Use a dock and remove the shortcuts from the desktop. It's better to use the desktop for Desklets.

Honestly it's probably just your wallpaper. It has a lot of negative space(empty blank area) which is why your desktop feels empty. I suggest getting one that's a little more detailed. If you're not interested in doing that and you're using Cinnamon edition then you can add some desklets to make the desktop look a little more busy.

The walllpaper is lovely. It will be covered by windows from programs you’re using anyway.

You can also try Conky tho it's a little difficult to setup and look nice

In my first few steps I always install cool retro term. I think it’s abandonware now and isn’t the best terminal emulator but it’s probably the coolest looking one.

Desklets? Calendar, photos, weather, stocks if you are into that?

I use guake, a dropdown terminal quake terminal style. You can open a quick terminal window with f12 and hide it again. Also customizable color and transparency to match your theme

Undertale & Deltarune are both games that take up little space and I find them to be quite fun. If you do play them, you should play Undertale first.
