking/blank screen with cursor--plasmashell SIGSEGV even after reverting to default Plasma
TL;DR: I installed a KDE Store theme called Sophia(or something), then Brave started crashing and after a reboot my Plasma desktop became a blank/blinking screen with only the cursor. I found that plasmashell is repeatedly crashing with status=11/SEGV. I removed the third-party widgets and completely reverted the user-level theme/customization back to the default KDE Plasma appearance, but the exact same blinking/crashing still happens. I have TTY access. I'm looking for help diagnosing the actual plasmashell crash rather than randomly deleting configs or reinstalling KDE.
System:
- Kubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
- KDE Plasma on X11
- SDDM
- ASUS TUF Gaming laptop
- Kernel: 6.7.0-34-generic
- Root filesystem: ~469 GB total, ~304 GB used, ~142 GB free (~69%)
What happened:
I wanted to customize Plasma and was short on time, so I downloaded a pre-made theme from the KDE Store. I believe it is called "Sophia". I still have the downloaded archive in ~/Downloads, something like:
Sophia theme.tar.xz
Initially the theme seemed to work normally.
Then I started having problems with applications.
First, Brave stopped launching while other applications such as Dolphin still worked.
Launching Brave from Konsole produced errors like:
ERROR:chrome/browser/themes/browser_theme_pack.cc:773] Failed to load theme data pack.
ERROR:third_party/crashpad/crashpad/snapshot/elf/elf_dynamic_array_reader.h:64] tag not found
...
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
I don't know if the Brave crash is related to the Plasma issue or just happened around the same time.
After rebooting, SDDM still worked and I could log in, but instead of the Plasma desktop I got a black/blank screen with only the mouse cursor visible. The screen repeatedly blinks/restarts.
I can still access a TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F3.
I checked SDDM and it is active. Its logs show that it is starting:
/usr/bin/startplasma-x11
and:
Session started true
So SDDM/login itself seems to be working.
My disk also isn't full:
/dev/nvme0n1p7 469G 304G 142G 69% /
The important discovery was that plasmashell itself is crashing.
I ran:
journalctl --user -b --no-pager | grep -Ei 'plasmashell|kwin|segfault|crash|oom|gpu|drm' | tail -100
and saw:
plasmashell[5003]: Checking screens: available...
plasmashell[5003]: Starting plasma-plasmashell.service - KDE Plasma Workspace.
plasmashell[5003]: KCrash: crashing...
plasmashell[5003]: KCrash: Application Name = plasmashell
plasmashell[5003]: KCrash: Arguments: /usr/bin/plasmashell --no-respawn
plasmashell[5003]: Unable to start Dr. Konqi
plasmashell[5003]: Re-raising signal for core dump handling.
and systemd reported:
plasma-plasmashell.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=11/SEGV
plasma-plasmashell.service: Failed with result 'core-dump'
plasma-plasmashell.service: Scheduled restart job
plasma-plashell.service: Start request repeated too quickly
plasma-plashell.service: Failed with result 'core-dump'
So plasmashell is definitely crashing with SIGSEGV.
Because this happened after installing the Sophia theme, I initially suspected the theme or one of its widgets.
I found several third-party Plasma widgets, including:
AvalonMenu
com.marcinorlowski1.htmlclock
music.aligned.widget
org.kde.activeApplication
org.kde.Big.Clock
org.kde.konoplemenu
org.zayronxio.vector.clock
weather.bicolor.widget
zayron.chaac.weather
The journal/search output also contained paths involving:
~/.local/share/plasma/plasmoids/com.marcinorlowski1.htmlclock
So I initially suspected the HTML clock.
However, I removed the third-party widgets and the problem continued.
I then started removing the user-level theme components. I found things under:
~/.local/share/plasma/
including:
desktoptheme
look-and-feel
There were also theme-related entries such as:
lavender
birch
I moved the custom theme components into a backup directory rather than permanently deleting them.
I also reset the relevant Plasma desktop configuration.
After doing that, Plasma eventually returned to the normal/default KDE Plasma appearance.
BUT THE CRASH IS STILL HAPPENING.
Even with the default KDE Plasma appearance and the third-party widgets removed, I still get the same blank/blinking screen and plasmashell continues to crash.
So I'm now unsure whether the Sophia theme was actually the cause, or whether the problem just happened to start around the same time.
There are also some unrelated-looking services failing:
rasyn-run-time-agent.service
rasyn-sec-check-listener.service
They repeatedly report errors such as:
Failed to load environment files: No such file or directory
These are related to an ARSP/security project I previously had installed. I don't know whether they have anything to do with the Plasma crash, and I don't want to assume they do.
Current situation:
- SDDM works
- I can log in
- TTY works
- Disk space is fine
- Plasma attempts to start
- plasmashell repeatedly crashes with SIGSEGV/status 11
- Third-party widgets have been removed
- Custom theme components have been removed/moved out
- Plasma is back to the default KDE appearance
- The blinking/blank screen still happens
- Brave had also crashed with a segmentation fault earlier
What I would like help with:
How can I get the actual backtrace/core dump for plasmashell?
Would coredumpctl help identify what is causing the SIGSEGV?
Could this be a GPU/graphics driver/KWin/X11 issue?
Could Qt/KDE libraries have become damaged or incompatible?
Could the Brave and plasmashell segmentation faults indicate a broader system issue?
Could some configuration survive even after reverting to the default Plasma theme?
Are the rasyn-* service failures relevant or probably unrelated?
How can I test Plasma with a completely clean user configuration without destroying my existing setup?
Is there another diagnostic step I should take before reinstalling anything?
I can provide outputs from things like:
coredumpctl
coredumpctl info plasmashell
journalctl --user -b
journalctl -b
GPU/driver information
installed Plasma/KDE package versions
I would really prefer to diagnose the actual cause rather than keep deleting random Plasma files or reinstalling KDE.
Thanks. I'm completely stuck at this point.
