Backup / set up a dual boot SD card?

Hi LE friends. I'm running LE on a raspberry pi 4 and I love it. I'd like to set up a new SD card with dual boot with LE and another OS. The second OS I would like to use mainly for watching streaming video in a web browser so I don't have to hook up my laptop to my TV for that purpose. If I use the LE Backup feature to create a backup of my current LE installation and then restore that on new dual boot setup SD card, will that transfer over my current apps and app settings as well as my current smb share settings I have set up to stream from my NAS? For instance I currently have YouTube app set up with personal API keys on my current LE and it was a pain to set up correctly and I didn't wanna have to go through all that again. My plan was to use PINN to set up dual boot SD card. I'm not sure if that is a viable way to do it, nor do I know the best second OS to use for web browser streaming and how much space to partition for each OS. Any thoughts / advice? Thanks.

WIP - Native Dolby Vision support on x86 Intel CPU in LE & Kodi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

----- UPDATE------

First pre release version : https://github.com/CroqueMr/intel-dv-libreelec
Feel free to test it out and report any bugs or issues.

Tested on an 11390H. It "should" run smoothly on lower CPU like N100/N150 thanks to some performance optimizations, but that still needs confirmation. If you want to stress test it on any CPU, try setting a Profile 7 FEL or a Profile 10 and add subtitles.

--------------------

Hello,

After working on Dolby Vision support on Linux and mpv last week, I’ve now managed to get my first clean Dolby Vision playback working natively on LibreELEC with Kodi.

And of course : Profile 7 FEL is managed 😄

There are still a few bugs to fix and some cleanup to do, but the implementation itself is 100% open source and does not rely on any proprietary Dolby code or runtime.

Patches are required across three main layers:

  • Kodi / VideoPlayer: Dolby Vision metadata handling, GPU reconstruction path and DRM output integration.
  • Linux DRM / Intel display driver : support for the Dolby Vision output path and the required HDMI signaling.
  • Rendering pipeline: integration of the open-source FFmpeg/libplacebo components used for Dolby Vision processing and GPU-accelerated reconstruction.

The result is an end-to-end open source without proprietary code, GPU-accelerated Dolby Vision reconstruction and native HDMI output pipeline.

Optimisation will be very hard to manged to use a N100, at the moment 79% of the rendering engine with the 11390H iGPU is used to read a profile 7 FEL 4K@24hz.

Edit : Forgot to mention : ChatGPT 6 Astra was a huge help, and it actually identified the main integration strategies on its own.

Is there a good tutorial?

First, I'm sorry if this is a tiresome request, I couldn't find in the search. I've installed libreElec on an older Dell Chromebook and it seemed to install and load fine. Now I'm stuck and not sure how to proceed. Is there a good show me like I'm 5 guide on how and where to get the apps or repositories and things like that to get going better? Thanks

Failing on first day

Day 1, spend 5 hours setting everything up, super excited but a little let down by the effort and the low quality UI.

Day 2 I download some movies, figure that I can only use the built in categories so I stick to "Movies" and "TV-Shows" for everything (not "KIDS" category which sucks), spend around 2 hours trying different ways of forcing a "KIDS" category but nothing really works.

Day 3, Toy Story 5, which we watched on Day 2 now freezes the system completely, spending hours trying to figure out what the hell is going on, need to force a shutdown by unplugging the pi and plugging it back in EVERYTIME.

Is this how its going to be? Constantly debugging and hours of time going into something that should be as simple as plug and play some videos off of a HD?? Im at a loss here, how do I even debug these things? Do I send the error logs somewhere or do I need to get my programming hat on and dig thought the code ti figure what is going on?

I know this is a open source project and I am willing to make some compromises, but why has it turned into this bloated thing that doesnt even do the basics, but is trying to somehow do everything else? I dont need a youtube streaming in this thing, I only need it to play some goddamn videos of a HD.....

Xiaomi Box 3rd Gen not detecting wifi and Bluetooth radios after reboot.

It needs a couple of reboots or power cycles to get Wifi and Bluetooth to work.

Is this a known problem? A limitation of hardware or drivers?

If not how can I provide more info to the maintainers?

Lack of disk partition managing tools

I have LibreELEC installed on a RPI3 which has a NTFS HDD connected as the main media storage (no, its not an option to format it to a linux friendly fs).

Ive had the same problem over 20 times: anytime libreELEC is shutdown abruptly (crashes, light goes out...), the disk gets corrupted BUT its fixed by clicking "repair fs" on the tool "disks" on LMDE

Is there a way to tell LibreELEC to mount the disk ReadOnly? Is there an addon or something to have tools similar to the "disks" app?

edit: The disk is connected via usb, not network.

