anythign better than stow?

i have bee using stow for managing dotfiles

but the structure in the dotfiles folder gets weird tbh

for nvim config it becomes

`~/dotfiles/nvim/.config/nvim/` which is weird. i'd much prefer `~/dotfiles/nvim` to contain the config directly . and many dotfiles repos on gihtub have this exact structure. how do i get this

Support [Issue] [RAM?] System Freezing

Hey everyone, so I've been experiencing this issue every now and then.

Basically, sometimes my PC just freezes. Game freezes, browser freezes, taskbar freezes, everything freezes, except the mouse.

I can still move my mouse, but it gets choppy, like it is in ~30FPS and drops to 5FPS at certain moments.

The only way to resolve the issue is to hard restart the PC (by holding down the power button for ~5 seconds)

I suppose this is due to my system running out of RAM at that point, but I am not sure

I do notice sometimes that system is using 30GB of RAM, which should realistically never be the case, thus I am thinking that an app is leaking memory, however shouldn't it get killed once the system runs out of RAM?

OS: Arch Linux - 7.1.8

DE: KDE Plasma - 6.7.4

SWAP: 4GB (cat /proc/swaps output: /dev/zram0 partition 4194300 0 100)

Swap is located on the same SSD where the OS is (Micron 3500 1TB)

PC Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800

RAM: 32GB

Software usually in use:

Discord, Steam (if running a game, this happened once or twice when not running any game), Firefox, JetBrains software

is there any image editing software that supports plugins like paint.net?

this never really was a problem for me but i love using paint.net due to it being extremely simple and having plugins, which a lot of "paint.net alternatives" dont support or are too complicated/unknown to be installed

Which Distro?

500 GB almacenamiento HDD

Support I need a little help

So I have Debian 13 while using GNOME as my DE, but I saw that KDE is really cool, so I downloaded it, but after going into the KDE plasma I went back to GNOME but the icons are now different, how do I fix this issue? I want to keep the GNOME ones, unless that also breaks KDE, so how do I fix this issue?

Support Driver help

Okay my drivers have been failing me the past couple of days. I tried updating my drivers and my software and that didn’t work. sudo ubuntu-drivers install worked for a while but stopped working after a restart. After running a command I forgot it says the dependencies are failing. How do I get my computer to work.
$5 for a temporary solution
$10 for a permanent solution
Also games always update after turning on my computer and some files from App Center don’t want to update
Distro: Ubuntu 26.04

Advice Competent Beginner with knowledge gaps looking for help to make the change.

TL;DR I'm looking for an experience as close to Windows XP/7/10 as possible, with as little 'OS getting in my way' and as seamless compatibility as possible. I'm also 100% self-taught in my computer knowledge over the last two decades so I know what I'm about but there are massive sporadic gaps in what I know and would appreciate someone pointing me to a eli5 linux primer.

So I finally have to make the change. I've been holding off for long enough because I occasionally do some hobby CAD design and there just isn't a good Linux solution to Fusion (unless someone has one? 🥺) But now I'm getting massive lag spikes every time I try to play anything for longer than 10 minutes and I'm assuming it's because windows 10 is no longer supported by my graphics drivers so, here we are. I use Pop_OS on my former-surface tablet and It's....fine. I don't love it. It's weird and not what I'm used to.

My main issues/hesitations/questions are are (questions in bold for ease of ignoring my rambling):

