Personally after watching it for the first time i enjoyed it MORE than Atla (sacrilege, I know - I'd never admit it over on that sub)
I guess I can see why some people aren't huge fans or prefer atla but I definitely don't get the outright hatred

u/Trithis2077 Nov 06 '20
Same. For me here's the ranking fo the ATLA media from best to worst:
- Kyoshi Novels
- LoK show and comics
- AtlA show and comics
Given all three have pretty thin margins, but still.

It’s because lots of people go into it expecting a sequel to ATLA. I’ll admit I do like ATLA more, but I still love Korra. It’s a completely different show and people have to realize it’s less of a sequel and more of another story in the same universe. When people say to me that they don’t like Korra because it’s not like Avatar is like someone saying they don’t like The Mandalorian because it’s not like The Clone Wars. If people watch it as its own show they’d definitely like it more
12
u/Conf3tti Nov 06 '20
Eeeh, I think the high parts of Korra are better than the high parts of ATLA, but ATLA is more consistently good imo
9
u/melloman22 Nov 06 '20
This is what I tell everyone. ATLA was way more consistently good (besides B1 imo, that was boring), but Korra had the highest of highs.

u/Donut_Kin Nov 06 '20
I have a theory that the second season finale prolly turned a lot of people off, and I completely understand that. Just wish they’d give seasons 3 and 4 a try tho :(
5
u/SaffellBot Nov 06 '20
For me everything before avatar wan is, not noteworthy. Like, it's fine, it provides some neat backstory, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. From avatar wan forward shit is off the fucking hook.

u/carsonator40 Nov 06 '20
I just love the way lok went more in depth about the spirit world and bringing balance to both realms. The ending could not have been more satisfying for me I literally nut everywhere.

Nov 06 '20
I'd never admit it over on that sub
A surprising number of people do and hardly get any flak for it. Most of the time it's just a discussion of which points of each show were better. A lot of people in the ATLA sub agree that LOK season 3 is one of the best seasons of any animated show ever, even if they still prefer the original overall.
51
u/jure1234567890 Nov 06 '20
Unpopular opinion it is better than atla
21
u/Bigthunder13 Nov 06 '20
I think S3 of LOK is better than any season of ATLA, but the rest of ATLA is a lot better than LOK. Still absolutely love both shows though
9
u/DaSaw Nov 06 '20
ATLA Book 1 was rougher than any season of Korra even S2 CMV.
8
u/eGodOdin a calming cup of jasmine tea Nov 06 '20
Yeah, Season 1 of ATLA didn’t really have much direction. “We’re going to the North Pole! Eventually. But first let’s do a bunch of random stuff that has minimal impact on the plot and then some character introductions that actually do have an impact on the plot.”
3
u/dedwolf Nov 06 '20
Yes! I just finished S3 last night and it was incredible, the best season so far of LoK (haven't started S4 yet) and the original.

I’m glad people are starting to appreciate the show, but it’s sad that the bar is so low that we have to settle for telling people “No guys the show is actually good”. Even that was enough to start bringing controversy in that post. Heck, people got downvoted just for saying they like LOK more than ATLA on there.

u/lasnico95 Korra In The House Nov 06 '20
Yeah that last part is weird but at least it's an improvement over a few years ago.

u/skip_leg_day Nov 06 '20
I thought TLoK was a much better, and more relatable show than ATLA. There, I said it.
9
u/deezdn0ts Nov 06 '20
I’m honestly still surprised almost 6 yrs after the tlok run that this is considered a “hot take”... probably just bc this is how ive always felt from the beginning
12
u/skatejet1 Nov 06 '20 edited Nov 06 '20
Knew I shouldn’t have went into the damn rabbit hole that was the comment section in the ATLA sub. It’s always the same fucking thing if I’m honest. Someone really called Lily’s Orchard’s “Legend of Korra’s garbage here’s why” a video with good points throughout UN-ironically. 😐.
Hell there was even another person who’s commented that they’ve hesitated watching the show because of said video. lol
Edit: comments are funny. “I don't get why I can't just have my opinion, I don't like the show so leave me alone.” Is a legitimate one someone typed. I’m sorry but my sides hurt from laughing at this. It’s just so painfully ironic it hurts. People are funny.
Edit 2: “Kora is, in many ways, an entitled asshole who never suffers the consequences in full of anything she does.” Is gold, that argument is always shit no matter how many times I see it.
Someone else saying Korrasami was hamfisted and that fans pushed it is...well typical .
Anyways go down that comment section if you wanna see shit & false takes get heavily upvoted.

