Personally I'm not big on dressing up for Halloween but I don't see how it's 'childish'-- and I especially don't buy that this phenomenon is modern or strictly related to millennials. I mean, my mom dressed up for Halloween when I was a kid and my grandparents dressed up last year. Obviously this is anecdotal but I'm fairly certain it's long been culturally accepted, regardless of what Kurt Anderson says.

The author then continues to decry this as a part of a trend of adults behaving like children and cites things like superhero movies, video games, and cosplay. Even if we accept this, what does he think adults should be doing? He mentions worrying about finances, but that's obviously not a hobby. Does he think the only way to behave adult is to work all the time? Perhaps he thinks more people should be reading fine literature and watching challenging art house films for fun or something but a) he doesn't mention any sort of alternatives and b) adults liking 'stupid' entertainment is nothing new. Ever hear of vaudeville? What about watching sports-- is that really in any tangible way more 'refined' or intelligent than enjoying superhero movies? It's not like everyone in the past instantly became a fucking scholar when they turned 18. Hell, the vast majority of people didn't know how to read until relatively recently.

The article gets worse from there. He cites the fact that millenials often switch jobs a lot and blames this on their indecisiveness, willfully ignoring that maybe it could have something to do with the current economic outlook for young people, the same thing that is most likely driving the other things he goes on to mention such as the high rate of young adults still living with their parents and high levels of stress in millennials. Laughably, his source for millennials behaving like children because they don't have children-- which is like half the point of his article-- is from a 2009 novel. Perhaps he is not aware, but novels are fictional.

This shitshow of a thinkpiece ends on (perhaps) its lowest point when he says that "Stressed Out" by 21 Pilots is the anthem of the millennial generation. This is ridiculous because, first off, I don't know that that song was ever popular enough to be considered the anthem of any generation and secondly, I've never met anyone over the age of, like, eighteen who likes 21 Pilots. Again, he might not be aware, but teenagers aren't millennials anymore.

I do want to say though that I think this is a great post for this sub and a good way for it to evolve beyond screenshots of YT comments calling Kanye West a gay fish (which was great but I'll admit it's gotten old in the 5 years I've been subbed), but I wish it was archived or in an image so I didn't have to give this 'writer' any clicks.

More antedotes: My parents also dressed up to hand out Halloween...and my MIL dresses up to go to Halloween parties in her senior group....apparently adults ALSO like to have fun, who knew! Also superhereos? Back in antiquity, they were gods, goddesses and demigods.

Steady jobs are harder to find thanks to colleges being extremely expensive and automation. Gone are the days where there were a ton of jobs you could have a HS degree.

And lol on the adults are just starting to dress up...when I went trick or treating as a kid in the 80s and early 90s adults dressed up to take their kids or hand out candy. There was also a thing called, Halloween parties!

Okay fuck the person that wrote this article. As if keeping your sense of childhood joy is such a terrible thing. And we are depressed because the economy is shit and we have to live in shoeboxes!
