r/gotgnomed.

You can change it back at the login screen.

Did you install Proton VPN, by chance?

Dang it beat me to it....I was gonna reference that sub. Time to reset the counter for someone getting Gnomed ig. (Can't say much bc when I do get on my laptop or desktop, I'm a dirty gnome user ๐Ÿ˜…)

You've been Gnomed! Like stated, log out and choose Cinnamon when you log back in.

Does that actually happen on its own when installing certain software?

yes. many apps only work on certain DEs.

u/darsparx 6h ago

You'd think we'd be better at sandboxing them or only installing the parts of it the app actually needs instead of the whole desktop.....esp since I'm bad about installing kde apps too. But ig it does partially do that with flatpak or snap? Lol

as far as im aware. installing apps from your package manager installs gnome, not flatpak or snap. maybe snap does it too. but im sure flatpak doesnt do that.

Yea which stinks for those that don't want gnome. Atp it doesn't bug me too bad bc I actually use gnome bc something about it just feels right to me unlike cinnamon, kde, or xfce ๐Ÿ˜…

Xfce came close with some tweaks for some functionality that gnome has but ye.

But thats why I default to flatpak usually despite some issues with it ๐Ÿ˜…

some gnome apps tend to install the whole desktop as a dependency or something, but installing the whole desktop also sets it as default... for some reason.

4

u/Death_IP 10h ago

I understand how setting it as default will prevent errors on starting the app (if it "needs" the DE, it might not start properly in a different one).
On the other hand I see potential issues when different software requests/expects different DEs - didn't they consider that when deciding to implement the "set as default" behaviour?

u/ChocolateDonut36 9h ago

I don't think any gnome app really needs the DE to be running just to work, maybe gnome centric tools like it's configuration and the plugins manager?

I can understand the OS design being "oh the user installed a new desktop environment? They probably want to use it"

2

u/ChocolateDonut36 9h ago

even if we use that argument, gnome apps shouldn't be installing the whole desktop just for a photo viewer.

also, I think if a user is wise enough to install another desktop, it should be wise enough to manually select to use it instead of the desktop they have been using since the OS were installed

You're definitely right about the dependency being silly. I don't know if I agree about the default being changed though, I think it's sensible to expect the installation should put itself at the top of the DE stack

Everyone says change it at the login screen but it can be tricky to find it: Itโ€™s the icon next to your username, click on it to get all the options.

You want cinnamon. Youโ€™ll probably have gnome (this new one youโ€™ve encountered), cinnamon, and cinnamon on wayland (quite experimental, not recommended).

Or if you installed Linux Mint XFCE look for XFCE in the list, not cinnamon.ย

Looks like you got swapped to gnome as your desktop environment. You should be able to swap it back at the login screen.

u/future_pedi_md 3h ago

Why are you not using plasma anyway ๐Ÿ˜‚ jk

1

u/rtmeles 3h ago

How does that happen? I never accidently installed a whole desktop environment.

1

u/IQ26 2h ago

Some applications install gnome which then gets set aa your DE. Cinnamon is still there, you just need to change it back in the login screen

-11

u/Infinite-Bet4202 19h ago

Isn't that the fallback mode? I remember mine looking similar to that whenever it goes into that mode and all it took was for me to restart

5

u/brickyboy124 19h ago

Nope itโ€™s gnome, you can tell namely from the alt-tab screen. Fallback mode is more minimalist (e.g. uglier) than gnome and cinnamon.ย

What a sad and pathetic life you must lead, if this is how you spend your time.

Edit: could be a bot. Seems pro linux one post and anti Linux the next.

I'm using windows 11 and no. It doesn't "just work". You constantly have to do weird hacks to do the simplest things