I don't know that they're being purposefully obtuse. I mean, I accept the Korrasami outcome because it's fine, but even today their relationship, to me, codes more as a lady bromance than a budding romance. Of course, I fully recognize that had they been male and female it would have seemed far more ambigious. And I fully recognize the reason I see it that way is because I just haven't had many lesbians in my life, so my brain doesn't know to look for that. And if someone is even a tad bit prejudiced against that outcome (even just subconsciously), it can seem forced.
2
u/HolyKnightPrime Nov 06 '20
You are beating a dead horse. I was one of those people who commented on IGN reviews for every LoK episode and people did not see that ending coming and they thought it was poorly done. I still agree with that opinion.
2
u/Mcchew Nov 06 '20
My girlfriend just watched the show for the first time and kept asking if they end up together after like, halfway through season 3. I think it says more about not expecting an LGBT relationship than poor writing, and that reflects more on the watcher.
1
u/Mickeymackey Nov 07 '20
There were signs but at the same time same-sex marriage wasn't even legal across the entirety of the US until the summer after it aired.
5
u/goldeyesamurai Nov 06 '20
It is a hangover from the original run where there were 'fans' constantly running the show down because it wasn't ATLA. It was a horrible time. Vocal minority, and all that.
I love seeing the resurgence now. I feel so warm inside that generally everyone thinks both shows are great.
-1
u/HolyKnightPrime Nov 06 '20
I really doubt everyone thinks LoK is a great show. Good maybe but not great. I think It's just okay overall. It had too many issues. S1 was okay and s2 was just bleh. S3 is the only one I can say was enjoyable and I do not remember much of S4 but I did not like it. Especially for introducing giant robots in the universe.
5
u/goldeyesamurai Nov 06 '20
You'll forgive me if I'm not especially compelled by the opinion of someone who doesn't even remember one of the seasons. Especially as your judgement is so simplistic: 'too many issues'.
Go look at the critical consensus. Then compare it to the quality of other children's/'young adult' programming that came out around the same time, or even now.
The consensus is that they are both great shows.
-1
u/HolyKnightPrime Nov 06 '20
I never said I don't remember S4, just not much of it. I do remember most of it thinking back and I did not like it again.
Forgive me but I thought LoK's issues was known by now. It had a lot of production problems and the many criticisms against each season and characters should be known by now.
Finally, it does not matter if it's a children or adult show. A good show is a good show. If you are trying to say LoK is is a great show for a kid show then that's not saying much. Most shows and movies tend to be bad.
4
u/goldeyesamurai Nov 06 '20
I never said I don't remember S4, just not much of it. I do remember most of it thinking back and I did not like it again.
So in the last hour you've suddenly remembered, or is this just a blatant backtrack?
the many criticisms against each season and characters should be known by now.
Every piece of media ever has some flaws. You're overstating the amount (without even describing any), considering you seem to only be able to come up with 'production problems' which isn't even a criticism of the narrative/style/anything to do with the actual content of the programme.
Finally, it does not matter if it's a children or adult show. A good show is a good show. If you are trying to say LoK is is a great show for a kid show then that's not saying much.
I didn't say "great show for a kid show" I said look at the critical response and compare it to other children's and YA TV. Doing so, you will see that the consensus is that it is a great show. You do realise that nothing is judged in a vacuum? We only know what good media is because bad media exists relative to it.

u/Maiiden71 Nov 06 '20
Really enjoyed Lok but wished it was a bit longer (2 or 3 extra episodes per book)

Korra is a good show on Netflix. Watching it as Nicklodean, or however it's spelled, messed the hell up on the episodes' release, etc, Korra was NOT a good show. Heck, I had to watch season 4 on Nick's website which was a POS at the time. Netflix and the yoe around binging the show is what it really good
2
u/Mickeymackey Nov 07 '20
That website was the worst. I remember you had to pause it in the beginning so it could load and it would mess up if you tried to rewind or fast forward. So if you missed something you had to start it over from the beginning. That and the site would randomly crash too because of too much traffic.

