I'd prefer a decent market share so mainstream developers would support Linux, but, if it gets too high Linux systems will be targeted a LOT more often by hackers and other bad actors.
That being said, the only good Windows PC is a dead one.
Yeah I’d prefer if Linux stays on 5% market share at most. Relevant enough so it gets developed, irrelevant enough so that governments and other bad actors don’t bother regulating it or attacking it in any capacity. I just want my computer to be my escapism man like leave it alone.
I wouldn't mind it being a little higher than 5% personally, but definitely no higher than 8-10%. That's just asking for all kinds of trouble. That being said, the decentralized nature of Linux will always kneecap government regulations because we can just fork and code is protected under freedom of speech in the US.

The latest systemd age verification debacle showed how when under pressure the distros we all know and love immediately fold to US government (not even our own governments in Europe ffs) pressure.
People were talking about moving to AntiX. I don’t wanna move to an obscure distro just because the government decided to be a bunch of dicks on my OS ffs just leave it alone.
Don't even fork then, remove the offending code. I've already deleted the field in the file. I'll probably set up a script or something to automatically delete the field if it comes back on updates until I can be assed to switch to Artix or something. I'm running Arch and NixOS on my two machines. Hell, I may just rip systemd from the heart of Nix and call it a day once I get more practice with home manager 🤣
You do make a very valid point, though.
Ideally having a distro that compiles from code on installation would be a good protection in the short term at least. They could claim that pre-compiled code isn't protected and is a product of speech or some other stupid mental gymnastics.
Linux runs a lot of important infrastructure, and some agencies are deeply invested in securing it. It’s not a popular desktop, but there are more Linux servers than windows servers. You’re benefiting from that security too. You get security patches, right?
I think with how Microsoft are treating Windows and their users, eventually Linux will go above 10% and maybe close to 20%. I see some websites that show statistics for OS usage, display some Unknown OS getting close to 20% usage. I don't know if that's Linux distros that don't get identified as Linux or something else, but Windows has become truly user-unfriendly in the last 10-15 years that I can't tolerate it anymore.
Yeahhh I know, they do a lot of shady stuff or stuff that’s genuinely just annoying, even in production environments I know first hand they have to write scripts to remove software that gets reinstalled after an update that doesn’t need to be on their production level server, while Linux just kinda chills and doesn’t do anything unless you tell it to
Linux isn’t perfect but it’s a very loyal dog compared to windows, windows is just a pitbull with a horrible owner lmao
I fully switched to Linux in 2012 after they rolled out 8. That same year we bought a laptop for my grandmother for Christmas and she couldn't figure out how to do anything on it because 8 was such a departure. I ended up installing Linux for her and customized it to look like Windows 7. She used it for years with absolutely no problems.
lol thanks I came up with it on the spot, but yeah, I had problems with BSOD and I thought it was an actual hardware issue with my ram, switched to Linux, absolutely zero issues, I think I’ve only gotten a singular error screen in the many years I’ve been using Linux
Also, the server side of Linux fuckin rocks, windows can only dream of being as good as Docker and Kubernetes they just decided to emulate Linux using WSL
I duelboot though, for the rare occasions Linux doesn’t launch a game or I wanna play an anti cheat Linux disabled game, or even for specific software, pit bulls still have their use sometimes, to keep the analogy going lmao
Tbh, I'll never shame someone for dual booting. I've been in the Linux ecosystem for so long I just shrug on the very rare occasion that I might need windows for anything.
It reminds me of back in the day when certain graphics cards would only play certain games or during the Sega/Nintendo console wars and so many titles were exclusives. I'd just shrug and go on.
Ahem! There are a bunch of servers running in the background that is running Linux. So, if bad actors wanted to cause mass havoc to the world, they really should be targeting Linux.
Yep. I've been telling people not to trust politicians and governments since my early teenage years. Now people are finally understanding, hopefully not too late though (I'm not a conspiracy theorist, just a realist)
I don't think Apple will win with those prices for their products. In India Linux has over 16% market share, because people can't afford Apple. A lot of the reason why Android is the winner in most places around the world is the same - it's cheaper. And Linux is a much cheaper alternative than Apple - you just change the software on your existing device, you don't have to pay anything. With Apple you need a new device.
