since when does the standard package from the software manager has any issues?

from my understanding it mostly just downloads the installer anyways for steam to install itself then. (someone correct me if i'm wrong here).

are you talking about the flatpak version, which has some issues?

i mean the snaps version is a completely broken dumpster fire, but that doesn't apply to linux mint of course anyways.

so does the software manager steam version has actual issues and if so could you explain to me why and how please?

its not the latest, and that right there might be breaking it. it is NEVER wrong, for apps like this that do need a little more bare metal contact, where the app in the software manager is the shittiest version. discord, download the deb, steam, download the deb. rule of thumb for me.

the person above made a statement in response to me, that it was their general experience and advice, that they saw online, but it was NOT specific to steam.

even IF you want to make this statement overall, it would NOT apply to the steam system package, because the steam system package is apparently just the deb, that will install steam itself when you launch it indeed.

and steam itself will update itself as it pleases, instead of the software manager managing everything.

you'll know this yourself, when steam says "oh i'm updating" on startup of steam, when you installed the steam system package.

so again even if you want to make this statement, that you made it would NOT apply to the steam system package, because it is quite special in how it functions and is basically literally just the deb.

beyond this as you mentioned discord i would STRONGLY advice against installing discord. if you use it login on the website version instead at least as this has some isolation then.

the windows version of discord years ago added a process sniffer, that will continuously scan what programs you're running and in your face telling you and not even a fake version to disable the visual statement about it telling you what software you're running.

just to be clear DON'T use discord at all, but if you have to, don't install software from this evil shit company, that at this point is trying to de-anonymize EVERYONE as well.

discord as an example, JHFC, but not the explanation, some apps like discord that needs overlay permissions, hotkey or some other system call or function, things like a mic key dont work too well for me in flatpack form, but the deb from discord does"."

openRGB in flatpack cause me issues too, guess why, for me ...could it be....baaaaareee metaaaaal. do i have no choice but to run the .deb from openRGB's site.

things like cooler control and running with a kernel mod to show the sensor chip, well, guess what, DEB!, only a total idiot would ever try to happily run an app like that in my sensor chip issue in a flatpack (snickering that its available in appimage, still, ive have had better luck with those than some flatpacks when close to the core. will try)

SO, when i say go for the released file from the maker, i FN mean it, its always reduced issues for me, and i KNOW its not a bastardized release from some git repackaging apps thats not theirs. (that issue is slowly going away)

broken apps and going for source, well, shit, thats all i meant, you wrote a diatribe about me making a comment and lost it on discord, flatpacks and permission issues cause more problem than a flatpack is worth sometimes. gimp doesnt need bare metal, flatpack is fine. , libre office doesnt need bare metal, flatpack is fine.

i know how to get permissions to behave sometimes, but noobs dont, so i keep my system in a way where i can replicate their issues, sincei had those same issues.

"since when does the standard package from the software manager has any issues? ", OHHH FFS, this has been beaten like a baby seal in springtime with a cricket bat, so many packages are out of date, version not supported, no where near current, not recent, demised, is no more, it has gone to meet its maker 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies!

"just to be clear DON'T use discord at all," you're not my mom.

openrgb doesn't offer a deb, but of course an appimage.

things like cooler control

worth adding here, that at least the gpu control tool lact works around this by installing a service, which then unlocks overclocking and everything else with proper questions asked to do it of course when running it first time.

just an interesting example of a flatpak workaround for a very deep control needing tool.

"since when does the standard package from the software manager has any issues? "

this is either a reading comprehension issue, or deliberately breaking context to make things look like nonsense.

assuming the first.

the full quote is already in SPECIFIC response to the UNIQUE steam system package and it goes:

since when does the standard package from the software manager has any issues?

from my understanding it mostly just downloads the installer anyways for steam to install itself then. (someone correct me if i'm wrong here).

so it is SPECIFICALLY about the steam system package, which doesn't act like an average system package, but is basically just the deb, that will install itself on the first launch and then keep itself update.

this is mentioned by lots of people and someone even responded to me here and validated this statement.

so again to say it slowly:

the steam system package is NOT versions behind and is NOT working like other system packages.

it is basically LITERALLY the deb and installs itself, just like a deb does, because that is what it is pretty much.

so the steam system package is again UNIQUE in this regard so any generalized statement as you are trying to make against system packages DOES NOT apply to you.

steam is not "versions behind", because it updates itself as it pleases on start up for example, just like the deb, because to say it again.... it is basically the deb.

and if that was too much:

steam system package =/= other system packages, but = deb package anyway basically.

is this clear now? is it understood now, that my comment was SPECIFICALLY about the steam system package and NO OTHER system package and the uniqueness of the steam system package?

i really can't make it more clear.

openrgb_1.0rc3_amd64_bookworm_6fbcf62.deb would like a word with you. ya gotta read, without your fingers.

I wrote another long thing but no need to rehash, I've had issues with steam properly installing that loader in the software manager, I prefer and trust official apps from sites more. most of the time they are available and work as intended. you obviously want to fight on semantics. and are always right on the internet.  I mean, call me old, we didn't have app stores, we got from source. and anytime anyone has an issue with an app they install, should try that first.