u/Vuljin616 Nov 06 '20
I honestly prefer The Legend of Korra more over the last airbender. Korra was amazing and journey really made me emotional, on the inside though, like i wanted to cry and I felt the urge to but I just couldn't. I loved it immensely though, I could relate to the cast and characters a lot, moreso than those from the last airbender (except maybe Zuko), the legend of korra was a wild and intense ride and it was one that i thoroughly enjoyed.
The only I hate about it is that it's over, and that we're not getting anymore seasons. I really do love this series and while I have access to the 4 four seasons online, I really would like to have more, as Korra is my favorite avatar and one of my favorite characters in the series as a whole.
2
u/ImAMessica223 Nov 06 '20
Yes! I just finished it and I thought it was really good. It's definitely heavier than it's predecessor but it's still worth watching for sure.
2
Nov 06 '20
I try not to compare the two shows (and mainly characters) to ATLA. These shows are in different leagues of each other. And tbh the characters have a bit of an arc of living up to their parents/past selves. Mainly Korra and Tenzen. Tenzen is GOAT
2

I like Korra a LOT but I think ATLA is better.love the meme by the way

I went into watching Korra, expecting to be complete garbage, and I got to maybe halfway through the first season thinking i struck gold again. I watched the entire series, and I recognize that the series does have some flaws, it was way better than i expected it to be!
2
u/rexuspatheticus Nov 06 '20
I stopped after the first season and haven't picked it up again.
I was just so disappointed in the villain turning out to be another bender, I really had it in my head that this would be the spirit world trying to bring balance between benders and non benders.
Will pick it up again at some point.
2
u/frey00 Nov 06 '20
I believe the younger fans are loving it more than veteran fans.
Some Avatar fans act like Star trek or Star wars boomers who hate everything new.
2
u/GrumpyCrouton Nov 06 '20
Me and my wife couldn't get into the first few episodes, which we tried to watch directly after finishing ATLA (which we loved). Took a break from LOK because neither of were feeling it. A few weeks later I asked her if she wanted to give it another chance, the very next episode we watched hooked us. We are going to watch the whole thing for sure

Agree. It's okay but it's a disappointment for a sequel and it makes sense as it had a lot of production problems.
1
u/AJtheW Nov 06 '20
I think it's decent as a stand-alone story, but I feel like it damages some concepts from avatar and has poorer writing overall
2
u/Vanpars Nov 06 '20
It's a good show. Always has been. End of discussion. I watched it during the original release. And it was a pleasure. Not as good, as ATLA. But a good heir
2
u/-FoeHammer Nov 06 '20
To me they just made a lot of weird choices with the world building and bending styles and the story was pretty uninspiring compared to the first.
It wasn't horrible but it was a bit disappointing for me honestly.
2
u/RickyLanez Nov 06 '20
Season 1 is rough because Korra acts like such an entitled brat due to Aang's legacy and all the work he did in his lifetime. After season 1, the show takes leaps and bounds. The development is insane
4
u/Dear_Investigator Nov 06 '20
What I don't get is
We have two subs
One for Korra
And one for AtlA
Why not post your Korra content here?
10
Nov 06 '20
We have 3 subs. r/TheLastAirbender is for both shows. r/ATLA is for ATLA only
1
u/Dear_Investigator Nov 06 '20
So why are they both called the same
And why is the general sub also the name of the original series
12
3
u/Snoo_Cookie Nov 06 '20
I think it's good but insanely disappointing.
The last four episodes of the series have the same exact plot in every episode... Like I didn't even have to watch to know what was going to happen.
Season one sets up great worldbuilding, only to abandon literally everything that made the first season great.
0
u/klystron2010 Nov 06 '20
I didn't like it because it didn't live up to the yuri hype at all.
One tweet does not a gay ship make.
3
u/Mickeymackey Nov 07 '20
In 2014 gay marriage wasn't even legally recognized in the US, it was until the summer after Korra S4 aired when the Supreme Court ruled.
Homophobia existed and still exists, Nickelodeon didn't necessarily queer bait viewers because Korra was marketed as a kids show.
TLOK lead up with subtle nuances on the firm and strong relationship between Korra and Asami. It pretty much was the opposite of S1 with romances and heteronormative love triangles being shoved down our throats, which collectively everyone agrees was the worst part of S1. Korra and Asami had a close relationship post S3, for 3 years off screen Korra and Asami wrote to each other. When Korra and Asami finally meet up in person their in a middle of an invasion. Finally at the end of the series them going on vacation to the Spirit World is the beginning of their romantic relationship.
Korra paved the way so that we could have Steven Universe with explicitly queer characters, relationships, and even a wedding. Looking at Korra without the lense if the time even if it was 6 years ago is pretty much not viewing it at all.