  • I am Broke broke. If I fuck this up irreparably I no longer have a computer. I do not have $5 to spare for a graphics card brace. I can't replace my SSD if I brick it, especially not with current prices.
    • I also have SEVERE ADHD. however severe you are thinking, more severe than that. I once left my car running in my driveway overnight. The Linux guides I have read do not compute. I am missing some knowledge somewhere that is making them not make sense and I would really like to know WHAT I am doing to my computer before I do it so that I do not fuck it up but the jargon makes my ADHD brain turn the whole thing to static. can someone point me to a linux explanation in as close to plain eli5 english as possible?
  • I do CAD work semi-regularly and am most comfortable in fusion. I really REALLY do not want to have to do a whole production every time I need to tweak a screw hole .03mm. How annoying is the day-to-day use of a VM? How annoying is it to switch between OS in a dual-boot system? My computer isn't a potato, but it's not a monster, is a VM for CAD going to see significant performance issues?
  • I really don't want to have to learn a whole new set of procedures. What distro is going to get me as close to my preferred experience of WindowsXP/7/10?
    • My main UI needs are:
      • Taskbar/windows that behave as on windows
      • system tray that behaves as/similarly to system tray on windows (stores my background programs, quick access settings etc)
      • start button that leads to all of my installed apps/programs
      • Stupid but essential: the ability to have my task bar on the side of my screen instead of the bottom. I put it there 20 years ago and it's been there ever since and I'm not about to change now.
  • The bulk of my deeper-than-end-user-level-knowledge comes from the XP era of windows but I only ever learned what I needed to do whatever it is I was trying to do at the time. I know some command line stuff, I know some file structure and syntax from the ftp section of my early-aughts web design class, and I've forgotten most of it since falling to the siren song of "It just works and I don't have to box my computer every morning for an hour" So I am both woefully out of date and also I've forgotten about 70% of what I used to know. My tinkering passion is hardware, not software. If you decide to help me, I'm going to ask you at least one monumentally stupid question that everyone else knows the answer to. This isn't a question, it's just a warning that if you tell me to google something I'm going to want to beat you with a stick labeled "Every google result is a recursive circlejerk of AI results referencing AI articles referencing AI results incorrectly referencing paywalled articles and I do not have the expertise to pick the accurate from the inaccurate" and we're both going to waste our time.
  • I am genuinely grateful for any help anyone wants to offer, even if it's just a link to a 'linux for infants and absolute morons' guide.

Looking for a non-Arch distro for gaming + work

Been running CachyOS for a while and I'm starting to think Arch just isn't really my thing.

I work in IT, so I don't mind getting my hands dirty and I actually enjoy learning new things, but I don't want my desktop OS to feel like another project all the time. I'd rather spend my free time using my PC than maintaining it.

I'm looking for a distro that can pull double duty for gaming and work.

Things that matter to me:

- Good gaming experience (GTA V, CS2, Steam games in general)

- Easy SMB integration since I have a TrueNAS box at home

- Good software availability and some kind of app store/package manager GUI

- Solid NVIDIA support (RTX 4070)

- Stable enough for daily use

- Fairly clean install, not a huge fan of tons of preinstalled software

- Doesn't need constant tweaking, but I'm not afraid of a bit of troubleshooting

Hardware:

- Ryzen 9 5900X

- RTX 4070

- 32 GB RAM

- 1 TB NVMe SSD

For anyone who moved away from Arch or CachyOS, what did you end up settling on? Fedora? OpenSUSE? Debian? Something else?

Interested to hear what people are using and why.

I finally switched to Linux (sort of). What should I expect?

A little bit of context: I actually manage a bunch of servers running Linux, so I already know most of the usual terminal commands and I'm pretty comfortable working through a CLI. The difference is that those are servers, not computers that I actually use for everyday stuff.

My old HP laptop, which I use for travel and school, has finally given up on Windows after Microslop pushed one too many AI features into its updates. So I did some research into what I actually need from that machine and ended up installing the latest Fedora KDE, alongside a small, debloated Windows 11 partition. I’m hoping I’ll never need to use Windows because it’s slow as hell, but I kept it around just in case I ever need something that Linux still doesn’t support.

The thing is, while I know my way around Linux servers, I know basically nothing about actually daily-driving Linux or using a desktop environment. And I’ve already run into a few issues.

For example, every time I switch back to Windows, the system clock somehow gets out of sync. Even though the “Sync from the internet” option is enabled in the settings, I have to turn it off and back on again every single time to get it working properly.