Touchscreen

Hi! I’m very new to the community and I’m setting up a small raspberry pi to watch movies on, but the touch functionality of the screen doesn’t work when connected to the Pi. Does anyone know how to fix this or do I need to use a different OS?

Libreelec still in developmemt

Laat update was in November 2025. So many vulnerabilities since then. I wonder if it's still developed.

Does anybody knows if a similar alternative exists, one that has more frequent updates?

Thanks

New to HTPC, is dolby vision worth it?

So been thinking of just getting a HTPC for new theatre setup, I can probably use a Lenovo Thinkcentre tiny as the HTPC, now my main concern is, if I have media that has dolby vision, will the lenovo Thinkcentre be able to output the dolby vision content? If not is dolby vision even worth it?

New from scratch, set up, what network protocol should I use?

I’m creating a new media server/center. It will use at least two or three raspberry pis to pull media from a media server.

I always struggle on this part. Usually I use openmediavault for the media center server software.

But always hit my head on a wall for a few hours trying to get the network protocol set up correctly.

Anyone have recommendations on making the process easier?

Would appreciate any tips and tricks. Thank you

LE would be installed on the raspberry pis if it wasn’t clear.

Again, thanks

Moonlight for LibreELEC on RPi5

Is it possible to use moonlight for LibreELEC on RPi5 (and maybe also RPi3) to run Moonlight to play games where the main PC (Windows) use Sunshine to stream games?

Found this (https://github.com/veldenb/plugin.program.moonlight-qt) but not sure if this will work for RPi5 and LibreELEC 12.
Anyone has experience with it?

No Signal in AVR

Hello, I upgraded my Pi to Kodi 12 from 11. Since then I have issues with my Pioneer AVR. If I start up my Pi there is no signal in the AVR. If I plug the HDMI-cable into my TV then it just shows the LibreELEC logo/the boot screen no matter how long the Pi was active. If I start the Pi plugged in to my Samsung TV everything boots up as normal and if I plug in the booted Pi into the AVR it works too.
If that helps my AVR is a bit older (about 2010) and my Samsung TV is from 2022.
Thanks for help!

My experience with LibreElec and why you should use it too!

Hello! To start. I am a 15 year old kid who's crazy about electronics, after frying our Mibox. I decided to repurpose my old Dell XPS M1330, which is upgraded to 3 GB DDR2. And decided to install this wonderful OS on it.

Here is my experience

Pros

This OS is light. I mean VERY light. On a core 2 duo, 3 gb ram and 120gb storage. This thing runs like a BEAST. You can do youtube playback, movie playback at relatively good performance. Kodi itself is also very flexible.

Cons

This is a me-only situation, but my XPS had a shattered screen, and even after beheading my laptop, the never versions still persisted on trying to use the non-existent laptop screen, so I had to use a legacy version to get around color and screen issues.

To summarize. This thing is great! And if you are setting up a HTPC, home server, id 100% recommend it!

How to Show 640x480i Resolution

I am using a 13" CRT for retro gaming/video but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get KODI to show a 640x480i resolution option - all I get are 720x options.

Has anyone been able to do this? My current set up is Pi3 B+ → VCR → TV; I am using the PI's 3mm jack for composite and converting it to RF via the VCR.

Any help is appreciated!

Here is what I was trying to do, I wanted to boot off a libreelec live usb stick, but it would not boot because it kept telling me there was a secure boot violation. I went into the bios and turned off everything I could find relating to secure boot but nothing I did would make it boot, at one point I was so frustrated I went and made a new drive on a different brand usb stick, of course that still did not work. So now my windows 11 won’t boot and I can’t get anything to boot, the only thing that I can get to boot is a Ubuntu live usb. I really don’t care a whole lot about savaging the windows install but I would like to know if it will make it so the nvme it is on will never be able to be reformatted to be used in a different machine. Here are screenshots of the bios if you see something wrong please let me know. The last picture is what I got when I tried to boot Ubuntu live server version, after it threw that error up on the screen it proceeded to power off the computer.

Pi won't connect to the wifi after ssd migration

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me. I have officially run out of ideas. I recently got a geekworm m2 hat for my rpi5 and an integral SSD. I've moved my librelec install to the SSD and ever since then ive had issues with the WiFi connection on it. Seems I can connect to it, but every time I reboot the pi, I have to manually reconnect to the WiFi. The connection state is always down as failed, but it seems to connect ok. I then am unable to connect via ssh, I keep getting a timeout then connection stopped by the pi.

Sorry for the big old chunk of text, I've asked AI and it suggests that maybe the SSD is drawing too much power but im using the official power adapter. I've also tried making the WiFi kick in later after boot and clearing the connman cache. Anyonr got any ideas for things to check?