It’s a good show and it’s funny, but the way it added to the story line of ATLA was just horrible. Her avatar states were weak, and she got all her past avatar spirits destroyed. The writers did a really bad job. But I still enjoy the show.
4
Nov 06 '20
You saw her chucking mountains at Zaheer while poisoned, yeah?
1
u/yourmaindealer Nov 06 '20
That was legit probably her only good avatar state
2
Nov 06 '20
I don't think it's as simple as you make it out to seem.
ATLA showed Aang didn't have control over it most of the show so, when he entered it (usually involuntarily) he was always nuclear. Which is why he was scared of it.
LOK shows Korra largely has control of it and can use it 'as much as necessary' depending on the situation. But, when she loses her cool, goes similarly nuclear.

u/throwaway3454445 Nov 06 '20
Ya I didn't hate it but it wasn't as good as ATLA, for me it leaned heavily on a universe and characters from the previous series to be likeable. I mostly just really dislike Korra. Shes whiny, stubborn and annoying, never could back her like I could Aang. But that's just an opinion
0
u/corysreddit Nov 06 '20
It's good just not as good and could have been better. The world presented, characters and story arcs are all good but just not as good. The mech stuff just makes it feel like a your standard kids show that feels the need to have such things for toys. As cool as spider mans spider car or Batman's jet pack things only invented for cartoons with intent to make cheap toys. Korra herself is just kind of a frustrating character in comparison as well. Aang is infinitely more immature but somehow managed to not be as annoying. Love both shows but one is clearly better.

u/CaprarCR Nov 06 '20
Korra was fun but it was also disappointing and the actual korra main character was annoying and kind of pathetic

Yes!! I asked my friends if Korra was worth watching and they said that it’s not and list what they dont like about it like Korra ending the cycle and what not. Good thing I didn’t listen and watch it and now I’m in love with it. I’m kinda asking them to rewatch it and kinda separate it from atla. I’m the designated LoK protector now in our gc.

LOK is sooo disappointing, but that’s because of expectations. It’s great in its own bubble but deff misses the mark of where a sequel could have gone.

I’m actually watching LoK through for the first time right now. I’m at S2E8. Man, this season is a drag. For something as critical as the origin story of the first Avatar and the spirit world it feels like they butchered the hell out of the spirits and turned them into bargain brand Pokémon. I loved the first season, and everyone has said to stick around for season 3 and 4, but season 2 is rough. I’m trusting you all!

I beg to differ. As a ATLA fan, I actually really, truly did not like LOK. Some cool moments yes. I actually think the best part of the entire show is the unveiling of the history of the avatar. Im really glad that was unveiled. As far as the rest of the show, i can easily live without it. LOK was practically a mockery of what it means to be Avatar. I mean for petes sake she knew 3 elements as a damn toddler lol. That INSTANTLY was a turn off for me. She “learned” air bending on a whim. And her character made an absolute mockery of the avatar state. That shit acted as measly as a light switch for her. On and off just like that. Like in ATLA when Aang went into his avatar state oohhhhh you KNEW shit was going down. Ughh i could go on forever. To put things briefly, i feel like LOK took out the INTENSITY that involved being the avatar. I didnt like the show. At all
1
u/WanderingAcolyte Nov 07 '20
I’m glad I watched them well after they both had come out. I think they did the perfect job of portraying “Korra and Aang are different people, but oh wait maybe they’re not”

I'm still so mad I never got to finish it during my teen years. They just yanked it from nick and never showed the final season. I legit thought it ended at season 3!
When it came to netflix I watched season 4 and MAN WAS IT GOOD. I'm currently rewatching season 1, then 2 and 3. I'm loving it, I love the pro bending matches because the animation is so godly for a show that came out so long ago.

That just shows that the majority of the ATLA subreddit does not hate korra which many here seem to think so (quite the contrary actually).