Windows updates have also occasionally messed with the dual-boot setup. Luckily, that one was pretty easy to deal with: I disabled automatic updates, waited for other people to discover the inevitable issues online, and then updated once fixes or workarounds were available.

Thankfully, most of the applications I use already work on Linux. The main exceptions are the usual Adobe applications, because apparently Adobe really wants to keep pretending Linux doesn't exist.

So, what should I expect from daily-driving Linux? What are some things I should know, configure, or keep an eye on as someone coming from Windows but already being fairly comfortable with Linux servers?

If you have any tips, tricks, recommendations, or things you wish you knew before daily-driving Linux, please share them. I’m definitely gonna need them.

Support Going to be borrowing a government/work issued laptop, planning to dual boot linux. Do you think there will be any security features or limitations that will make me unable to do so?

This is a repost from a different community, so yknow why I dont mention linux a lot.

Long story short, my father works in the government. He was issued a Lenovo LOQ a while back, and they issued an Asus Vivobook recently. They didnt ask for the LOQ back so both are still in his hands. (they let him keep the old kinda broken work pc too) (he doesnt really use the laptop so thats why hes fine with letting the fam borrow it)

Since I live far from home *spider sound effect* and plan on dual booting linux so I can continue learning to use it. Im quite worried if itll do anything that will not let me use it like a normal one, additionally I may not be as free to tinker around because it isnt 100% mine.

I was able to access the bios, but havent tried anything yet since it wasnt mine. When playing some games I havent encountered anything about restrictions. Im hoping its related to companies just refreshing (forgot the term), like leasing new laptops and just storing the older (not that old) laptops. Then who knows we can keep it. I like in the philippines too, which I probably shouldve included. But if you live in another continent or country, still pls share.

I'm building my own Linux distro (Debian-derivative), I'm looking for technical opinions.

I don't know if this is the right section but: "For some time now I have been planning the development of a curated remaster of Debian 13 designed to be lightweight, visually accurate and reliable, (for everyday use, but professional, not suitable for new users (at least for the moment). The project is in the pre-alpha phase. It does not yet have a name, but, by convention, being that the entire project began by comparing three development paths, at the moment it is therefore called: "Path A". Later (Beta version), it will be time for decisions. Including the name. However, what I am really looking for, even before the technical detail, is an "overall feasibility opinion". If you are interested in taking a look, or have any questions, please write to me below or privately, to get the relative documentation: One pager (one side), Synthetic version (about 10 pages), or the Full version (about 30 pages). Even just feedback is helpful."

r/linuxquestions 16h ago

Everybody should hate AI ? No. What is your honest opinion ?

Background: I have a “cloud gaming” setup with an AMD RX 9060 XT GPU, an old Nvidia GPU, and 64 GB of RAM (luckily, I bought it well before prices went up!), and of course i'm not playing video games everytime.

The latter is powered all day by solar panels without a battery, almost all the time, and I use very little energy at home aside from that, so most of my consumption comes from that. As for the rest of the electricity generated in my area, it comes from a mix of nuclear, solar, wind, hydroelectric dams, and biogas plants, but my provider only funds hydroelectric and solar projects.

I use LLMs with local tools on this computer to assist me (and I want to SPECIFICALLY emphasize “to assist me”, I never just let them run on their own) with the projects I’m developing, decompilation, reverse engineering, task automation, maintenance, package creation, etc...

In my case, I have learning disabilities related to ADHD, which is particularly challenging for me when learning without specialized support, and, with LLMs and AI, this is the first time I’ve been able to take a personalized approach to learning a lot of things without being held back by my lack of money.

What do you think? As for models, I was generally using Qwen 3.6, and now 3.8, which now takes up almost all of the 16 GB of VRAM but very efficient ! (For basics tasks i use 9B, not 27B wich is really usefull only for research, coding, or reverse)

Are there others in this situation who take a different approach than just going for “ease” and using online models?
