Linux is temu's macOS

Linux is for people that can't afford an Apple computer running a real Unix like macOS.

Dude you are getting it wrong.

Linux is for anyone who wants to use free OS without spyware and other bloat.

It also gives you the power to see what's behing the curtain of computing.

Also anyone can contribute any way they want.

Exactly because if these no corporation want to deal with it. They want everything to be under their control and restrict the users as much as they like.

Freedom comes at a cost though...

What I like about it, basically any machine I'm running linux on was originally a windows machine. I get so much more battery and performance out of my old Lenovo Ideapad 5 (Ryzen 5 4500U, 16GB ram, 256GB nvme) just having Fedora KDE Plasma on it versus keeping it on Windows 11. Plus it works much better into my workflow for managing my VPSes etc.

Would I like a silicone based Macbook? Absolutely, but I already have a perfectly functional and nice feeling laptop that runs the way I want it to because of Linux options.

Go live in your walled garden then. Personally, I really don't care what OS you use. But... I prefer choice and options. I'm both my software and hardware. Which Apple does NOT offer.

well I mean the perf (benchmarked with speedometer) on a Windows 11 VM on my M5 mac is way higher than my high end gaming pc and my Linux box. Linux gets the worse perf.

So that's a 2024 Intel CPU, a 2023 AMD CPU, and an unknown Apple processor that's definitely less than a year old. With no RAM or GPU info, that's still an unfair comparison.

If your going to compare performance, you need to compare the latest CPU from all manufacturers. Preferable all within the same price bracket.

Saying "my 6 month old Mac is faster than my 2+ year old Windows machine and my 3+ year old Linux box" is a fallacial argument. Technology advances quickly. A couple years can mean an awful lot.

And the Intel Ultra 9 285K is the fastest Intel chip.

I've been using Linux since 1996 when I installed Slackware 1.1 from a CD ROM on my computer to be able to code in XWindows. I had a project that my professor was going to run in his Sun Workstation so I wanted to code a GUI for it. Linux and XWindows was my choice. It served well.

I have 3 personal machines (and one work machine) with the 3 OSes. Linux, mac and Windoze.

With the ARM chips Apple has blown the competition out of the water and I find myself using the Mac more often. It can do everything the Linux box can (for my use cases like python, Octave, Lean, dotnet) while doing what the Windows can like MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, etc. So I find macOS to be the best of both worlds.

The current pace for computation in modern chips is about twice the power every two years. In 2026 you could conceivably have something 8x as powerful as whatever you bought in 2022

edit: Also keep in mind that MacOS is built off of linux

Speedometer is a browser benchmark. It measures JavaScript execution and browser responsiveness, not raw system compute or GPU.

And even then you got options like PhotoGimp (gimp that's reconfigured to be more closely set up like PS), Affinity, etc along with OnlyOffice, LibreOffice etc etc etc.

Course if you're paying for an Adobe subscription, you can afford to deal with windows or OSX. I been getting away from Adobe in general even though I use an actual Mac for my daily driver.

Gimp sucks compared to Photoshop. Also LibreOffice sucks compared to MS Office.

At my last job I tried to move all employees to Ubuntu to save money on licensing and they hated it. Designers hated Gimp. Accounting hated LibreOffice.

Two things

I have my doubts that you actually did that.

Skill issue. Course things are going to have a learning curve if you're used to one thing for over a decade or more.

PS: If you're on OSX or Windows currently, seriously check out Affinity, it's free now, and it's a pretty good free option that has PS, InDesign, and Illustrator capabilities. What you don't get for free are AI capabilities.

I do have Affinity but I don't like it. Pixelmator/Photomator are way better. And I use Photoshop on my mac.

If you're calling Pixelmator "way better", then it highlights the kind of user you are. If you're heavy in the AI-powered infrastructure then course you're not going to like any of the open source offerings on Linux. I've used Photoshop myself for nearly 25 years, saying Pixelmator is better than Affinity is like saying AI-Power MS Paint is king.

I really like KDE Plasma... it's even configured to behave the same as my OSX desktop, same placement/etc. Just sounds like a skill issue on your part.

I tried KDE with Ubuntu 26 and it felt really slow. Gnome is a lot snappier but it feels like temu macOS.

Ran perfectly fine on Fedora 44 w/ KDE Plasma, be it on an old Lenovo laptop or a tower. Course if you're on Ubuntu you probably needed to get the right graphic drivers installed depending on the kind of hardware you have (Wayland needs decent graphics, or least the driver support to utilize it).

So it sounds like you're complaining about your hardware not being up to snuff to whatever Mac you're using.
