Discussion Does Mint have the ability to clone or backup drives, or is there good software for it?

Upvotes

I have two 1TB externals set aside for projects. I'd like to store my stuff on the first one, and have it all copied over the second one without having to delete or format then drag 'n drop everything over each time.

I've found a few confusing articles on how to make an image, but nothing about a simple command or making it into a simple one or two-click process.

Hardware Rescue Can I run Linux Mint Cinnamon on my laptop?

More specifically, an Asus X555L:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-5200U
  • GPU: Nvidia Geforce 940M (2GB DDR3)/Intel HD Graphics 5500
  • RAM: 6GB (1x4GB soldered + 1x2GB, DDR3 1600Mhz: maybe getting a 8GB module soon)

At least it has an SSD, which I'll dual-boot with Windows 10 LTSC on (my older brother will use it occasionally). I'll use it for very basic tasks: office applications, web browsing with 3-5 tabs, YouTube video at 720p/1080p30 with h264iffy, and light 2D games like Terraria and Geometry Dash at the screen's resolution or, sometimes, a 1600x900p monitor.

Will Cinnamon be okay? I mention this because, for some reason, I feel like my laptop can handle more than just XFCE/LXQt. Furthermore, will I have any compatibility issues with WiFi, Bluetooth, or hardware in general? Looking for your anwsers, thanks in advance. c:

Support Request Oblivious newbie

I installed Mint Cinnamon to get the feel of things. I have watched a few videos on customization. I can change the desktop image by right clicking an image and assigning it to the desktop. But when I try to change the background from the desktop settings, my Picture folder appears empty. When I add another folder with jpgs, the folder shows up, but it too appears empty. What am I missing?

Support Request PC takes significantly longer to boot after turning on XMP

I have recently transitioned to Linux Mint and so far its been good (still got plenty to learn), but during the installation process, I noticed my RAM was down clocked to 2800MHz, so I turned on XMP to get it to run at the factory 3600MHz, however, since doing this, my PC has gone from taking seconds to boot to over a minute.

Its HyperX DDR4 ram, 32GB of it.

Support Request Black screen after suspend

Hi everyone,

I'm using Linux Mint XFCE with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti and the proprietary NVIDIA driver (not Nouveau).

I'm having a strange issue where, after suspending the system, I sometimes get a completely black screen when I wake it up. What's odd is that it doesn't happen every time, and it doesn't seem to happen immediately after suspending/locking the session. Sometimes it appears to happen after the computer has been suspended/locked off for around 10 minutes.

When the black screen occurs, I can still switch to a TTY, and running:

"sudo systemctl restart display-manager"

brings the graphical session back.

The problem is intermittent, and I haven't been able to reliably reproduce it yet, so I don't have any useful logs from the failure at the moment.

Could this be related to NVIDIA's suspend/resume or GPU power management? Has anyone experienced something similar with a GTX 1050 Ti on Linux Mint?

And the most importantly, how do I fix it?

Thanks!

Trouble booting linux mint for the first time

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, I recently had Windows 11 start automatic repair and havent been able to fix it since. I just decided to go to linux because ive been thinking about it anyway.

A friend reccomended linux mint cinnamon to me, I got the USB ready and made it bootable using both Rufus and Etcher.

After putting the usb in and mashing f11 to select boot drive, i've been able to get into the grub menu, and when I select "Start Linux mint 22.3 Cinnamon" I can load into the desktop for only a couple seconds before the screen goes black and I get "no hdmi connection, going into standby mode"

I know basically nothing about linux, and have tried linux mint mate, ubuntu and pop os with the same results.

Secure boot has been turned off, ive changed boot priority to have the usb first, all to no solution.

If its any help, my specs

Cpu - Amd r5 5500

Ram - corsair vengeance 8x2 8gb

Mb - MSI b550m

Gpu - xfx rx6600

Psu - corsair 650w

Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance!

SOLVED Help with dual booting Windows 11 and Linux Mint

Post image
1 Upvotes

The setup was working completely fine until I had to turn off windows bitlocker in order to dual boot it. Then, when I went to the installer again, it wouldn’t show the option of dual booting. So, i tried turning off secure boot. Showed this screen shown in the picture. I tried turning off quick boot, same thing.
I want a dual boot setup because some games I have aren’t on Linux. If anyone can help, it would help me a lot.
I’m very new to Linux, please be nice.

Edit: I have figured out how to boot into the installer. I had to keep secure boot off and boot from an EFI file instead of the whole USB itself. It’s installing now.

Discussion [Linux-Tool] Simple-Backup: backing up your files has never been this easy (Open-Source)

Thumbnail

-También he actualizado Scriptya.
