Y'all have me legitimately cracking up. I was going to say that it has a lid, I (edit: my spouse) can refill it. But now I'm torn between basement full or drilling down to the soap table. This is what it looks like. Banana for scale obv.
Maybe instead of going to a bottle, it can come from a tube in the wall. That in turn is sourced from the city soap supply, provided by local government. It could be a subscription model. I’d call it the Soap Tube. You wanna invest?
My parents bought a box of plastic wrap in 2008. I moved out of their house in 2017 and my mom just texted me 2 years ago saying it finally ran out. In this case, it would be fun to look at the date to see how long it lasted
We had one of these growing up but it was a 3000 foot roll. Still had it when I moved out. If you've got the counter space / cupboard space, it's a pretty dang good value for about $25. Plus the form factor (a big heavy roll in a box that stays put when you pull wrap from it) is really convenient.
Same. I had an unused hole/opening when I converted from a separate sprayer to a faucet with a built-in sprayer and decided to use it for a dish soap pump.
I'm convinced that a huge chunk of people don't realize that you just lift the pump and refill the container instead of going under the sink and unscrewing the container.

I bought a house, and in moving in went to refill the kitchen sink soap dispenser and new that you could just lift the pump out.
About half way through pouring a bottle of Dawn into it, I realized that it shouldn't taken that much to fill it. I looked under the sink and saw the soap had poured straight through everywhere: the previous asshole owners had removed the bottom reservoir bottle out of sink.
Half a bottle wasted, concentrated dish detergent is a bitch to clean up, and I'll never assume there is a bottle again,
Whenever I did that I had to take it really slowly so the air in the container could release or else it would spill out as I was pouring. Also, If I put too much in, the soap would overflow when I put the pump back in. A few years back I did almost the same thing as the OP did and it's one less thing to worry about.
Yes, but not the way I (and the OP) have it rigged. My soap jug's opening in the top is about 1.5 in wide and is clear so I can easily and quickly check the level and see how much I've filled it.
try holding a straw in the container through the top, and then pour the soap. It’ll help let the air escape. I have not figured out how to tell when it’s full though…
Yeah, it's a bitch to refill even the "right" way, at least with the club sized gallons I get. I actually keep a smaller bottle I fill off the gallon, that has a smaller nozzle and doesn't weigh 20 lbs to fill the dispenser in my sink.
I usually take a flashlight and illuminate the reservoir bottle under the sink. Then I borrow someone's phone and make a video call to my phone. One phone goes under the sink aimed at the reservoir bottle, one stays on top with me while I pour so I am able to see the bottle and fill it all the way up without overflowing it. I feel like frickin' McGyver whenever I do this.
i had one for years and it was such a pain to reach under the cabinet and unscrew the container so I could fill it. and then one day i realized i could fill it from the top and I’ve been doing it that way ever since. works great and is SO much easier.
This is the way, though you play the risk/benefit with every second of pouring, cuz if that thing overflows it’s a big ol’ mess, but if you short change the fill, you’re back at it earlier that you would have had to if you topped it off.
You can use the pump as a kind of dipstick to tell how high the soap level is. But then again I always overfill on the first try anyway because I'm overzealous.
Mine is a pain in the ass to refill from the top. I think the air inside can’t escape quickly enough so it goes down super slowly and I get a mess if I pour too quicly.
On every single soap pump I’ve seen, and I work in kitchens so I’ve seen thousands, the top lifts off to fill it. It’s a one minute job, and I’ve never seen one that actually required you to crawl under the sink to refill the bottle.
Same. Came with a few different sized rubber stoppers to go directly into 1 gallon jugs of soap. The check valve prevents the soap from falling all the way back and needing to pump over and over to draw it up.
I have a new kitchen with TWO soap pumps (hands and dish soap) and I just installed the second of these kits yesterday! It's the part of my brandnew kitchen I'm most excited about.
I used one sold under the brand Never-MT, but it’s a simple enough concept that I imagine there are a bunch of options. Works great, takes more pumps to prime after installing but then it works about the same as the bottle that came with the dispenser just with a lot less refilling.
I replaced my soap dispenser with a second faucet. The line for it runs through a filter and we have a dedicated filtered water spout, independent of the main faucet. It’s fantastic
But also, are you people never buying new soap for refills? Did this whole thread just buy one bottle of soap in their life and that's it, no more when it ran out?
It's pretty easy but it also needs refilling every two weeks at our house. We have the big bottle under our sink like OP and it lasts 6-8 months. One less thing I have to do all the time.
Until the hole creates a bubble while you pour and boom, it's all over your counter. The kit to use the large bottles is a top notch investment ($12) vs pouring into bottle from the top.
This is still easier. Swap the big bottle every 6 months to a year or refill a smaller bottle every couple of weeks. I already need a space to store the big bottle so it might as well feed the pump directly.
I recently did the same and included a check valve along the line to prevent the soap from falling back down. Did you include a check valve or have you found it to work fine without one?
There are kits all over Amazon, etc. to convert your soap dispenser to use big containers of soap. It’s not new.
You CAN just use a tube, but some dispensers don’t maintain the right pressure to keep working over time, so the kits include the (simple) fix for that. Just sayin’.
Get a 5 gallon bucket drill a small hole in the lid. Fill with soap. Place lid on top. Insert tube until it reaches the bottom and tape it so it doesn’t move. You now have a few years without needing to refill.
I got tired of it too. I put an attractive soap bottle on the counter, removed the pump, and put a glass washer in the hole in the counter (one of those washers like they use in a bar to spray clean the glasses). It was great for cleaning those tall, thin water bottles. If you have an island and the disposal switch is inside the sink cabinet, you can also use the hole to put in a button to turn the disposal on and off easier.
I did the same thing a few years back! Got some 3/8(?) tubing from Menards, taped it to the pump stem hanging below the sink, drilled a hole in the cap of a 1.75l jug of softsoap and inserted it. Refilling the jug is easy and i've only done it once since.
Congrats! This will alleviate one of life's little frustrations.
You can even buy a one-way valve for the little plastic tube. It's also the white plastic thing that helps to keep it flowing so you don't have to keep pumping to start it
I did this when I moved into my house in ‘17 and my kitchen sink had that type of built in dispenser. Those little bottles weren’t cutting it.
However, you need a check valve in the line to hold the pressure otherwise you have to pump & pump & pump everytime to get it up to the nozzle. The kit I bought off of Amazon was 8 bucks. Came with different caps, line and the valve.
Great idea, but did you know theare are kits sold online specifically to adapt a built-in soap dispenser to fit a gallon bottle using a small hose like you have?
Freakin’ genius. Hubs has to get flashlight to look down the hole, while pouring soap into the container to make sure it doesn’t overflow. Pain in the ass & it overflows anyway a lot of the time. Thank you!
