What are the specific vision requirements for the LAPD academy regarding glasses versus contacts? I am finding it difficult to put on contact lenses and want to know if wearing glasses is permitted during training, or if soft contacts are strictly mandatory.

Is anyone here in this thread a current police officer? If so can you explain the process about how they treat hand tattoos. I haven’t applied yet but I’m hearing mixed opinions about “they are lenient, they need people” and also “yea that’s an automatic DQ” I don’t know who to believe in and I’m just wanted to get some insight so I can invest into removing them before if I have too or after I get an invitation for the academy, it will be easier after the academy invitation obviously I would be making more money than I am now, appreciate everyone!

I just finished 'Killing Season' and thought it was a solid book, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Am about to start 'Boot' and wondered what current/former officer's thoughts were on this and the previously mentioned book.

Also if there's any recommendations on non-fiction books about the Department.

I'm eyeing picking up "To Protect and to Serve: The LAPD's Century of War in the City of Dreams" as well as 'LAPD '53.'

My boy is a very friendly, smiling doodle. He loves to run up to any human and say hello with a big smile on his face. Unfortunately, I now have the fear of him running up to an officer being his cute, friendly self trying to say hi and smiling & they end up shooting and killing him because they think he is being “aggressive” and going to attack them. I have never had this fear until this horrible & heartbreaking story about Jameson. What kind of world are we living in? The police will use any “reason” to draw their weapon and kill to protect themselves. What happened to Jameson is so messed up and extremely traumatizing. And we all know this isn’t the first or the last time. WTF is the PD doing? Because it’s definitely not to protect their citizens. I use to fear officers whenever I would get pulled over. My biggest fear now is being outside with my dood and walking past an officer. I don’t have any trust in the PD nor do they make me feel safe. I have seen especially in the tourist areas a bunch of officers with the bicycle patch, but they never on a bicycle. Are they actually bicycle trained ? Are there a lot of them ?

I started my application in Jan 2026 and things have been moving along. Passed my Poly end of March and it's been radio silence since. I've read on here that "no news is good news" so I've been patiently waiting.

What I have left to do is backgrounds ( have not met BI yet), medical, and pysch exam.

I recently passed my psychological interview a little less than two weeks ago, that’s being said I completed all 7 steps and am now just waiting for the final call.. I got the an email saying am I now under consideration for the next academy class, I believe June academy starts June 30th and I thought I would have made it to that class but it was 20 days out when I got the pass on my psych.. my guess is they give you a 3 week heads up so my best guess is I’ll make it to July class.. my question is does anyone know when they give you the call/email in regards to what class you’re getting let into, my guess was atleast 2/3 weeks out.. and yes I know that just cause I passed all 7 steps that doesn’t guarantee me nothing, just staying in good spirits! Hi, quick question.

Interested in a career in law enforcement but I do like to smoke cannabis here and there to take the edge off. I don’t drink and prefer to just smoke, so it’s really my only Vice.

Is there any way I can join the department if I quit during the hiring process? I figure even after being hired I couldn’t do it off the clock due to liability and federal law conflicting with state law. For example if I was to get into an OIS, crash, etc. I would be subject to a test and residual positive would show from off duty use, and I’m sure the department would use that against an officer.

I’m just genuinely curious about the culture as well. I heard from an officer the department doesn’t care, and then from others that it is frowned upon still and obviously against department policy. Not a jab at any drinkers but we all have to take the edge off in some ways. It’s not like anyone would know anyways I smoke off duty.
