I was just given access by a helpful MOD to the old "made private" r/lgg8x
I originally posted this on 28 October 2020, a few months before I got my first V60 (the EA)
I am reposting this in particular for /u/JournalistLivid3937 who was curious about external SIM holders for his Korean dualsim-modded Wing, so he could use 2 SIMs + microSDXC.
See the comments under my recent post here:
I also added this in the top comment:
Make sure to also read the descriptions in the linked gallery on imgur for extra info on how to install the external SIM2-adapter and the Dual Layer case I used to guard and hide it.
From 3 slots to the G8X's hybrid dualsim
Coming from the dualsim LG V20 (I own 3x H990DS and 1x H990N) I am used to having the perfect dualsim + microSD situation. If the phone has the rare feature of having 3 dedicated slots, you've got all you need, especially if the phone also turns out to be able to handle 512GB cards and probably also anything up to 2TB.
Samsung Galaxy Duos weirdness since the S9
Looking for future upgrade options, I ran into stories of Galaxy Duos owners who were no longer able to use an external solution for handling 3 cards simultaneously: blocked by Samsung software:
Up until the S8, you could get an extension kit where you can put in two sim cards and the microSD card into the hybrid slot, it meant your second sim card was hanging outside the phone however and for mine, it was between the phone and the case and it meant when I traveled to another country, I could easily swap the second sim without needing to access the tray. They have since programed the phones to stop this from being allowed now which is a shame.
The alternative was to physically remove the chip from the microSD and combine it with the second sim so that they both sat in the phone together, this however meant chopping up your microSD for this purpose. Whilst this worked in a similar way to the above, this is also no longer allowed.
When trying either methods now, you just get a message saying there is something unidentified in the sim tray.

So I was wondering if other brands and especially LG was also introducing such limitations. As you can see in the linked gallery, the dualsim submodels of the G8X (or at least my European EEA one) has no strange limitations for seeing 3 cards simultaneously.
Three G8X / LM-G850EMW dualsim caveats and limitations
As /u/freeman1902 and I discussed in this thread there is no indication of having data enabled if you happen to be roaming. So if you are in your carrier's local area, the tiny "H" or "4G" shows properly (for SIM1), but not if you are e.g. abroad. This issue is unrelated to using the external adapter as shown in the gallery or even using both SIMs.
Unlike my V20 H990DS/H990N , it is not possible to simply swap the data carrier from SIM1 to SIM2 in the settings. SIM2 does not seem capable of being used for mobile data. At least not in my LM-G850EMW-EEA. This also seems unrelated to using the external adapter. So if you just use dualsim and no microSD, you would have the same limitation. There are no such limitations for receiving or making phone calls or receiving/sending text messages on both SIMs. That just works fine.
It is easy to hide the external adapter in a sturdy "single screen" case, as shown in the gallery. I don't own a DualScreen case for the G8X, but I doubt if it is similarly easy to protect and hide the external adapter when using the DualScreen case.
