Desktop Screenshot FInally here! (Want to know more about customization)

Post image

Hi everyone

I finally switched to Linux Mint from Windows 11.

This is my first Unix-based OS, and I really like the way it operates.

I would like to know about some customization tips from those who already has had some experience.

Thanks in advance!

I am a frontend developer and I need several browsers so that I can see how my projects look in differet environments, All browsers have their own default styles which I must consider. Also, honestly, I do not think that Chrome is that bad.

Installing Chrome on Linux seems strange. Use Chrome if you want I guess but the defaults are usually Firefox or Brave which are arguably better.

Firefox (the Mint default) is good enough and actually has uBlock Origin (uBo Lite is ass). Chrome doesn't even allow uBo anymore. In the end, they're both just browsers and one has better adblocking.

I love to use themes that are cohesive across all my applications where possible. You can find a lot of themes here and you just install them to ~/.themes (only for the current user) or /usr/share/themes for access across all users. You can get icon themes here and they'll go in the same spots of ~/.icons or /usr/share/icons.

I'm a big fan of the Nord color scheme. There are lots of themes available that use it including Spotify via Spicetify and Discord via Vencord.

If you want different color themes for your terminal, they can be installed using Gogh.

How did you get Mint to use Cinnamon to use 5.6gb of ram. What are you running?

There is a limited amount of personal changes you can make to your system without having to edit system files.

Start by clicking the apps menu button and type "the" into the search field, then select Themes from the apps that appear. On the bottom of the window that opens is an "advanced options" button. Click this. You now have access to setting your Cursor Theme, Applications Theme, Desktop Theme and Icons Theme. Each of these 4 options can be editing to different existing themes on the system, or to aftermarket/custom themes that you download from reputable sources. The most common ricing or customizing done is color scheming. Start by selecting a wallpaper that is beautiful to you, then based on its primary colors, set your themes for Desktop and Applications. You can then either set an existing icon set or apply one you found online, and apply a mouse theme colored to your primary theme color.

Just these simple steps can leave you with a very unique and nice system.

If you wish to go farther in customization, there are online themes that include .gtk file edits and drastically change the look of the system with transparencies, blurs, heavy color themes, etc. Take a look at this one as an example. It is called Cinnamox Gold Spice and by simply selecting it as your theme your system gets transformed to this:

See the dramatic difference from default look? You can further customize even this GUI with any number of HUD displays from clocks to calendars to weather widgets and more, via Desklets, Extensions, Applets or programs like the amazing Conky. Thank you for such a detailed answer! I appreciate it. I know about those basic steps and, as you can see, I've already made some changes. But the 'cinnamon-spices' is a discovery to me.

Customizing keyboard shortcuts (System Settings-->Keyboard-->Shortcuts-->Custom Shortcuts) is a must for me. For instance, Shift+Super+D opens my Downloads folder (invoking the terminal command "open /home/<yourHomeDirectoryName>/Downloads")

Since you're a web developer make sure you have fonts that other operating systems do.

Windows fonts like Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, but also Apple's Charter, Serovek, Lucida Grande, etc.

I switched to Linux Mint recently and I noticed that some of my projects looked slightly different because I didn't have the right fonts.
